  1. Thanks for quick reply Loren. I'm ordering the plugs and sleeves for both sides of the hard top and windshield. When installed and tested, will let you know. Don't know how simple wiring sleeve apparently dried up and cracked. As far as I know, car from TX originally, garaged there and since mine, has also been garaged, so it has been in controlled environment its life. This should've precluded anything drying out in the car. Fortunately not a major problem. Walt M.
  2. Much of the wiring in my car's light assemblies have cracks in the insulation/wiring plastic sleeves. All but one of the cracks that affected lighting the bulb have been fixed by taping over the cracks. The wire for the rear fog light pax side has sleeve cracks but taping it still doesn't allow the fog light bulb to work. Not a safety issue here in VA but if there's a quick fix without replacing the whole rear light assembly, any suggestions? Thanks.
  3. Thanks Loren. I'll try to order the centering pegs and caps via sunset and when install and test drive will let you know.
  4. Have had recurring noise when hard top installed every winter since obtained car Jan 2011. Top fits perfectly as windows are plumb and no leaks. Noise is from nylon plugs/prongs that fit each side of top of windshield that apparently move in the slots when I drive over rough roads, secondary and interstate. Rear connections are correct. Have put white grease in the slots but no help. Noise has gotten worse each winter. No noise with cabrio top. Do the nylon prongs wear out to a point that they're too narrow to fit the slots correctly? Is there a fix such as a rubber gasket or nylon sleeve that can be fit over the prongs to fill the gap, if the space in the slots is the problem? Maybe a caulk that only dries semi hard in the slots to fill the void? I really would like to fix this problem since believe the Porsche cabrio with hard top is the best looking profile. Had a 356 with hard top but it had latches on each side to affix to the windshield and that worked. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. Walt M.
  5. Have had 2000 C2 since Jan 2011 and have used hard top every winter since then. Even though top is secure and plumb, doesn't leak and windows tight, top still is noisy when hit bumps. Noise is located at side nylon prongs that fit in windshield slots. Don't have noise with soft top secured to windshield. Has anyone added filler in the windshield slots to reduce the tops prong movement, for example? Any other suggestions other than simply have to live with it, possible due to poor design? Didn't have the problem with hard top mounted on my 1965 356. Thanks.
  6. 2000 c2 with original single CD radio. Can it be modified to accommodate an iphone so I can play music via an app from my phone through the radio speakers? Thanks.
  7. debris in front grill area Use flashlight and soft hose vacuum to remove the debris. Have to do this periodically, depending on geographical location. Be careful so as not to damage the AC. Author moondoggy Category Carrera (996) - Common Fixes and Repairs Submitted 10/28/2014 08:08 AM

  9. Update on the tranny. REconfirmed from dealer and local porsche garage that it's the tranny pinion bearing and other research led me to believe I shouldn't wait for it to get louder before fixing it. Found to my pleasant surprise brand new tranny from factory at DCautomotive (owner, Robert), in Rocky Mount, NC. Bought it, they installed it and new LN IMS bearing. Driving the car with more confidence now and that leads into a more enjoyable drive also. DCautomotive did a great job and I have no problem referring them to you. He has a hugh selection of porsche parts and carcasses, to include my used tranny that's for sale.
  10. Amazing because I got same answer for non synthetic oil from both central VA porsche dealers. Last year I used mobil synthetic 75w90 and was rethinking that maybe I should flush again. Owners manual obviously incomplete when it simply refers to 75w90, no mention of synthetic or not. Thanks.
  11. 2000 C2 with 60k miles, manual tranny. Local porsche dealer says not to use synthetic oil, use GL5; whereas renntech DIY notes synthetic. Then, one of the older posts warns not to use 75w90 from car parts store because need to use mobil DELVAC, which normally can't be bought from them and need to order it. Can you clarify? Thanks.
  12. Appears from your list of cars that you're very familiar with buying high end cars so I think you really want this car and may be willing to put up with the dealer's nonsense notwithstanding. My familiarity with PPIs is that whoever pays for it, owns the results and which aren't required to be published by the owner. Maybe the dealer senses that you want the car too badly and is testing you. THey're unreasonable but you can test their desire to sell it by, for ex., offering a contract in writing that you'll buy it for your price IF your PPI doesn't come up with major problems. An '85 with 150k is very suspicious since, for ex., I don't know how all the maintenance docs could have been obtained from whoever they bought it from (even if they kept them). If they won't accommodate a simple PPI under your requirements, it appears that car isn't the one to renew memories. Also, you can buy another '85 and have it repainted. Good luck and if you buy it, let us know if your gut instinct was correct afterall.
