  1. Hi all, My "TC Off" light comes on occassionally and was wondering if anyone knew why it could be happening. I've seen posts where people say their TC and ABS lights come on, but for me it's just the TC light, and if it comes on it's always from when I start the car. If I shut off the car, then start it again, usually it's resolved. When it comes on this way, the TC switch doesn't make any difference (i.e. I can't turn the light off again with the TC switch - only by shutting off the car then starting it again). Presumably while this light is on my traction control is not functioning, and I'm guessing it's because of a detected fault. I'm guessing I'm going to need a PST2 or Durametric to figure this out... but if anyone had any idea of common causes, would be great. It doesn't happen all the time - I'd say once every 50 starts, so it's fairly rare (2% of the time). Also, will the ECU remember the codes for the TC malfunction? Presumable I can retrieve the code later even if the fault isn't currently manifested. Thanks! S.
  2. PSS9 coilovers are awesome. Just got mine on as I've decided to putting my Boxster in to more track driving, but the PSS9's are great for street too (set around 7 on the shock). They are more than double what the Designtek ones are (at about £1700), but I've seen a few negative reviews of Designtek stuff (especially their exhausts) so not sure I'd trust my handling to them (especially at such a low cost). I've only managed to find one guy who reviewed putting their coilovers (on a 996). He was happy overall, but had to do a lot of adjustments to get there, and didn't have a long term review. Also you should really make sure you have a good adjustable rear toe arm and adjustable droplinks so you can properly align it all (I used Tarrett Engineering stuff for the adjustables and love them). Anyway, if you are on a budget, I'd personally go with the seperate shocks/springs, and run stock heights so you don't need the adjustable arms/links. I used to run a Bilstein/H&R combo on my TT and it performed very well on both street and track. Thanks! S.
  3. So I just rebuilt the bearings... New grease, cleaned, and they slide super-smooth now. I hope I don't have any issues! If anyone has any comments, feel free! Thanks! S.
  4. Just inspected and cleaned the bearing plates. They look in great condition with the only impairment being the dent of the old spring in the rubber. Doesn't seem like an issue to reuse them... Although maybe I should repack with more grease? Not sure what type of grease Porsche uses though. Thanks! S.
  5. Hi all, I'm in the middle of getting the PSS9's on and I just realized I need to reuse the strut bearing plate (the plastic/rubber sandwich with the ball bearings in it)! I got a new mounting plate but not a new bearing plate. In all the articles I read before starting I never saw mention of people replacing that part with new... Anyway, is it generally considered normal to reuse it? Being a Sunday it will be impossible to source that part today... Thanks all! S.
  6. Hi TJ, Good suggestions. I did not include it, but the brakes and fluid are being changed this weekend too (Motul RBF600, pads are still undecided, but leaning towards EBC right now). I already have the stainless brake lines on there. I'll definitely look at the new radiator fill cap. Not sure I have enough time to get the 3rd radiator and larger oil cooler on there for this trip, but I will take a look at it. Any suggestions on the best geometry specs? I have a Porsche specialist doing the actual corner balancing and alignment, but I'd like to compare what they suggest versus the general consensus here. Thanks! S.
  7. Hi all, After tracking everything else I've got, I'm finally taking the Porsche ('99 Boxster) to the track (Laguna Seca)! Until now it's just been my daily driver, but I've decided to make it a little more track focused. This weekend I'm changing the steering wheel (smaller diameter, three-spoke), fitting a B&M short shifter with EVO ShiftLink, getting new Falken 615K tires (I get them through a sponsor, so extremely well priced, although I know not the absolute best when they heat up), and most of all, installing new PSS9's. My questions are around the PSS9's... I've looked around the forum for some posts on this, but nothing definitive.. Basically the questions I have are: 1) What else should I install this weekend, considering the car is 15 years old? I'm thinking strut top plates... Anything else? 2) To get it properly aligned and corner balanced, will I need the adustable drop links and adjustable rear toe links? 3) Anything else to do? I don't want to spend thousands on adjustable control arms, etc, right now though.. The car is going to be dual-purpose (daily driven, spirited mountain, and occassional track - mainly Laguna Seca, Thunderhill, Streets of Willow, Sonoma Raceway and Buttonwillow. Thanks in advance for help/advice! S.
  8. Ahh, I was afraid of that.. no worries then (unless someone just happens to know!) Thanks guys! S.
  9. Hi JFP, I don't have the manual to hand right now, unless I can buy an electronic version somewhere? Thanks! S.
  10. Hi all, Does anyone have a wiring diagram or list of what the wires going through the front firewall on the *drivers* side are? Model: Boxster Year: 1999 Thanks in advance for the help! S.
  11. Hi all, The issue is fixed! It was the bellows, which was badly deteriorated (see below). It ripped up more as I removed it, but it was really gone. I ended up just replacing the entire AOS which came with a new bellow (took about an hour, so wasn't too bad). All issues are resolved, no more codes (after 50 miles driving), and almost all the OBD2 monitors have been set now (just waiting for EVAP and Catalyst to complete). Thanks all for the help, especially to Ahsai, who hit the nail on the head! Thanks! S.
  12. A-ha! The more I read about that, the more I think that's it... I will replace it all this week. Thanks Ahsai! S.
  13. Hi all, Unfortunately I don't get to work on the car often enough (long time between updates!). I finally built a proper smoke machine and was able to smoke the engine out. I can see a lot of smoke coming out near the bottom of the AOS, but can't see anything specific it's coming out of. Note that there has not been any oil smoke out the exhaust, the pressure in the crankcase is extremely low (almost non-existent), and there is barely any oil in the upper AOS-to-throttle-body pipe - which is why I had dismissed the AOS as the issue. However, now I'm thinking maybe a seal around the AOS has failed? Is there a seal around here that commonly fails and causes all pressure to disappear in the crankcase? I can replace the AOS, but it would be very frustrating to replace the AOS then find that it really isn't that... Thanks for the help, guys! S.
