  1. Ok, called a few dealers and here's what I found out.

56 (replaced 55) does not show up as being superseded by 57.

Only 54 shows up as being replaced by 57.

I guess when I get my hands on 57 next week I'll share whatever info I can about it.

FYI the dealer could not find 57 in his version of PET either - had to go into Polaris for super session/availability inquiry.

Please share your findings. I am looking at replacing my tensioners as well in my 2000 C2 Cab and your experience would be helpful.

  2. Actual procedure turns out to be:

Remove 2 mounting bolts with 10 mm socket on tranny side of AOS ~ 2 minutes

Squeeze collars and pull off large connections ~ 20 minutes

Compress hose clips on the 2 small hoses and move clips off connectors ~ 1.5 hrs

Remove small hoses from AOS ~ 1 minute

Jiggle out AOS and remove via bottom ~ 2 minutes

Hate those small hose clips. They will be replaced.

  3. Here is an easy one. One thing I did not like on my 996 was how long the shifter was. My prior car had a shorter shifter and the travel required to change gears on the 996 was bugging me. I did some reading and found many short throw shifter packages out there for $200+. I came up with a $0 solution. I pulled off my shifter knob and leather boot assembly, cut the metal rod down by about 1-1.5" and put the shifter assembly back on. See the attached for basic instructions on how to get the shifter off. Once you unclip the leather boot simply pull off the press fit knob (mine was a little different than the pics in the attached). I pressed a large garbage bag over the rod so that no metal chips would end up in the car. With a hack saw I cut the rod back 1-1.5". Clean up. Put a little lock-tite on the tip of the rod and press the Knob back in place. Then clip the boot in place and your done. $0 and 1 hour max. Let me know what you think.

    Any pics?

  4. My air pump was doing the same thing, nasty squeal when cold. I took it apart and found it chock full of brake dust. I blew it out with compressed air, cleaned it all up and oiled the bearings and it has been quiet for over one year now. Super easy fix.

Thanks EastBay! I have been working too much lately to get at a look at this but hope to in the coming week. I suspected a bit of service like you've described was all it would take. It only happens every once in a while but I like to address any symptoms as soon as possible. I'll post my findings once I get it out and have a peek.

    Much appreciate your input!

  5. I am interested in spiffing up the bland interior of my Ocean Blue exterior, Metropol Blue interior 2000 C2 Cabrio and I am looking for inspiration.

Who has re-covered their black gauge faces?

Anyone used the dash trim kits to add contrast and color?

Anyone gone wild with leather re-painting?

Your experience, pictures, sources and suggestions would be appreciated.

I added CF parts (from MACarbon) and then did red leather accents, new steering wheel, red trimmed mats...pics are in my sig link.

    Thanks. Very nice!

  7. I've had this fantastic car for a little over a year and it came with a new top. When I cycle the top to close it, the closing latch hook doesn't quite reach the latch socket (on the windshield frame) on the first cycle. If I continue to hold down the switch it will finally stretch out enough to catch but only on it's second or third attempt. After that everything is fine, windows come up, etc. I asked a mech about it and they said that it would stretch out in the summer but it hasn't. I've just been reaching up and pulling down on the top to help it out but would prefer that it worked as designed. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. BTW - its a 996

I had the very same problem with my 00 C2 Cab. I followed the procedure in the DIY section to top up the hydraulic fluid reservoir (which did turn out to be low) and it works perfectly now. Link below.

  8. You do know the air pump is supposed to stop after 30 seconds to 2 minutes?

I thought so, thanks for the confirmation. The whine it is making is very high pitched and not normal. If I can stop it from failing I'd like to. I may just pull it apart to have a look if I can do anything.

Is the only time this pump runs when the engine is cold or does it supplement air flow at other times too?

This forum is a tremendous resource and I appreciate everyone's input.