  13. Read Sept 2013 Autoweek rather uncomplimentary article, 'Yeah, there is a substitute,' on this issue whereby Porsche will pay with conditions for cars sold Jan 2001 through Dec 2005. It states there's a suspense of Oct 15, 2013 for claim's submission.
  14. In preparation to do oil change on my 00 C2 using renntech DIY, started to order the SS plug from Sunset and they advised that Porsche doesn't recommend it because it's too strong for the oil pan metal and causes problems. The SS plug is an exhaust plug and only coincidentally is same size as oil pan plug. They would sell it to me but provided the above info and I didn't order it. FYI.
  15. Forgot to add lessons learned. Because I was so low on fluid, could've used large cooking basting syringe due to amount of fluid needed. Used child's syringe and took more fills. A simple drinking flex straw worked fine vs a tube. Also, use good angle hex wrench because if use cheap one, could slip in the hole. Bought mine from Sears (some tools made in China are better than others). Nut was very tight like factory tight and had to apply pressure (with good wrench) to break the seal. Put towel under work area to capture fluid that might drip in areas of car difficult to clean. Used 2 flat edge screw drivers to carefully remove the 4 plastic locks for the carpet.
  16. Successfully filled the container with fluid from NAPA. Had my son in law help me (or vice versa) who's a dentist and used to leaning over and working in confined spaces with a syringe, tube, fluid and a hole. Top properly operates now. Great DIY procedures and thanks again to renntech.
  17. I have 2000c2 cabrio with hard top. Keep mine stored in ceiling mount designed and bought via internet for the top during summer. With this mount, a one man job to simply and carefully keep pressure on rope/pully while lifting off and attaching, with car centered under it. Keep heavy pad on rear in case I lower or remove badly. No separate wiring for rear windor heater. Great storage and doesn't require extra room for floor rack and believe less chance of damage to body. Plus, my opinion is that with on, nicer profile than coupe. You may remember that there was an early 356 coupe that looked like the 356 cabrio with hard top on.
  18. Same top, now much noisier maybe due to a lapse in memory when I removed the wind deflector, placed it on the front part of the top while folded down, then forgot to remove it when I put the top up and found it sitting on the front of the top once attached to the windshield. Hopefully, the weight of the windscreen didn't stretch something in the motor mechanism or cause the motor undue stress. Windscreen not that heavy. Much noisier since that incident. Top moves up and down but much noisier now and slight hesitation. With that background, do we have something I can do to reduce the noise and speed up the up and down process or do we thing I have a major problem now with the motor itself, for example, and maybe need to visit the dealer. Or, maybe fair wear and tear. Thanks.
  19. Thanks and your description of the hard top installed makes sense. Awaiting anybody who can address potential for lubing the cabrio mechanism.
  20. 2000 c2 cabrio at 57k miles. Is there a need to lube the cabrio frame/mechanism? Top makes some creaking sounds when opening and closing but does so with no problems. Is this normal? Also, regarding the rear water drains in the cabrio, are they functional when the optional hard top is installed? Thanks.
  21. There's not much use for the word "gentle" in porsche vocabulary, with a certain exception: it's not gentle on your pocketbook and you don't drive it gently; but, you have to be a gentleman when someone at a parking lot asks you why you didn't buy a 'vette. Nevertheless, drive the "h" out of it and have a ball like the rest of us.
  22. Ok, so I'm not used to manhandling such a car (and would have no hesitation for my 03 ford explorer). Anyway, I'm still stymied regarding "unpluging the old lighter from wiring harness prior to proceeding." Do you mean that I still have to remove the dashboard cover of the three buttons plus lighter? Directions show disengaging the cover by pushing up but for whatever reason, my cover won't "push up." And yes, the kit includes a replacement bezel. Thanks for your continued interest.
  23. Guys, I'm stymied. Based on picture instructions, failed to "disengage the cover upwards" which assume is dash frontage piece that includes three buttons above lighter and the lighter. Otherwise, only able to pull lighter (clear plastic bezel?) out of hole for about half inch then it gets hung up and am leary of pulling too hard and do damage. Any other help/diagrams? Also assume don't have to disconnect battery.
  24. Unfortunately, not enough for me. Ex., disconnect battery prior to using the screw driver? Plus, how to get behind it, especially since I have no glove box. Assume since covered in past, I should search for it further in renntech. Thanks.
  25. I have the kit. Anyone have info on removing original and replacing with new lighter. Thanks.
