  1. One note. When I tried to get the front taken care of in a C4, the front halfshaft seemed to limit travel of the suspension enough that I could not get the strut out of the wheel well, even with a little bit of spring compression. Does that half-shaft have to be removed (the whole wheel carrier I guess would have to be disconnected at that point) in order to get the front strut assembly out? David
  2. I have the parts and tools required to change the fluid, just haven't gotten around to it yet. Will happen this weekend. I hope that makes this odd feeling go away. I was thinking it might just be air in the lines, as well. I've had the car for a year. Don't know when the original owner changed the fluid (if ever!). Thanks, David
  3. I have a 2002 C4 with about 32,000 miles on it. I think I'm due for a new clutch, but something has been perplexing me recently. Ordinarily at the point in time, the clutch starts engaging with the pedal a little bit high off the floor, but that is presumably due to wear. Not really slipping, as best as I can tell. But what has me perplexed is this. If I take a spirited run up the RPMs once or twice, after that the clutch pedal goes very soft. Very little resistance to pushing the pedal down to the floor to change gears. After a while of "cooling off" with some ginger driving, the clutch pedal regains its usual feel. Any thoughts on what causes this? Thanks, David
  4. One note to ambitious DIY modders. I had an X74 arrive a couple of days ago and got all excited about installing it according to the directions above. I got stuck when I realized that C4's have a driveshaft coming from the front differential which complicates the install. The instructions didn't mention anything about that drive shaft and seemed to rely on some more movement of the control arm/wheel carrier assembly in order to tease the old spring/shock out. This motion is severely restricted because of the half-shaft sitting there. So I abandoned and put her back together again. I'm going to have to shop this around to find a good installer in the Maryland/DC area. Unless someone can point me in the direction of how to get the half-shaft off the wheel hub and let me know how easy/difficult that task really is. David
  5. Thanks for the info, and the link! I'll take a look at it. David
  6. Does anyone know if the front differential on the C4 is the same between the 1999-2001 models and the 2002+ updated models? Is there a Porsche parts CD-ROM that could be used to see if the part numbers are the same? I'm assuming that the whole front differential can be purchased as one whole unit. Thanks, David
  7. It's been a little while since this thread has been active. But I'm currently mulling the thought of a RoW M030 vs. a X74 suspension change for a 2002 C4 cab as well. Are there any long-term perspectives you can share now that it has been on for a while? I'm especially interested if this becomes intolerable on a convertible. Even with my US stock suspension, when the top is up, there are a lot of pieces rattling in the car. All in the top mechanism, I presume, because when the top is down the car is a lot more quiescent. I wonder whether this would be excessively exacerbated by the stiffer X74 suspension. Any other feedback would be appreciated before I place an order. Thanks, David
  8. Can anyone tell me if the Boxster floor mats are the same shape as the 996 floor mats? Thanks, David
  9. I don't think he had a 1999 (I think it was a 2002), but a guy in the DC area installed a PCM2 system in a car that had no navigation system to start with. He said parts alone were about $3500. I have PCM1 in my car, and my impression is that it is not worth spending that much money for the quality and sophistication of the Porsche navigation system. I'm not being harsh on Porsche alone, because I feel the same way about the Navigation system BMW put into my 2003 M5. The Japanese systems are much more functional. That being said, I don't know if PCM2 is a huge improvement over PCM1. I'd just go get one of the portable systems for 1/4-1/3 the cost -- and have the ability to take it with you to another car when the need arises. Best wishes, David
  10. I have the 08/2004 update with 3 CD's as well if you want to buy a set much cheaper than Navteq will sell it to you for. And I have gone round and round about this as well. Porsche discs needed for Porsche navigation systems. They stated that even with the same brand of navigation hardware (drive, electronics, etc) that another auto manufacturer's discs would not work. Give me a shout if you want my set. David