  14. Hi Loren, Thanks for replying! I just found it today - it got stuck to a magetic screwdriver and I didn't notice! Thanks anyway though! S.
  15. Hi all, I was working on the engine so removed the clip for the clamshell so I could move it out of the way. On re-assembly I appear to have lost one of the clips on one side! Does anyone know if this is a standard size I could get locally, or if I have to some how order this through Porsche? Here's an image of it I found on the Pelican Parts website (yellow arrow): Thanks! S.
  16. Hi all, Finally got some time to work on this! Okay, so here's what I've tried so far: 1) used an in/H2O gauge and it barely registered 1". 2) I took the middle pipe off the oil filler then blocked the plastic pipe going in to the engine (the final part of the filler pipe). Didn't change anything. Still hear the loud-ish hissing, idle still rough. 3) I took the throttle body off and the "T" section linking the intake plenums. There is a fair amount of oil coating the inside in there, although not enough to cause any black/blue smoke at all. 4) I've noticed that everything is covered on the outside with gunk that looks like oil has been building up for a while - on top of the engine, on top of the throttle body, T-piece, etc. I plan on taking off that final oil filler pipe to see if it's cracked or something. Is that common? Most people I see talk about the middle section (where the accordion bit is). The final piece before the engine seems like solid plastic. Any other ideas? Help is appreciated! Thanks! S.
  17. Guys, you were right - the gauge was in in/Hg. However: 1) Taking the oil cap off doesn't affect idle at all 2) I believe I can hear a hissing sound from the top of the engine (don't have another Boxster to compare with, but the more I listen to it, the more I think it's not normal 3) Taking the oil cap off seems to change the pitch of the hissing sound very slightly, but not the idle I think it still points to a leak in the crankcase vacuum system, but I'll do an in/H2O test today with a manometer if I can. Thanks! S.
  18. Thanks JFP! I measured vacuum at the oil cap and I'm getting close to zero (I know the gauge works fine since I get 19 inches on the intake side), making me believe there is a leak in the crank vacuum, probably in the oil filler pipe under the intake plenum/T-pipe. I'm going to take apart the throttle assembly/T-pipe and see what can be seen.. Need to clean the throttle any way! Thanks! S.
  19. Just did a vacuum test on the intake side (pulled off aos pipe and tested there). Strong vacuum (19 inches) and idle seemed to get much better. Tried to see if the filler pipe was cracked, but doesn't look like it.. at least inside the bay. Thanks! S.
  20. Hi all, Just an update.. I think it's crankcase vacuum related. When I remove the oil cap there is no noticeable change in idle, and today I got a vacuum tester on it - the needle didn't even move no matter what I did! I'm thinking maybe a cracked oil filler pipe, or possibly a failing AOS. Any other way to categorically determine if it's the AOS? There is no blue smoke and there isn't any excessive oil in the intake-to-AOS pipe. Thanks! S.
  21. Thanks JFP. As mentioned I did do a smoke test and didn't see any leaks. I haven't checked the fuel system yet tho. I also haven't cleaned out the injectors in a while, so that could be part of the issue. I did notice some oil build up on the top of the intake (where the left/right banks and throttle body meet), as well as on the oil filler pipe inside the engine compartment. I don't have another Boxster to compare to tho. The oil build up is gunky - not wet. Thanks! S.
  22. Hi all, So I'm getting the common P1124 and P1126 codes, which pop up about 30-40miles after clearing them. This means the car never gets to emissions readiness either. Idle is a little lumpy, and I've noticed a very slight amount of hesitation at wide open throttle. There is no smoke out the back either. Here's what I have done to try to diagnose this: 1) visual inspection for cracks/pipe issues 2) pulled off oil cap while running. Barely any change in idle and no excess vacuum (so it doesn't appear to be AOS issues). 3) checked the pipe from AOS to intake - no excessive oil so again doesn't appear like an AOS issue. 4) smoked the engine but no leaks appeared. 5) pulled the AOS intake pipe and tried starting. Startup immediately became difficult. With the pipe on startup is never a problem so it seems to confirm the no leak diagnosis. 6) as far as I can tell no cracks in the oil filler pipe. However, I can't be sure as removing the oil cap should have made more of a difference. 7) pulled MAF connector - didn't really change the idle. Right now I'm thinking maybe a crack I can't see in oil filler or the MAF. I have changed the MAF before about 5 years ago so maybe it's gone again. Would have expected more codes though! Any other ideas on how to diagnose this guys? Any suggestions appreciated! Thanks! Shash
  23. Hi all, I'm toying with the idea of an M97 engine swap right now, but wanted to know if anyone had some answers to these questions: 1) Are the mounting points on the M97 in the same place as the M96? 2) Presumably the exhaust ports on the engine are going to be flipped around compared to the 911 fitment so the manifolds cannot be used? 3) Will the M97 engine fit (without modification) to the transmission bell housing, or will that need an adapter? 4) Any other mechanical fitment pitfalls? Thanks in advance for any help! S.
  24. I spoke with the Porsche dealer here and they said they've "never seen this issue"... Although I've seen a few posts now with people having this issue on the internet - although they all seem to be older Boxsters, so it wouldn't surprise me if the dealers never see it (since people are unlikely to go to a dealer to have this fixed!). Anyway, anyone happen to have a stock manifold for a 99 Boxster (or equivalent) that they don't want (preferably in the California Bay Area)? :) Thanks! Shash
