  1. Uh-oh. . . '99 986 with 125K, my daily driver, just replaced my AOS with help from this board now has a host of new rattles, one of them getting worse and sounds very clang-y and varies with RPM's. Something is bad, very bad. Started about 2 weeks ago as slight clank, like you might hear on an old 70's Caddy that hadn't seen a shop since '82. Varied with engine speed, seemed to occasionally go away when I was driving, but that may have been just that I couldn't hear it with the top down. Now very loud. An aural tour around the engine compartment shows the sound is loudest as indicated on the pic. However it also sounds very loud just poking head underneath. Might be closer to the bottom than the top. Can't tell because I didn't have time to get it up in the air and investigate. When I came from work it was so bad, I took it right to the shop. Engine_Compart_Bullseye.pdf Don't know if this board has sound capability, but here's a couple of MP3's about how it sounds. The first is holding recorder right over the spot where the bullseye is. Second is moving recorder from L rear of car to R rear, then to the bullseye. Boxster_rattle_over_manifold_.mp3 Boxster_rattle_from_L_to_R_to_over_manifold.mp3 Even though it's in the shop, shops don't always get it right, and I've never known this board to be wrong, even when making calls against the shop. So, what say you, Renntech? masterbm
  2. Thanks, all for the input. You're all exactly right, the puff of smoke at startup is normal, and I've seen that before, but what I've got now is really excessive. Looks exactly like Mike Focke's pics. While it only lasts for a few seconds, it's really quite a bit of smoke. I'll take some pics so all can see a before and after, though it may be a bit redundant since Mike's site tells the story so well. Thanks for the tips on the throttle body, shi. I'll give it a good going over as I work on the AOS. Your post is excellent, and convinced me that I can give this a try myself. B
  3. Well, My '99 2.5 with 120K is doing the ol' "big puff of white smoke at start-up" gag. Lasts 2-3 secs, worse if I leave the car on an incline (i.e. with the passenger side higher than the driver side.) Got a CEL. Car idles at about 800 rpm, has gentle shudder as it works its way up to just above 1000, then gives big rev and works its way back down. No obvious fluid on ground. Thanks to this board, I'm reasonably sure it's the AOS. Unless anyone else has a better idea. I hope not, cause my new one is coming from Sunset in 2 days. Wish me luck as I try to install it myself. Maybe I'll take some pics for future sufferers. But Spring has FINALLY arrived in Cincinnati, and I gots to gets this car healthy for fun! While I'm at it, anyone have any other tricks to brighten sluggish performance from an old Box, aside from clean/replace MAF? 'Fraid the ol' grey goose aint what she used to be. Neither am I!!! masterbm
  4. My '99 986 is at around 113K. Bought it with 50K, it's my daily driver. Unfortunately my luck has not been so good, though I still love the car and think it's totally worth it. In addition to normal maintainence (sp?) like pads a few times, front and rear rotors, oil changes, normal filter changes, rear tires x 2, front tires x 1, I replaced: 1. Emergency brake sensor-cheap 2. Convertible top push rod-cheap 3. New roof-not cheap, but I was victim of burglary. Jerks. 4. Coolant reservoir-not cheap 5. Key battery-cheap 6. Plugs and coils-mostly cheap 7. Some kind of oil seal-not cheap 8. Lights in instrument cluster-cheap All in all, Boxster experience totally worth it. I'd say the experience, just like marriage, has been not cheap, but certainly enriching. Since repairs were expensive I learned to do many things myself, and that has been great. Really helps you appreciate automotives and get into the excitement of the Porsche community when you're exploring your own car, fixing your own stuff. Great in beautiful weather, adequate in rain, crummy in snow, expensive to fix, but worth it! B
  5. All, Just a quick heads-up and endorsement. . . Had the classic problem: Left town for a couple weeks, '99 Boxster c 120K miles exposed to a cold Midwestern chill in my absence. When I came back, car started up immediately, ran fine for 5 mins. Then I lost a cylinder: clunky vibration when accelerating, lost some power, smelled gas, engine sound with a deep cough. Check engine light came on resulting in OBD code 0306 among others, though the codes seemed to fluctuate at times. 0306 came up the most consistently. Leaving the car alone for a few days resulted in a repeat of the phenomenon: normal engine function for a few minutes, followed by all symptoms of cylinder loss. . . THANKS TO THIS BOARD I wasn't so worried. Other people with the exact same story as mine had discovered that the problem was most likely associated with busted plugs/coils. NOT an 02 sensor. NOT a damaged cylinder. Despite what some of the codes might say. Took the car in to the shop. Mechanic said he wanted to replace 02 sensor. Thanks to this board, I told him not to, and to just replace the plugs, etc. PROBLEM SOLVED, CEL is off, car's doing great, and I saved myself hundreds of dollars. Thanks to all who contribute. I'll be making an extra donation after I finish this post.
