  1. Personally I would pass - an owner (or series of owners) that neglects their car cosmetically probably neglects it mechanically as well. But if you're still incline to investigate - have a good look into that 'new' engine ('new' as in new for that car, or 'new' as in just off the Porsche assembly line?). Get the engine number off the car - that at least will tell you what the manufacture year was.
  2. ...Assuming you paid the going market rate when you bought your car, you *must* have noticed that it's already lost most of its value. It's not an investment (not in the financial sense anyway). Drive it. Enjoy it. Don't worry about depreciation. As for irregular maintenance, listen to your car (it does have 130K km after all), don't ignore anything that sounds or feels out of the ordinary. At some point you may wish to install the soon to be released IMS warning system from Flat 6 - or if you have to drop your tranny for any reason, get the LNE IMS retrofit done.
  3. I empathize with your frustration - mine was with a '97 M3 a number of years ago (seemed like a good idea at the time - it wasn't). A couple of things to keep in mind: 1. It is a 13 year old car - 'common' problems are going to happen 2. Porsche learned a lot through the evolution of the 996 and on to the 997. Yours is the first generation water cooled car and it's generally accepted that Porsche worked out a bunch of issues throughout the life of the series. So, you could decide that you've hit most of the issues and it should be clear sailing for while - or you might be wondering what's next - and there's so many things that can break on an older car ;-) If you decide to sell it, you could move to a newer 996 ('02+) or even a older 997 as they are becoming more generally affordable as well - and reduce (but not remove) the risk of major maintenance. If you decide to keep it, remind yourself that the market had already factored in the maintenance in the price of your car - and you're probably still 'ahead' by 50~60K over a maintenance free new 997.
  4. Unfortunately 996 MKIs haven't been doing so well in the resale area. A 996 cab will realistically list for 15K - 35K. Your car is not typical however. - The ultra low mileage may appeal to a collector (not sure how many 996 collectors there are though...). As a car to drive it doesn't add a lot of value though. A car with too few miles can be problematic. - The body kit and other mods are neat (I like them anyway). Doesn't sound like it's an actual Gemballa car(?) That would add a premium. Otherwise it's like any other body kit. Ultimately it's worth what someone's willing to pay for it. If *I* were in the market (I'm not) I would probably be looking at it in the high 20's to low 30's.
  5. It *might* be the bearings - especially if they were over tightened on assembly.
  6. Yes, it is a slippery slope (help! I'm falling! :D ) The only comments I'll make in my defence are: - Tuning my car is 50-75% of the fun for me. - I can spend incrementally on mods as I can afford it - I *love* my car
  7. Sorry but 24 HP from a different air cleaner? I think Porsche would have thought of that. I don't personally think it's 24 HP either (as I say, not recently dyno'd) and it's not the cleaner, but the reduction in intake resistance. The V-flow intake states 10-12 gain, even that's a likely a stretch, however, most of the track cars I've seen up close have the V-flow intake and I'm assuming they didn't just do it for looks, I went with the K&N because it was budget-friendly and seemed to have a similar design concept.
  8. What do you consider inexpensive? I changed the intake for the K&N 57 series (~$350). They state a gain of ~24HP. I haven't put it on the dyno since. Took me an afternoon to install (level 1 on the DIY difficulty scale)
