  1. Hi all and thanks ahead of time.

Backed out the 1999/ 911/ 996 with 72000 miles yesterday and took it for a 20 mile ride(first time in 1 month). I notice a small (3-4 drops) oil leak under driver side and left side of engine. First time I've seen this. (I'm Worried about IMS failure)

Also...The start up noise(cold or hot) is horrible for about 2-3 seconds.

Should I expect this, is the above normal?

    Any answers would be helpful.

  2. Friends, Happy New Year 2011,

I'm new to the site, but it is clear to me that it's success is directly related to the contribution of certain individuals.

My small monetary injection was paid back within minutes of my joining.

    For that, thank you Loren.

Please continue to keep this site relevant to all of us .

Thank you and HAPPY NEW YEAR, Loren ~ cheers.gif ~ and to all of those that make it happen for all of us . . . . . .

This goes double for me ....Thanks Loren

  3. Do a search here and on rennlist and 6peedonline. This has been discussed many times. Low end $600-$700 in parts (LNE bearing and flywheel bolts) and do it your self. Higher end can be $2,000-$3,000+ if you do clutch, flywheel, tensioners, AOS, etc. while you are in there.

    Thanks

Did a search, got a lot of stuff about the IMS but you are the first one with a estimate.

    thanks again

  4. I normally drive my car all winter, except this winter, as I am going to be away for 8 weeks. I live in house with no garage, but rent an underground condo space nearby, unfortunatly there is no available electric supply for a trickle charger or maintainer. I have just had a new battery installed (died in downtown Toronto a couple of weeks ago!). I have no one to move my car while I am away. During the winter, when the snow is too deep to drive, or icy, if I am not driving for a few days, I hook up a small solar charger to my cigarette lighter .... but doubt this will help underground under flourescent light???

Has anyone any suggestions as to how I can save my new battery? the dealership told me that if I allow the battery to go flat, and then recharge it, it will never recover?

and.. should I inflate my tires? put something under them to avoid contact with the cement floor? fill the gas tank?

What can I do? all suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

Mines sitting till winter is over.

    1. Change oil and filter

    2. 45-50 psi in tires and put the car on old or scrap carpet. Put the car on jack stands would be better.

    3. take out the battery and store it on a 2x6 (or a piece of wood)indoors where it will not freeze.

    4. wipe down leather w/a good protectant

    5. cover car with a dust cover.

When you take it out of storage, you will have to reset the engines computer at a dealer or someone with a scan tool.

  5. Contact Deltran customer service and see if anyone near you sells the cigarette lighter adapter. Chances are nobody does and odds are good they will just send you one as goodwill. Then just connect it to your cigarette lighter plug, which works the best. There's a notch in the bottom of the driver door rubber seal to route the maintainer cable through. Or you could always order one through Amazon

    Thank you geoff but

Cig. lighter is dead(the fuse is ok). I did a check and could not find a problem w/the lighter. I will tackle that lighter in the Spring.

Question still is, can I connect it to the recommended jumper ports?

If the lighter socket doesnt work, dont take the chance of connecting via the jumper ports. I would think its best to connect directly to the battery.

    Thanks

  7. I'm just going by what the book says.

    SAE Viscosity Range Synthetic oil.

What book are you reading? Become a member and download the oil TSB...the only recommended oils are 0W40, 5W40 and 5W50.

    page 138 of owners manual.

UPDATE took out the 10-30 found 10-40 and put it in today.

THANKS ALL FOR YOUR HELP AND RECOMMENDATIONS

    GREAT SITE GREAT HELP

  8. I run 5W40 Mobil 1 and see about 1.5 bar at idle (800 rpm or thereabouts) and 2.5 to 3.0 bar at 3000 rpm when the engine is fully hot. (It pegs at 5.0 bar until the car warms up fully.)

10W40 is more viscous than Porsche recommends for the 996 and you might experience problems with the VarioCam...at least that's what I've read. If it does you'll be greeted with a CEL. If you run problem-free then fine, otherwise consider changing to 5W40.

I'm just going by what the book says.

    SAE Viscosity Range Synthetic oil.

    higher than 50 degrees F = 10 w40

    15 w40

    15 w50

    lower than 50 degrees F = 10 w40

    10 w30

    5 w30

At no place in my owners manual does it say 0 w40 or even 5 w40.

BUT I will drain it with your advice.

    thanks again

    UPDATE:

Changed oil today. I could not find 0w 40 but I did get w0-30.

It did drop my oil pressure to 4.5 at 3000 rpms and 2.0 at idle
