  1. I had the 3 inch chrome headlight washer plate blow off on my Turbo. I bought the new part, but does anyone know how to install this part. I assume I have to take the headlight unit apart, thanks Mike

    Did you buy the complete head light washer assembly, see attached photo. After doing two cars, four washer assemblies, I removed the bottom stem and then installed the entire new assembly by holding down the assembly while another person turned on the head light washer. I had the added problem of dealing with the thickness of the Techart head light covers and this was the only way I could get the assembly installed. The chrome cover is easy to break when you try to take it on and off the stem.

    Good luck,

    Larry

    I assume this is for manual models only?

    Jinster,

    I don't know, might be a good idea to call Patrick Motorsports in Phoenix 602-244-0911. On Monday I will check with Tim Benson, Fastlane Porsche Repair and get back with his answer.

    Good luck,

    Larry

    Jinster,

    Tim doesn't know best if you call Patrick Motorsports.

  5. Had them painted at a local body shop, installed them by taking the headlight assembly out to cement the cover on, used card board and wire ties to hold them on while the cement dried over night.  I got the complete washer inserts (Porsche dealer) which the body shop painted. The cement comes with the covers.

    Good Luck,

    Larry

    Just curious, since you cemented the covers on...why didn't you just paint the headlights? I thought the Techart covers could be removed?

    Haven't seen the headlights painted, would like to see an example. Don't know if you could remove the cemented covers, not sure why I would remove them. If I wanted to do that I would just buy new head lights.

  6. Did Tim Benson help you with that?

    The tech session at his shop and wine tasting was last October.  How about if you hit on Tim for a repeat this October.

    Tim was in-between helpers so I pull out the transaxel and Tim installed the differential and I put it back in the car after he also replaced the rear main seal. Sure learned allot working with him.

    The important point about the RMS replacement is that the engine had 3,500 miles since being installed. This a 3.4L 996 E-gas motor new from Porsche.

    Will talk to Tim next week.

    Larry

  7. Where did you get them?  Looks nice!

    Got them from the Techart dealer in LA.

  8. :drive:

    Last Sunday we drove the car for the first time with the LSD and what a ride!

    It was the last PCA-LPR autoX of the season with 47 drivers with around 35 cars. The results have not been posted yet but we may have run 2nd and 3rd over all with a ultra light full race 914 in first place. I can tell you there were some 911's working very hard to beat the Monster Boxster. But the real credit goes to the Quaife torque biasing differential, we accelerated faster and corner much faster.

    You can view Quaife's web site:

    http://www.quaifeamerica.com/

    Three parts were purchased from Patrick Motorsports in Phoenix: 1. Quaife Torque Biasing Differential, 2. Side Cover, 3. Bearing. Total with shipping $1,827.51.

    This is the best single mod that I have done in terms of performance improvement.

  9. Thanks again Larry.

    The part number will be great. Going fishing for 10 days. Hope the car will be done when I get home.

    Thanks again.

    Larry

    Did you get a chance to get the part number for the clutch?

    Thanks

    Hi, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, had a alarm condition on my boat down in the Harbor. This EVO link will ID the pressure plate/ clutch, your locate Porsche parts dealer can ID the correct Sach's P/N which could be cheaper than EVO.

    http://www.evoms.com/porsche%20ec%20art.htm

    I got my parts guy to look at the EVO site and gave me the parts, I didn't retain the P/N data.

    Good luck,

    Larry

  10. I have an 02 996TT-X50. It has the GT2 K24 turbo and GT2 intercoolers. It also has the fabspeed exhaust with the Gemballa programing. The car is putting out 570 HP. The clutch was never upgraded.  Now it slips during hard accelerations. Slips starts around 3500~4000 RPM.

    My questions is. Is there any adjustment I can make or should I just upgrade to a stronger clutch?  Can anyone recommend a unit which I should go with?

    Thanks

    Ed.

    Have 2001 996TT Evo stage 2 clutch started slipping, installed Sach 3500 lb pressure plate and new clutch. As far as I know there isn't any adjustment. The clutch slave cylinder with power assist does not have a problem with the heavier pressure plate. It has been in for 10,000 miles, no problems.

    Good luck,

    Larry :drive:

  11. Maybe this is a stupid question, but here goes:

    What would be wrong with transplanting a 996 3.6L into a non E-Gas boxster?

