I put a double-din Pioneer unit in my 04 996. I am not sure what differences there are between the two cars, but I am very happy with the install. In the 996, the opening is a bit taller than standard double din, so some custom fabrication is required.
Someone with more knowledge of the similarities/differences in the dashes between the 987/996 could shed more light here..

I have seen it in the front trunk area next to the pollen filter, so you would never know it is there.
now that is neat, thanks for posting that Tool Pants
I wonder if I'd need a better antenna than what my tuner came with, I notice that one is a Terk which I think are usually sold as "better" antennas
I had tried putting the antenna next to the pollen filter (an a 04 C4S) and got good, but not great results. I then pulled the front bumper cover and mounted the antenna to the front bumper. This seems to work well. It is invisible, and gets good reception. I think that next to the pollen filter has the issue of being in the shadow of the window frame (and roof in my car). This may be less of an issue in a boxster.

It would appear from your picture that the connection nipple on that sleeve is already in use. In the kit that comes with the PSE, there is a sleeve with a nipple that is designed to replace an existing sleeve with no nipple. On my car, the sleeve on the right had no nipple and I was able to replace it with the sleeve in the kit. If the sleeve on the left side does not have a nipple, I believe it can be replaced with the one from the kit (someone correct me if I am wrong).can someone explain to me how the vacuum for the PSE works ?I ám into do the full installation of the PSE and not sure how it works and how to do.
I have checked on my car and I have a connection nipple on my right rubber sleeve next to the throttle body, can I use this one ?
If I remember the instructions correctly, if both sleeves already have nipples in use, the next step is to drop the engine enough to get access to one of the more forward sleeves.

Thanks for the advice, Beretta.
I have the unit installed and working. The install is complete except for the completion of the fabrication of the bezel. I am using the bezel that came with the unit, so this leaves only a small gap ~1/2" at the bottom that requires filling. I will look into your technique. I may also let the shop that I bought the gear from fabricate it for me.
I like your idea of using CD cases to support the unit. I used flexible metal strap to "suspend" the unit from the top of the support. The unit seems to be rock solid, and like your solution, there is minimal cost.
I like the NAV capabilities of the AVIC D1. The touch screen is very good. I also installed the Sirius and Ipod interfaces. While they both work well, the interfaces are poor at best. From what I can tell from the manual, the XM interface is much better.
All in all, a huge improvement over the stock equipment. Since this car is my daily driver, I really appreciate the integration of all of the A/V and NAV capabilities.

Harmon or BOSE sound package?
It is not the BOSE, so I guess the Harmon.
Thanks.

I am going to replace the amp in my 04 C4S as part of a complete stereo overhaul. I was hoping to create a wiring harness from the new amplifier that will terminate with a socket that the current speaker wiring harness can plug directly into. Does anyone have a diagram explaining the pinouts (or color codes) of the harness that leads to the speakers? Also, does anyone know what type of connector is required (i.e. I want a connector that mimics the connector that is in the stock amplifier).
Thanks.

I certainly intend to replace the speakers, but my first goal is to get a nav system in the car.

I guess my question is how hard is it to fabricate a custom bezel? With the appropriate measurements I guess it is just a case of cutting out a piece of plastic to the correct size and creating some mechanism to attach it.
The installation shops clearly have experience doing this, but it is not something that I have attempted. Does anyone have advice on this sort of effort? I have some simple questions like:
- where can I get the best matching plastic
- what is the best means of fastening the bezel
Any other input would be appreciated!

- where can I get the best matching plastic

I will have to change the amp, but I believe that the stock speakers will work. I will eventually want to change them as well as they are fairly low quality. I am aware of the MOST issues, but that aside, before I start ripping stuff out, I want to make sure that I will end up with a clean install.

I have been reading through all of the posts dealing with installations of double din nav units. I am contemplating installing the AVIC-D1 in my 04 C4S. From some of the pictures that I have seen, it is clearly possible to do a very clean looking install of this unit.
It seems from the posts I have read that while there is room for a double din, there will potentially be extra space. Is my understanding correct? If this is the case, are there any spacers available that would correctly fill this space, or alternatively, are there any companies that can fabricate the appropriate spacer?

After having less than good success installing the Sirius antenna near the pollen filter, I finally got the time to pull the front bumper cover and install the antenna on the top of the bumper. The results are fantastic. I have no drop-outs and the antenna is completely invisible (as well as protected from the elements).

After not driving my '97 Boxster for 6 days over the Thanksgiving holiday I went out to unlock and start it this morning. I pressed the key fob to unlock the car and nothing happened. The light on my key flashed as normal. I tried the button that opens the trunk and got the same result. The alarm indicator on my dash was flashing every few seconds as normal. I manually unlocked the car with the key, started it right up and drove to work. The remote worked fine to lock the car when I arrived.
My question is, is this an indication of a low battery (I didn't check the voltage this morning but the car did start right up with no problem) OR does the car go into some sort of hibernation mode after a few days which requires the manual use of the key to disengage it?
Thanks,
Tim
I may be going crazy, but I seem to remember reading something in one of the manuals that said that after 5 days of no use, the remote is disabled.

