  1. If is loosing steering fluid, then will it be hard to steer the car? so far I have no problem with steering.
  2. I am no tech so I am not sure what is "pentosin". Is it engine oil or coolant? I also notice that the coolant level has dropped a bit as well (from Max to Min). Could this be dripping or normal consumption? The car has been driven for about 1000 miles after service approx. 5 months ago.
  3. I was told that turbo is not immune from RMS. Plus I saw some dark greenish stuff on the floor this morning (at the rear end right underneath the engine in between the exhausts). I am worried that it may be RMS. However, I have the tappets changed a month ago and I don't know whether this is related to the dripping. Any view?
  4. Dear Loren, If a 996 has RMS problem, then where exactly will the engine oil be dripping from? Right underneath and in the middle of the engine (in between the exhausts) or a little bit further up in between the rear wheels? Thanks in advance.
  5. How often does one need to top up the coolant/antifreeze of a 996tt? Every 1000 or 2000 miles? Thanks in advance.
  6. Service took place about 5 months ago and coolant is slightly over min level. Oil consumption is on the high side (I think). Car is about 9000 miles (oil consumption about 850m/quart). If the car is driven at around 2-3k rpm, no smoke whatsoever. But driving it at around 4k rpm for 3-5 mins, then sometimes a patch of white smoke will appear after stopping at a stop sign and hit the gas. Is this normal?
  7. Loren, sorry mate. It is a 996TT but I hope you can give me some hints as to whether I should be worry. Car is a 2002 tipronic. Could it be just too much fuel?
  8. I have been driving the car at around 4k rpm lately. Sometimes when stop at the stop sign and then hit the gas, there will be a cloud of white (slightly greyish) smoke come out from the exhaust. Something wrong with the engine?
  9. 1999Porsche911, thanks for your quick response. Actually I wait until the parts have arrived before taking the car to the dealer. I reckon that they did not work on the car immediately when I took it in. They haven't said what causes the problem. All I know is that the chief mechanic will take a look at it. I am afraid that the tappets were changed by a junior mechanic and he may have forgotten to following the proper instructions in replacing the tappets (e.g. to pre-load the tappets first, etc.) Do you think the compression loss can be a serious problem?
  10. Guys, I have been encountering some small backfiring issue with my 996tt (2002 tip) and the chief mechanic of the authorised dealer said it was the sticky hydraulic tappets which caused the backfiring. Accordingly, I have taken my car to them to have the tappets changed. My car has been with them for almost 2 weeks and yesterday I was told that my car is now encountering some engine compression loss (probably something is leaking after the change of the tappets). I mean how could this happen? Is this poor workmanship or what? Actually I would like to ask (i) is it reasonable to take 2 weeks to change the tappets? (ii) what can cause the engine compression leak in this situation? Thanks in advance.
  11. Dear qeza, I understand that if a tappet is stuck, then the valve may be slightly opened because of the shortened length. However, I am not sure why a misfire or backfire will occur when the piston crown hit the valve which force it back on the valve seat. Could you please explain a little bit more? Thanks in advance.
  12. Another stupid question, hope you won't mind. Why would a sticky hydraulic tappet or tappets will cause a misfire or backfire upon acceleration? Thanks in advance.
  13. The reason I ask this question is because the engine doesn't make any tapping noise but the dealer believes that the hydraulic tappets are not working properly.
  14. Is it a must that a ticking noise will sound if the tappets are not working right?
  15. Dear Loren, Will sticking hydraulic tappets cause the car to misfire or backfire when accelerate? Aren't those hydraulic tappets suppose to be maintanence free? Do you know how they can worn out or get stuck? Thanks. :notworthy:
  16. Will leaky fuel injectors cause the car difficult to start when engine is hot and backfire when accelerate? Thanks in advance.
  17. Has anyone experienced popping (usually just one pop) when quickly accelerate from a cruising speed at around 30-40mph? Does anyone knows what could be the cause of this pop?
  18. The computer wil usuallyl shift down one gear or two for you 90% of the time when you step on the gas. However, it seems that there is still 10% of the time where the gear will, for example, stay with 4th when you press the gas and the car accelerates slowly. Will this be similar to a lugging situation?
  19. Can one cause an engine to lug with a tiptronic (e.g. cruising at a low rpm with a high gear)?
  20. Mech said there is a slight backfire upon acceleration. However, he has not yet able to locate the cause of this backfire. Any views?
  21. To give a better description of the problem. The sound is more like a metallic "thunk" from the rear around the engine area (it seems to come from underneath the engine, maybe from the exhaust). It doesn't happen all the time. Sometimes it happens when the car accelerate (not WOT) at a cruising speed of around 30 to 40 mph (at 3rd gear and sometimes 4th gear, probably around 2000 rpm). The thunk sound does not seem to be from the transmission coz it is from the rear end of the car. Mech thinks that it could be a backfire but couldn't find the cause of the problem. I am not sure if this "thunk" sound is actually describe by other people as "ping" in the engine (spark shock). Since I have been using high level octane gas so the sound shouldn't be the sound of a detonation (plus it doesn't happen all the time). Any comments or views?
  22. I've taken it to the shop and the mechanic said the engine/tranny mounts are tight. The subframe is ok. The sway bar and U/CV joints are all ok. The "thump" doesn't happen all the time. Sometimes it happens when I accelerate quickly while cruising at a low speed.
  23. Car is a Tip 996tt. I've been encountering a clunk at the rear sometimes when I accelerate from a low speed (around 30 mph at 3rd gear). Mechanic was unable to fix the problem. Any idea? :help:
  24. But will it cause damage to the engine or the exhaust system?
