  1. Ok so rear jack stands, wheels off, front wheels chocked.

I worry about the car slipping forward if I raise the back  too high.  Maybe thats unwarranted fear with good jack stands.

How high are most people comfortable getting the rear end up without putting front jack stands to level it out?

Also as this is an 02' it doesn't have spark plug tubes, but there are seals.  Are these necessary to replace or just if I find oil on some of the plugs?

    Thanks guys!

  2. Hi everyone.

I have an 02 996 C4 cabriolet with relatively low mileage, 100,000 km.

It has never had its spark plugs done.  There are no issues with the car, but it sounds like it might be a good idea.

I have read all sorts of threads on this.

Some people say it is so easy and they can do it in like an hour without removing anything from the car.

Others say its really difficult and they take off the mufflers, bumpers, etc just to get access.

I am not someone that has done a lot of work on cars, and I don't have all sorts of ratchets, etc to work in cramped corners so I think I'd rather do it the second way.

What is best access then to do spark plugs in terms of hoisting up the car.

Currently I have two jacks, two jackstands and two rhino ramps.

I worry that if  I use the rhino ramps then if I get access issues I won't be able to remove the rear wheels.

    Thanks for any help!

  3. I posted this on Pelican Parts because I thought Wayne Dempsey may see it there, but didn't get much response...

    Hi Guys

    My 2002 996 C4 needs a new starter...
I have Wayne Dempsey awesome book 101 Projects for Your Porsche 911.
Project 85 seems easy enough -- at least from the descriptions and pictures. But it is listed as Expert Level - 5 wrenches.

Now I have very basic skills and tools... I was easily able to change mufflers, and do a window regulator. But I certainly wouldn't do an IMS (another 5 wrench project)..

So am I missing something here .. How hard is this project really?

    Thanks
  4. So have to remove the steering wheel, etc. Are there any photos of this, where the screws are etc.

    Thanks

    MM

During our various projects on cars we take dash and trim pieces off. I have found extra hardware, like nuts and bolts, floating around.

If the noise is where the stalks are then you would remove stuff to get to the cover, and just remove the top of the cover. There are connectors under the cover. In the old days Porsche covered the connectors in foam so they would not rattle against the plastic cover.

Then around 2000 Porsche stopped using foam on the connectors. Instead the bottom cover came with intergrated connector holders. The bottom of the cover has slots that the connectors (and wires) slide into to prevent rattles.

I would check to see if the connectors are seated in the holders and that is not the cause of the noise.

The picture is a 1999 Boxster and you can see the foam tape used on a connector to prevent rattles.

  5. I have an 02 C4 Cabriolet.

Recently I have noticed a rattling in the steering column.

It sounds like there is a loose screw moving around inside. It

sounds like it is coming from the section that the wiper and on board

    computer 'arms' comes out of.

When I accelerate or slow down something rattles around inside.

Is this a known issue or has anyone ever heard of this problem?

How hard is it to disassemble this part of the car to see

    what is rattling around?

    THanks

    Mike

  6. So my 02 996 was consuming oil and I was getting 'oil failure indicator' lights at a regular basis.

My dealer took the vehicle and drove it for a week, confirmed oil consumption, confirmed the oil failure indicator lights. Initially they felt I needed a new engine, but Porsche wanted them to put in a a new oil separator.

The new oil separator SEEMED to have solved the problem. I had very little oil consumption and no oil failure indicator lights for about 1 month.

However in last few days oil consumption has increased and I am again getting 'oil failure indicator' light coming on at random times.

Any ideas?!?! my car out of service date is one month.

    Also, two other problems

    1) My vehicle would 'kick' out of 2nd gear sometimes. I bought a B&M sport shifter and had my dealer install it. This SEEMED to solve this problem for a couple months. But now noticing it will kick out of 2nd. Anyone else have this problem??

    2) I am now on my THIRD battery. The original porsche battery became a dead cell after 3 years. I put in a NAPA battery, and this lasted 7 months before going completely dead as well. My dealer just put in a OEM porsche battery to replace this. Is this a symptom of something? The NAPA battery is actually a very good battery so that shouldn't have happened.

    Thanks for any input

  7. I have an 02 996 cabriolet.

I noticed a spring had fallen off from under the seat the other day. It is the long spring that runs along the left side of the drivers seat. The spring is about 1 foot long, has hooks on both ends, and has a 3 inch rubber sleeve on one end over the spring.

I tried to figure out where this hooks to, but couldn't.

The passenger side is different so I can't use it to compare.

Does someone have diagrams as to how to replace this spring. Do I have to remove the seat or anything?

    Thanks

  8. I have had bad experience with this product. I installed it, and within 2 weeks my top stopped working. Had to have the control box replaced (what the remotekey plugged into). Wilhelmy claims it is not there product.. Coincidence?

Then to boot they would not refund my money but offered to send a new one, but only after I returned the old one to them.

Not impressed at all. Wish I never would have bought it.

If you want one, I will sell you mine for discount.

  9. Ok, so after evaluating my car for a week they have concluded the problem was the oil separator. They have changed the oil separator and say the problem is fixed.

My question is, can anyone explain to me how changing the oil separator would stop my car from using 1 liter of oil every 500 km, plus stop the oil failure indicator light going on even when oil levels are ok???

I really beleive there is more of a problem.

Only two more months on warranty.. Stall tactics??

    Thanks

    MM

  10. If you want to support your case, take it back to the dealer everytime it needs oil. If you're topping it off they dont have any accurate measure of how much its burning.

Yes I am doing that. Unfortunately I get oil failure indicator lights coming on at random times as well so I feel it necessary to add a little oil just in case so I don't ruin the engine.

Hopefully they will resolve the problem soon one way or another.
