  1. hi Guys do you know of any tutorials on replacing your own RMS and IMS seals DIY. I'm pondering on doing my own.... Many thanks
  2. Hi and thanks for your replies.... The car runs very well smooth on idle and doesn't smell rich when running. Plenty of power. The engine light is working whislt the ignition is on. I do have some OBD software on my laptop. I was going compare the oxygen sensor data to see if they were similar. I was thinking of taking it to a garage to get the CO/HC checked has anyone got the spec for the emissions many thanks
  3. Hi guys i have just replaced my tail pipes for some new shiny ones, after driving about 50miles i have noticed that one side has been carbon coated and the other hasn't. Its a dry black dusty coating not wet or oily. The car doesn't smoke at all and feel this could be a problem with one side running richer/leaner than the other. If i was to use a gas analyser does anyone know what sort of CO and HC readings i should expect from a 98 996 3.4. Also is it the Lamda/Oxygen sensor that regulates the fueling. If one of these was faulty should the Engine managment light be on. Is a 1998 996 OBD 2 if so where wouldi find the diagnostic port.. many thanks I will keep you posted.
  4. I have torn a 3.4L all the way down to the crankshaft. Did the whole project over Thanksgiving weekend. The engine was a long block and on an engine stand -- so I did not have to deal with extracting it out of the vehicle. it is relatively easy to tear down. Assembly is not hard either -- but timing it is the tricky part. what is wrong with your head(s)? mike Ok I just read through some of your other posts.... You're trying to replace the variocam solenoid. You do not need to pull the heads for that. You will need to pull the valve cover. You might not even have to pull the cams to replace the tensioner solenoid. -- but I suspect you will. The difference between this and pulling the heads is that you do not need to take out the lifters, lifter tray, and remove the headbolts, and replace the head gasket. you will need to retime things if you have to pull the cams. which means some special tools. you will probably should have a cam position holder tool even if the job can be done with cams in-- this hooks into the end of the cams and bolts into the heads temporarily, and locks the cams in position. I'd say it can be done as a DIY -- not sure how easy it can be done inside the car -- might be possible. much easier if you drop the engine and put it on a stand. mike Hi mike thanks for the info.. The reason for the head removal was that my exhaust bolts had all snapped when i had to remove the Exhaust Manifold proir to me changing the Solenoid valve. The Solenoid valve was on the 4-6 bank and not a problem , just the fact that i had to remove the Manifold equated in me having to snap the bolts ... Porsche why oh why didn't you use stainless steel bolts!!!! on the manifold
  5. Hi there i haven't tried them yet but i bought them, they are for a GT3 Mk1 and the Porsche spaecialist says they will 100% fit he is actually fitting them for me in a couple of weeks so i'll keeo you posted.. I must say they look very similar but the ports look bigger and better welded more smoother. The point where they all branch into one is alot bigger too, thanks for you interest..
  6. Hi guys will 996 turbo shock fit a standard 996 1998.. Is there any differencecs thanks guys...
  7. Oh interesting. A local Porsche specialist in my area has offered me a pair of GT3 manifolds for my 996 .. My be they are not GT3 and he is trying to dress it up a bit.. Anyway if they seem like free flowing manifolds would i see much differnce in performance being that i still have the standard exhausts after that..thanks
  8. Hi there I have the opotunity of fitting some GT3 manifolds to my 996 it's the 3.4 standard other than a modified air filter. Do you guys think it's worth doing, would I see any gains ... Many thanks
  9. hi guys has anyone removed a head from a 996 3.4 .. is there a tutorial available any advice would be appreciated thanks
  10. Hi Maurice thanks for the info but the link didn't work....
  11. Guys any advice please... Need to replace the Timing sloeniod on cylinders 4-6.. Can't get the cam cover off due to lack of clearence around the exhaust. Can't get the exhaust of as the bolts are completely fused/Rusted into the manifold. So now what was a 3-4 hour job is looking like i'm going to have to grind off the exhaust bolts and the remove the head to get the bolts drilled out... I really can't belive Porsche put Exhaust bolts right under the car uncovered.. Any advice please please.... Does anyone have a tutorial on head removal....
  12. Hi guys its looking like i need to remove the Cam cover right hand side of my c2 1998.. Is there any advice i could get from anyone.. Will i need to drain the oil or will there just be whats lerking in the cover/casing. Can any one advise on holding down the cam shafts. Will they just fall out? I need to replace the Cam Actuator, so will i even need to hold the camshafts in. Where can i get the tool from or can i make one.. Can i still get access to all the bolts with the exhaust on....Thanks
  13. Guys looking around this briliant site i think i know what it is.. Could it be the Vario cam actuator.. could someone confirm with me. What are they like to change.. Can i just change the electrical part or do i have to change the lot... Many thanks Wow many thanks for the info... as you can see from the thread i'd come to the same conclusion as you.. It must of just crumble off when i cange the plugs the because the car has been running beutiful. i won't switch on the ignition the as i dont want the dreaded light up...what are they like to change do i have to take off the cam case..thanks again
  14. Could some one help please... I have just changed the plugs on my 1998 996 which to be honest wasn't as bad as i thought it would be took about 2-3 hours... As i finished the plugs on the right hand side (view from Rear) i noticed something hanging down looking like a sensor.. After much searching about i found that it fitted in what looks like the camshft housing, right next to where it says Vario Camshft. Its round and white and has a cable attached that goes up to a coupling at the rear. Its body would be held in with two bolts on a rounded fitting... I would imagine that due to it being right above the Exhaust just where all three pipes join (maximum Heat) this is why its become brittle and cracked and fallen out.. There is another one on the oppsite side in the same place.. so my question is, is this a cam sensor, does any one have a picture of one removed, do you think it would have been like this for sometime (no engine fault lights)... And are they a common problem on the 996 and approx cost... Many thanks to any one who can help
  15. hi thanks for the reply.. So sorry to be come over a bit slow, but are we saying that leave the filler hole open and let it drain up untill 45.c is reached then close it up ...many thanks