  6. Gang, Here's some nice pics of some cosmetic. . .uh. . .highlights I put on my '99 Boxster 2.5. Hope I'm uploading these right. Put the scratch on after 1 week of ownership. Almost committed suicide. Put the hole in about a year ago. Curse you, trailer hitch! Question is this: Can a body shop repair these things, or should I just replace the cover and the butterflies beneath? If I need to replace, can I just order them, remove the old stuff, and put the new stuff on with standard tools? Is there some kind of "finishing work" that shops do to get stuff the right color and finish that I won't be able to do at home? Thanks as always, masterbm
  7. Had the exact same problem with my '99. After reading many threads on this board disconneting/reconnecting battery without success, and getting all geared up to take off the door panel, examine switches, etc., we fixed it in 30 secs: 1. open door, holding exterior handle in up position so window doesn't go back up. 2. close door, holding exterior handle up. 3. really make sure you closed the door, have your dad throw his weight on it. If dad unvailabe, use own weight. Now everythign works. I don't get it, but I like the results! Maybe it'll just start doing it again in a couple days, but it's working good now!
  8. After a quick search on this board and Google I came up empty-handed on whether or not I can get a deeper cigarette lighter unit for a '99 Boxster. . .what say you guys? ipod and cell phone charger don't fit well into the original. Plus I busted it by banging a guitar amp into it, and now it doesn't work at all. I figure I might as well get a deeper one, while I'm replacing. I also figure that the Boxster is not a fantastic band-bus. In other news, I quickly and easily replaced rear brakes, sensors, and rotors today, thanks to this board. I may try a coolant reservoir replacement. Got the reservoir, now all I need is the tools, a weekend, and some guts. . .but none of this would have been possible without this board, so thanks, everyone! masterbm
  9. Part #2 of "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing". . . Changed air filter on '99 Boxster this AM with greatest of ease, and while cleaning out engine compartment with vacuum, must have knocked throttle cable off the little shield or guide or whatever that thing is called on the throttle body; when I got back in and stepped on throttle, it was hard to push down, grated as it went. My sharp-eyed father noticed that the cable didn't look right, we pushed it back on to where we figured it should be, problem solved. Except that the throttle cable seems fairly loose as it passes over that guide. How much tension is appropriate, and if I stretched it by pushing on pedal while it was off the guide, how can I re-adjust tension? Thanks for your time, masterbm
  10. Part #1 of "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing". . . Have a '99 986 and had the standard "the backlighting on my odometer went out" problem, removed the instrument cluster with the greatest of ease to examine the bulbs (thanks to this forum), and found that maybe the odometer bulb was missing? Can't tell. There were a couple spaces that look like bulbs would go in there, but no bulbs in there. There were a couple for the smaller, black-backed bulbs (the 1.2 watt ones?). Did the switcheroo with some bulbs that I knew were working, but to no avail. Replaced the switched bulbs to their rightful homes, I thought. You probably know where this is going. . . Replaced cluster, now have no digital lights speedometer, odometer, nothing, though the big gauge lights seem to be working. Numbers refelct OK in sunlight, can see that it's working, just not lit. Any ideas? Anybody got a nice diagram that shows which lights do what, so I could test. Part #s on bulbs so I can get some? Thanks as always! masterbm
  11. Friends, Was gonna change oil/filter on my 986 but realized my jack and jack stands were either too tall or too short or in cruddy shape. Any recommendations from anyone on a jack or some ramps or pros/cons of each for Boxsters? Preciate it. masterbm