    If a suitible mechanical throttle body with a compatible 986 TPS were mounted to the 3.6, why couldn't the Box run the motor?

    If the answer is DME related, why couldn't an airflow converter be used in conjunction with the DME to trim the fuel?

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~
    insite
    No it is not a stupid question, the problem people have encounted with the 3.6L in any Boxster older than 2002 is the wiring and ECU. If you go on Ruf's web site they show 3.4L for 2001 & 2002 and 3.6L for 2002, 03 & 04. There is an engine builder who will take your engine and turn it into a 4L motor approaching 400hp. The builder I talked to is Protomotive in Southern California just south of Riverside. You can get to their web site at www.geocities.com/protomotive. Todd was the guy I talked with about a year ago. I sure there are other builders out there that can do the job.
    Good luck,
    Larry
  12. A lot of the people out here on the left coast have swapped at least the fronts out for iron.  If you use them hard you will find that they will start to flake or pit.  You will see this start to happen within 10 track days.
    Many people have had them replaced once by Porsche under warranty.  After that you are on your own.
    If you want more stories search on PCCB on rennlist and 6speedonline.
    Porsche now has second generation PCCB that fix the first generation problems. There were articles in both Panorama and Christophorus covering the improved PCCB brakes.
  13. Here's an example of what I consider to about the best possible set of engine upgrades to a Boxster S:
    http://tinyurl.com/d6hqk
    Andy dyno'ed his car at 251 HP at the rear wheels and estimated that represented about 291 HP at the crank.
    If you want to keep the costs down, you could just upgrade the headers, intake and add a chip. That might get you close to 30 HP.
    Cheers,
    Kevin
    anyone can guide me to how to pump up the boxter s hp ? , i have a yr 2000
    S , is there any chip tuning or exhaust ?
    thanks  :cheers:
    How much power do you want ? How much money do you want to spend ? Kevin is correct on what it takes to do 30 HP, that's around $2,500 to $3,000. If you want much more power put a 3.4L 996 motor in with intake, exhaust and ECU remap. Done right you spend $20,000.00 plus. In time you will need brakes, wheels and suspension for even more fun. Enjoy what ever you do it's all fun. :jump:
    Good luck,
  14. I apprecaite all of you guys taking your time out to give me some feedback, I'm bringing it into a certified Porsche mechanic tommorow to have him take a look at everything. I have an aftermarket warranty with Warranties 4 Wheels, so worst case scenario that should cover any serious damage. Thanks again!
    Manny
    Manny,
    Had the same problem in my 2001 996TT last year, turns out Porsche knew about the problem, had tech notes from the factory. They repaired no charge, thank you Porsche.
    Also, I have Evo stage 2, B&M short shifter.
  16. yea I been looking at some with lots of miles 70k + that I can pick for 9 or 10k so that is why I can spend about 30K more thatn that I would be on Elise territory but after last week Auto cross and seeing the elise lac of power I rather have a 986 :)
    Look at the attached picture from Laguna Seca. the Elise could not catch us let alone pass. All the Boxster ever needed was more power. At 3000 lbs the Boxster out handles many cars, all you need is more HP.
    When you buy your Elise come and see us on Laguna Seca, & Thunderhill, or Button Willow.
    Good luck,
    Larry
  17. I would think that the newest 986 S would make the best swap. Brakes on the S are, I think, the same size as a 996 (or if not exactly the same, pretty close). You could put a 3.6L eGas engine in a late model, which would give you ~30 more HP than a 3.4. Five-speed vs. six-speed pretty much comes down to personal preference.
    The only issues with using a later model is that they are heavier than the earlier models, and a late model S would probably cost around $20K more to begin with than an early mode.
    You can put a 3.6L E-gas in the 2002, 2003 & 2004, 3.4L E-gas in 2000 & 2001, 1999 and earlier 3.4L mechanical linkage.
    Check for compability between the Boxster and 996 ECU for the year you select.
    Good luck,
    Larry
  18. Sorry, that picture is too small try this one.
    Larry
    i'm looking to put a rear wing on my 986. i've seen the ones that replace the up/down factory spoiler and also the tequipment aerokit version. any other suggestions on aftermarket spoilers? of course, i don't want the tin slab of metal that people seem to enjoy putting on civics. i wish i could find something as cool as the ones that come on the 996's. any ideas??
