  1. I think you have a leaking engine, sounds like coolant getting in the cylinders.
  2. My 99 3.4L tip just blew up. It was ok when it seemed to lose power and get rough, then out the rear view mirror, a puff of black smoke and then the sky filled with white smoke, a huge amount of it. I pulled over to the side of the road and it shut down after every light on the dash came on. The smoke cleared once it stopped but white smoke came out of the right exhaust for a while. The engine oil looks to have coolant in it. The engine looks fine visually. I didn't try to restart it. Towed it home. I'm bringing it to the dealer later this week when I get time. Chances are that it's a dropped sleeve. Anyone got ideas for what to do besides give Porsche 12-14k for a replacement engine? Will any e-gas 3.4L engine work or is tip a special one? Would a 3.6L cost much more?
  3. Other theories are one of the bolts between the fly wheel and torque convertor came lose and eventually jammed it. That it 'seized when it was restarted' probably didn't mean it's the engine. Anyway, the dealer has it and is dropping the engine as we speak.
  4. Not such a bad day given it has a warranty, just bring it to the dealer.
  5. Any easy way to check for this? The car is a tiptronic.
  6. I had my dealer replace a failed tiptronic on my 99 996 two weeks ago. Yesterday, luckily a couple of miles from my home, I accelerated on the highway and then got a really bad noise from the engine that was tied to RPM speed. I limped home and the noise seems to be in the center of the engine down low. I was able to restart the car maybe 5/6 times but then it wouldn't start anymore. The starter motor ties to turn but it just makes a jek sound and thats it. There are no CEL codes at all despite driving a couple of miles with the noise and the couple of starts. Any theories on what it is. It's going back to the dealer next week.
  7. I got it through my Porsche dealer when I bought the car. I don't know how to contact em directly.
  8. It's 9.7k USD to fix it if it's busted. I just did mine, front bearing failure.
  9. Repairmaster. I paid 2.5k for 6 yr/72k miles on my 99 C4 in 2003 with 17k on the clock. Worth every penny.
  10. I'm thinking of doing the same thing on my 99 996 C4. Please post what you did. My Porsche dealer said they would do it for 1200 including an alignment which seemed a good price compared with other quotes and it includes the 2 yr warranty.
  11. I have a similar problem on my 99 996 tip. My problem is that at 6k+ RPMs at steady throttle then I get a CEL. The dealer ended up replacing the lifters and carriers and DME but the problem still occurs. Two weeks ago my tip failed, they said a bearing on the front pump seized and then a seal blew. Fluid dripping all over the place. So, 10k for a new tip and I mentioned the misfires again. The mechanic think it may have been the tranny doing now. The dealer and PCNA went over the engine last year but all they came up with was lifters and DME to no avail. The last suggestion before the tranny issue was an unbalanced drive shaft.
  12. I had a baby seat on the right which has a C shaped bracket which bolts between the front of the seat and the floor. I used hose clamps to attach the extinguisher bracket to the C bar.
  13. OBD II plug under the dash board? Loren, Something funny happened with my race car and I don't know what it is... The RPM should have been a white wire and the throttle position a yellow and black. I could never find the yellow and black but I did find the white and guess what... NOTHING was logging. I finally got the RPM signal from the violet/green wire in the OBD II plug, conveniently located in the middle of the rear section. Thanks for everything! JM
  14. I'm using the stock tire sizes on 18 inch rims so 225/40 and 265/35R18 what is stock size in the rear? 265/35R18... i don't believe ps2s don't come in 285/30R18... thanks
  15. I actually have PS2's but in stock sizes on 18s on my C4 and am happy with them. Quieter than the pirellis the car was previously shod with.
  16. The people who race in PCA locally say the extra weight makes it pointless. The car has plenty of grip with the stock sizes on the street. If you're tracking the car then I'd use stickier rubber rather than larger tires. But, that said, unless you've a fair bit of track time, the stock car is still a lot of car on a track. I have 6 track days now and for me at least, the car is still not the problem to achieving faster laps :) Billy http://www.trackpedia.com
  17. I bought a G2Extreme logger and it has a tach input. It wants a square wave 5V signal for RPMs. I understand this may be available from OBD, is there a pin on OBD with this or where can I get the RPM signal on the car. Thanks
  18. Anyone done this? I see carnewal selling a kit for 2500euros and Schartz Motorsport at 2900USD. Anyone put this on a 99? Any gotchas or was it straightforward?
  19. I'm told dealers can flash my 99 996 NA tiptronic DME with a turbo tiptronic instead and then tell it that there is no turbo. They say it then shifts a lot better, cost is 750 bucks, any one know about this? Billy http://www.trackpedia.com
  20. I just got a GPS logger and it needs a 12V supply. Anyone know where I can easily get a 12V fused/switched point within the front baggage area?
  21. The tiptronic cars were less prone to this than the manuals (touch wood).
  22. I have not driven both, but I will say I have changed my PSS9 settings several times...It is very easy (less than 5 minutes). What kind of changes did u do and why did u do them? Thanks
  23. Anyone driven cars with both? I'm wondering if adjustability is all it's cracked up to be. I reckon if I had PSS9, I'd adjust em once and then forget about them. So, it'd come down to is PSS9 in this mode better/worse than ROW030 with a setup for daily drive with maybe 10 days of DE type driving annually?
  24. Yep But, what I don't see in that diagram is the bracket for the seat belt. Is it part of the seat then? Do you know if the seat mounts for the GT3 seats are available seperately and if so, can the normal sparco mount brackets be attached to it or have they fabed everything together.