  12. Gonna change my oil and filter, but Alldata's part # for oil filter is 996-107-225-60, while the part number listed for such a part at the parts place I've been going to is 996-107-225-52. Who is right, and will the -52 part still work? Thanks as always, masterbm
  13. Funny, I hear something just like this around the same engine speed in my '03 986 S. Sounds like it's coming from the passenger air intake. It only happens when I have the throttle in a very specific position, so I assume it's just vacuum and nothing to worry about. It also only seems to happen at higher altitudes. I have a '99 986 with 83K miles. Just started hearing that same noise about 2-3 weeks ago. Quiet until I hit 5th gear, and then at most speeds but particularly over 25, getting ? louder as speed increases. High whine when I'm on the gas, stops when I'm off the gas. Disturbing because it just started happening. Did you guys ever find out what it was? Thanks in advance!
  14. Thanks to this board for providing the basics on the pushrod fix for my '99 Boxster top. Worked beautifully, fixed in 1 h for the cost of a small part. Where did all the "top fix" posts go? Got a new problem that I'd love to post, complete with pics, but I'm wondering before I do if someone could direct me to a manual that will describe top (and all the rest of the car?!?) anatomy/physiology so I can speak intelligently about the issue, using a common vocabulary. Thanks so much to all who continue to educate. masterbm
  15. Noticed my '99 US Boxster 2.5 w/ about 80K having what seems to be a more difficult time getting signal that clutch pedal is down in order to allow ignition. I gotta jam on the thing to get the car to start. Worse in warm weather. Any thoughts? This is a terrific forum, by the way.
  16. The mystery deepens. . .as I was investigating this problem a few weeks ago with a buddy's OBD reader, there was an MAF-related code, as well as a throttle sensor code that appeared. Those have since disappeared. Hmm. . . Thank you all for your time and expertise. At least I now know that this problem is very out of my league, and to ask my mechanic if he has PST2/PIWIS capability. I'll keep you all updated!
  17. Hmm. . .any tips on how to go about diagnosing the P0130? Is it worth it for a newbie to get a manual or equivalent product and try to proceed, or am I liable to do permanent damage? What I mean is, with some car experience, can joe average jack the car up in the garage, get to things like the 02 sensor, wiring harness, etc without specialized tools, little experience with Porsche, etc?
  18. Hey Friends, I am Cincinnati's poorest, dumbest Porsche owner, and bad experiences with local mechanics have given me a vested interest in DIY Porsche repair. Now I need a little guidance. I have a 1999 2.5 Boxster (986) with just over 60,000 miles on it. Over the winter my CEL came on, and weeks to months ago, I had the thing back in the shop to find out why, and get it fixed. $300 later, the mechanic had replaced the fuel filter, cleaned out the injectors, and the CEL stayed off for about a week and a half. Meanwhile, my engine has begun to pulse as I idle between about 800 and 1000 rpms. Sometimes worse than others. This ticked me off, so I got a cheap OBD decoder, which had this to say, followed by what the code menu on this site has to say: P0130 - Oxygen Sensor Ahead of Catalytic Converter (Cylinders 1 - 3) - Intercore Short Circuit or Limited P1124 - Oxygen Sensing Adaptation Area 1 (Cylinders 1 - 3) - Rich Threshold P1126 - Oxygen Sensing Adaptation Area 1 (Cylinders 4 - 6) - Rich Threshold I have seen other similar discussions somewhere on this site, but haven't been able to find them again. My question is this: Anybody had similar experience, and found solution? I have very little experience with these cars, so if this can be a DIY project, where can I go to get a play-by-play on how to fix this? Thanks in advance, Brian