Thanks for the input. I thought about the placement between the defroster vents as I know that sat nav antenna goes there. At first glance, I thought that the Sirius antenna would be too big, but I did not actually remove the plastic cover and try it. I'll give that a shot next.

I have installed a Sirius receiver in my 04 C4S. I mounted the antenna next to the pollen filter as has been discussed in other threads. I find the reception to be excellent at times, but problematic at others. I was thinking about alternatives. My requirements are as follows:
- Not visible from outside the car
- not covered by any metal
- as close to a 360 degree view of the sky as possible
I was thinking that one such place could be somewhere in the nose. It is not metal, and if the antenna were mounted high enough, it would have an good chance at 360 degree visibility of the sky. Since I have never removed the nose, I don't know if there would be room for the antenna, or a suitable mounting point.
Before I go to the effort of pulling the nose off, I thought I would see if anyone had any thoughts on this. (or if anyone had a better idea!)
- Not visible from outside the car

Interesting. I have also had problems with the radio in my 04 C4S as it has gotten colder. If the car is very cold (sitting outside on a cold day) the radio re-boots repeatedly for the first few minutes. After it warms up, it is fine for the duration of the drive. If it is a warmer day, or if the car is sitting in bright sunlight, this does not happen.
Other than that, I have had no problems in the cold. I have my snow tires on the car, and I intend to drive it every day through the winter.

The light in my rear defrost switch is not coming on ('04 C4S). I wanted to do a bit of diagnosis before I bring it to the dealer. In particular, I want to make sure that it is not a problem that I caused when I had the relay and fuse carriers out to install PSE. I was wondering if anyone knows which relay is used to control the rear defrost (I am assuming it is relay controlled). I was also wondering if there is a wiring diagram available that covers this.
Before someone asks the obvious, I did check to make sure it was not a burnt out fuse!
Thanks,
Pete

I can't see using anything but the default, but here are my 4 choices:
Default (current Blue)
Refault Blue (blue)
Olive You (Green)
Tanned Hide (Beige)

I love the sound of my PSE, and I agree with Loren that it is not unreasonably loud under 4K RPM, but it is certainly louder than with the PSE turned off. That being said, there are production cars that have standard exhausts that are louder than the PSE.
I try to be aware of the situation, for instance, I often leave my house fairly early (pre 7AM) and I always turn the PSE off. I think that it does make a difference, possibly a difference that is more noticeable outside the car than in.
-
When I bought my 2002 996, it came with PSE but without the override switch.
The muffler does get quieter at certain speeds, but I do not know whether this
is due to vacuum or electronics.
I have looked and read ALL the installation descriptions so far, and really cannot
tell what additional parts I need. The engine compartment pics look pretty much like what I have (switch over valve, vacuum hoses, check valve & vacuum canister).
See enclosed pics. I have not taken the interior apart as yet to see whether a wire
travels from the rear to the front of the vehicle, nor what is installed in the fuse box (because I don't know what I am looking for). So my question to you all is:
If I understand you correctly, your car has the valve installed in the engine compartment. As this valve is only driven by the electrical connection, it would seem most likely that you do have the wiring through the car. (I hope you do because that is the ugliest part of the install IMO). Since you mention that the car gets quieter at certain speeds, it would seem that someone went to the trouble of wiring up the relay to get the speed cut-out, but did not install the dash switch. I can't imagine doing this as the install of the dash switch is fairly easy. I'm stumped. Am I missing something here?
-
The reason I ask is because I think I can put the mufflers on. If the dealer is only going to charge 2 hours for the electrical, that sounds like a pretty good deal.
Seems too good to be true. If they are willing to commit to that time/price just for the electric and vacuum work, I would go for it.

I got in my car today and the CDR-23
It happens to mine all the time, I initially thought it was the aircon but later found out that it is the CDR-23 'preparing' itself, calibrating the laser etc.
Sometimes its a few seconds but I did have it calibrating for a entire lap of Snetterton (race circuit in England).....quite annoying!

Interesting. I imagine then that it starts right when I unlock/open the doors (I am assuming this because that is when power is applied to the radio and the light around the power knob begins to glow). This is not a big concern. I was worried that it was doing it the entire time that the car was off and that it would run down the battery.
Thanks for the info.

I got in my car today and the CDR-23 was making a clicking noise. The radio was not on, and I had not yet put the key in the ignition. I pressed the eject button and the CD ejected, and the noise stopped. I put the CD back in, and all seemed fine. At the conclusion of my prior drive I had the radio on but I was not listening to the CD. I did not shut the radio; I just turned off the car.
I thought it might be an isolated incident, but the next time I got in the car, the same noise was happening. So for now I have removed the CD and left it out of the CDR-23.
Has anyone seen this behavior before? Is this a common failure?
In case it matters, the car is an 04 C4S.

wow, never knew you could also install the switch for the PSE (dealer said that if they installed it for me, they would not be able to install the switch). how much did the entire project cost you?
just under 2K

Where in NJ are you? I've been contemplating the PSE as well. Would be great if i can hear it as well.
PM me if you want to meet.
Sirius Install in 996 - C4S

I installed mine under the front bumper cover. It is completely invisible and it works well. It is clearly a bit more work, but it seems to have no "shadow" effects, and gets as good reception as another car that I drive that has a factory install on the roof.
