  1. I replaced the igntion switch this weekend. I got the part from NAPA for $11.12 and the DIY made it a snap. The key and lock work perfectly now! Apparently there was some binding on the switch itself, such that I could only insert or remove the key by twisting the lock mechaism to the left. Works great now. I had also noticed that the heater fan was intermittent, and that problem is fixed now too. The only issue I had is that the battery drained. I had left the key in it and apparently that powers up some circuits, so I had to jump start the car. Again, all is well now, and thanks to everyone for all the help!
  2. My 99, 996 had the same problem. First I had problems getting the key in and out. I had to twist the lock to the left a bit to insert of remove the key. Then I noticed that the heater fan blower was not working. The DIY on the ignition switch was great! I got the part from a local NAPA for only $11.12. The only issue I had was on the set screws that hold the switch. You can't really see them so I did not know if they were Phillips or flat head, so I had to experiment. Turns out you need a small flat head screwdriver to get at them. There is not a lot of room in there, so the shorter the screwdriver handle, the better. A head mounted flash light is also a must. Overall it was not difficult to do, and the DIY was invaluable!
  3. Thanks. If I can't get the lock out, I guess I will have to retain a locksmith.
  4. Thanks so much for responding. I don't mind doing the DIY and I do see several articles posted on how to do it. How do I know if it is really the ignition switch or something in the Tiptronic? I see there is a "park" sensor in that, which would explain why the lock either won't release the key, or won't allow you to insert it...
  5. Hello, I have a similar problem - 1999 911 with Tiptronic. The other day I had trouble getting the key out, but after several attempts, it released. When I went to drive it two days later, now I cannot get the key in - not even a little bit. I tried both keys. Any ideas??
