  1. If the object is to put more tire on the car you'd have to checkout widths and the aspect ratio needed to avoid changing the rolling radius and the speedometer reading. There will be an increase in unsprung weight. If you only want wider wheels and same tires you might or might not gain something from having the sidewalls more vertical. Depends on the specs for min/max wheel width for the tires. Tire Rack can help with that info.
  2. IF you want to teach her to shift I recommend you have someone else do it. I had same problem with my now-ex. Hired a driving school instructor to teach her in my 914. She picked it up easily according to him. Only one lesson required. Enjoy the car AND the shotgun.
  3. +1 And API SL minimum, SH or SJ better. Porsche specs 0W-40, 5W-40 and 5W-50. I agree with not using 0W and making sure oil is full synthetic. I'm currently using 5W-40 Motul 300V (not on P-approved list) and toying with 10 or 15W for spring's oil change. ZDDP is your engine's friend (are your friends?), but some worry about cat damage from it.
  4. I'm going with the LNE part when I change coolant in the spring. I try to split my business between Charles Navarro at LN and Jake Raby and support them both because of the effort they have put into the M96 engine. I've already have the spin-on oil filter adapter and am very pleased with the quality. If you don't know, they have both been well known and respected in the 914 community for a long time.
  5. Glad to hear it is okay! Who is doing the IMS bearing upgrade? Dealer or indie? Who made the bearing? OEM or?
  6. The plug has a red slash thru a smoking cigarette. I use the BMW plug from wife's X5 armrest storage area. It matches the matte black horse collar well, but not the switches. I added the ashtray replacement part when the Box was new. Handier for cell phone.
  7. Most radiophiles do not seem to like the whole Becker line used in modern Porsches. I'm not sure about 77s, but it was likely a Blaupunkt. It was a Frankfurt version in my 70. Try this site.   8. Other than putting 10,000 volts and about 400 amps on the car, I'd say your best bet is to put the car in a secure storage facility. Some will start the car and run it periodically. Others will provide AC power for a battery maintainer. Alarm systems are pretty much ignored based on my observations.
  9. Not to be a ninny, but gas can be dangerous - especially in the garage or near a gas water heater or furnace. The evaporated vapor is heavier than air and can build up in an area. And yes, I admit I've used it.
  10. Oddly a lot of the good stuff that protects engines can harm cats. Not just in diesel oils. JFP has good advice on the Euro ratings. I'd add API SL rating as a minimum and recommend SH or SJ as better choices. Some Porsche approved oils don't live up to these API numbers.
  11. My DRL hack is to turn the fogs on manually. HIDS does not come on. I usually only use on two-lane roads. And I want to be able to turn lights off at times while the engine is on.
  12. Older 911s can be reliable daily drivers, but not for me. Maybe as a weekend/special events car. They are great cars. Problems can be very expensive to fix. Get the Excellence magazine with the analysis for that year by Bruce Anderson. They sell back issues. Bruce sells some reviews from his site. PCA Special Interest Group also helpful. DC area had several good independent shops as of when I left there in 82. Not sure about now or Baltimore. You are a lucky man if a dealer can be trusted with an older car. Not around here! If you have not looked at a lot of cars, do NOT fall in love with the first one you find. And for goodness sakes get a PPI!
  13. Probably not too straightforward. But check the DIYs on upgrading engines to 3.4 or larger if nothing shows for 2.7 to 3.2. Both use the DME 7.2, so maybe not too hard. At least will need to PST/PIWIS to tell the ECU it is a 3.2. And I believe the 2000 2.7 is M96.22?
  14. Try search function. I know the 986 has been covered, but not sure of 987. No need to remove 986 top. Trick is to use plastic bag (like done for dog poop) to avoid dropping parts into the abyss.
  15. I just got this from Escort and there was not a review yet when I went to the site. Haven't checked Radar Roy. It is semi-custom mount with laser shifter optional.   17. Just a thought that might be way off. I saw over at Caymen Club (9 World now??) that the pinouts on the CDR-24 are the same as the 23. Don't know if that offers any additional benefits or even if it fits the same hole. Might allow the Porsche iPod interface to work. Maybe even has an aux-in. There was a DIY on same site to aux-in thru pins to the rear panel of the CDR-24.
  18. I recently had similar problem when my 6 year old battery was in its last days. New battery solved for me.
  19. Hmmmm? You mean when you turn switch counterclockwise it doesn't snap back down? Or it snaps down/off but the fogs still come on without pulling the switch? What happens when you pull to turn on the rear fog?
