Just a quick question here...when closing the hood, one should drop it from about a foot or so. Is it normal that you then need to push on the hood to get it to completely close? Thats what the previous owner told me to do. Seems odd. Just wondering if this is the cause of my fault that I can't seem to find.

This is exactly what I am thinking of doing! I've got a 2000 Millenium with the stock nav system which I believe is a double DIN to start with and its terrible. I'm looking to do something like what you've done but the trim plate is really the missing piece. I don't see any for sale at Eurospeedmotors but will inquire.

A question: where did you put the nav antenna?

How does one get from the VIN to the spec sheet? I looked around on the site and found the Option Code Decoder, and the VIN Decoder but how do i get the list of options from the VIN. I have a 2000 Millenium Edition so I'd like to get a full list of what's different.

I'm looking for some replacement brighter and whiter bulbs for the interior lights in the headliner. The ones with the little rocker switches that control them. On my BMW, upgrades are available from Bavarian Autosport which is a great aftermarket source for all things BMW. Anyone know of something similar for 911's?

While this discussion is about finding a replacement speaker, does anyone have a decent recommendation for a aftermarket speaker that will fit using the OEM grills. It seems like we are all in agreement that even a new OEM doesn't sound very good.

There are many threads about replacing the front/rear speakers but they're not clear on whether they replaced the grill as well.

I'm looking to do an upgrade of both the front and rears but would really want to keep the factory grills.

Just came back from a 1500 mile trip into Canada and was wondering if anyone knows how to convert the digital speedo readout into km/h? It was always a little frustrating not knowing the exact speed I was driving in km/h.

Just took a look a the DIY menu and the AOS it seems is not in this location. Its at the "front" of the engine on the left/drivers side. My leak is directly under the AC compressor pulley.

If it is the AOS, should I be concerned. I'm planning on doing a 500 mile trip this weekend.

Absolutely right....OK...here are a couple of pictures. Hope they help. Oh, and its not the motor mount, they look fine and dry.

Again, its a part of the actual engine, that is its cast aluminum.

Hi everyone:

Just finished changing the oil in my 2000 996 with 49,000 miles. Followed the advice and the DIY here and it was really a piece of cake...aside from a moment of terror when I thought that my "turkey pan" that I used to catch all the oil wasn't big enough. It was **just** big enough! Bought the new 0W40 off Amazon @ <$8/quart.

My question is while I was under the car, I noticed a "part" on the rear of the engine (passenger side sort of close to the right motor mount) that is covered in oil. Its certainly not dripping onto the floor but it quite dirty with oil and road grime. From this very poor description, can anyone tell me what this part is or what could be leaking in this area. Its not the motor mount and the part is near/at the bottom of the engine. A pump of some kind? It's sort of at the same level as one of the O2 sensors.

When locking the doors (setting the alarm), the parking lights flash and I get one beep. Hood light/latch work fine. Any ideas what the one beep might signify?

Thanks for the quick reply. One further question, if you're running the back wheels up 2 inches onto some wood are you actually draining all the oil out, given the angle of the car. I am (overly?) concerned with this since I'm really interested in finding any and all the little bits of RMS in my oil.

So should the car be level to get all the oil out?

I'm also planning to do oil changes myself and am about to embark on my first one. Is it necessary to lift the car off the ground or can one successfully access the drain plug and filter with the normal ground clearance. I've got a 2000 996 Carrera 4 (stock). Also, anyone know the best place to buy Mobil 1 0W40? Online?

Good question. I am assuming that replacing the head unit with a double-DIN should be relatively straightforward, that is it would be evident how the power is connected, antenna, NAV transponder, etc. I would imagine that the connectors to the actual unit would be different.

Anyone out there know of some potential pitfalls?

I live just outside of DC (Bethesda area). Thanks for the tip on the 3200...didn't catch that. The 920BT is a little steep but could be an option. The current NAV/Cassette/CDC-3 player is as I said terrible or lets just say substandard in my opinion. I'm looking to straighten things out for the least cost. And I'd welcome a little cubby shelf in place of the NAV disc reader.

Dharn55, I have a Millenium edition with the "upgraded" sound system (which includes NAV). I believe the head unit is what is referred to as double DIN. Can you confirm that the door speakers are actually subs? I would have thought that the rear speakers are subs and that the door and the dash speakers are just regular ones.

I'm also in the Maryland/DC area and am thinking of doing a similar mod to my 2000 996 C4. I've posted before that I think that the sound in these cars is terrible. The previous owner installed a Kenwood amp in my car up front in the trunk and a Kicker 8" sub and another Fosgate amp in a professionally made enclosure which I've removed since I prefer having more storage space.

I'm thinking of first swaping out the speakers in the front, doors and rear and then maybe changing the head unit.

Who do you recommend using in the Maryland area? I'd like to do the speaker work myself but i think i need a professional installer to figure out how this amp is wiring in since I the stock amp is still in car as well and am not sure how its all connected.

I'm not looking for a superior sound system but really just decent sound and maybe a better head unit that offers nav and a decent CD/MP3 player. Nothing fancy at all. The Pioneer AVHP3200 is what I'm looking at now. It's selling on Amazon for <$400. Thoughts?

I was wondering about how to get to the adjustment at the handbrake itself, the first of the adjustment points, but thanks for the info on how to adjust it at the rear wheels. Very clear.

I've got quite a bit of slack and I think that adjusting the turnbuckle would be the first place to start.

I too need a small adjustment to the p-brake. My question is: In the link that Loren sent, its not clear where the turnbuckle resides. My guess is that its under the brake lever itself (the first picture) but I don't see instructions to get to it.

Any ideas?

I am itchin' to replace the pedals of my 2000 C4 996 6 spd with some nice looking aluminum ones. Not sure why. I've just always thought it would be a nice touch. A quick check of the internet gives me all sorts of styles and price points. So naturally I am posting here to see what others have done. I want to change the 4 pieces and am wondering how difficult the job is and what the best pedal set is. I see some at SunCoast which are nice.

Any recommendations out there?
