  1. The rev limiter of the 986 S should cut in at 7200rpm according to the manual. I've had my engine up to an indicated 7600rpm without any sign of the rev limiter cutting in. Does this indicate an ECU problem or my rev counter is wrong? Any ideas?
  2. I had the same problem. The glass developed a small play vertically and horizontally which I only realised when I compared it with the window on the other side. I had to replace the window frame part# 996 542 075 04 around 150 euro
  3. Replace your MAF,or if you don't want to spend the $$$ try cleaning it. If you leave it, eventually your car will start performing strangely and you will also get a MAF specific code (e.g. P0102).
  4. I would like to have the part number for the water pump and relevant gasket for MY 2001 3.2lt 986S. Thank you very much.
  5. My 2001 986 S runs very well with the exception of an idling problem. When the car is left to idle at operating temperature, after some 10-15 seconds the idling becomes uneven. However, the engine never tends to die down. When the the A/C is on idling is more stable. I changed the MAF sometime ago and the situation has improved but it is not perfect. The car has an ECU upgrade plus headers and muffler from Techart but the problem started some time after I had tose fitted. Any ideas and suggestions about the possible causes and areas I should look? Another point is the rattling noise from the drivetrain when idling warm which is eliminated when the clutch is depressed. I've read a post about what causes it but I don't remember. Can someone remind me please. I think this doesn't indicate a fault (it is just a nuisance) or am I wrong? Thanks
  6. I have the Porsche one and it is excellent! Go for the original, but if you find it expensive get the B&M that is identical (in looks at least,I don't know about materials).
  7. It was an optional extra on the 3.6 996 C2 (option code M220, I think). It was standard only on the "40 years anniversary" model.
  8. What is the up to date part # for the special tool for installing the 997 101 212 00 seal ( I believe this is the latest)in a 986 S MY 2001? Thanks
  9. Given that the basic shape couldn't be changed, in my opinion the facelift succeds in freshening up the car. Also Direct Injection engines (more powerful+better economy) and active anti-roll bars.
  10. A filter without an ECU update has no significant result. The motronic has to be rewritten to allow for the extra air. Otherwise it is only noise that gives an illusion of speed. As regards over oiling, I use a spray can to oil my BMC filter that controls the amount of oil more accurately than the more frequently used plastic container. Whatever the case let the oiled filter to dry up for a few hours before installing. Also Porsche MAFs are generally not very durable. The technician at the OPC, keeps changing them even on cars with the stock filters.
  11. I am planning to change my 986 S for a 997 Carrera. The AWD (Carrera 4) model: Is it worth the extra money over the 2WD model? Does it deduct from dry handling and driving pleasure at all? Is it in real practical terms any safer in the aspect of wet handling and especially aquaplaning on wet roads, particularly highways at speed. The car will be driven in mixed conditions, 8-9 months are dry and 3-4 partly wet. I have heard that the rear of the 997 is so sorted that the front of the 2WD model feels overlight. Something that is rectified on the 4WD model. Your opinions and experiences will be very welcome either on the 997 or even the 996. You see before I take this leap I want to be as sure as possible. Thanks
  12. I intend to change the gearbox oil on my 986 S. Do I have to remove any suspension parts for access, necessitating rear suspension alignment? Thanks
  13. Calipers also are different front and rear
  14. I replaced mine at 70,000km. According to the Porsche Manual they should be replaced at 1mm wear on each side of the rotor (2mm overall)front and rear. I know of many people who keep them past this state for much longer without any dramatic effects on normal road braking. I guess, looking after the state of the brakes more meticulously is part of the ownership of a premium car, especially if you use a big part of its performance often.
  15. My 2001 S sometimes idles somewhat erratically recently. This happens after it idles for some 15-20 seconds at which point revs start varying between 600-800 instead of the normal 700. If I rev the engine up correct idling is restored and then it gets erratic again. I noticed that idling is better with the a/c on. However, the engine is never in danger of dying. I haven't noticed any other adverse performance characteristics. Also no CEL or codes. The MAF was replaced 2000-3000 km ago. The car has had intake, headers, exhaust as well as ECU upgrades by Techart for over a year now without any problems. Any ideas about possible causes? Thanks
  16. They have patented a 7 speed DSG. But the Porsche Development Chief was quoted as saying that they "will introduce it when they cannot further develop The Tiptronic". So they are not giving away anything at this stage or they are saying that they are not ready. Besides, the VW DSG techonology only works with transverse engines for the time being, so there is no fully developed and proven DSG system for longidutinal engines yet. Knowing Porsches extensive testing philosophy, I guess PDK must be some years away
  17. I understand that to extract the quantity of fluid in the ABS/TC or PSM system you need to use the Porsche diagnostic tool which means a visit to the dealer. How large is this quantity compared to the total fluid in the entire system? If it is not extracted is there a real downside in that braking performance and therefore safety may impaired? Thanks
  18. The analog speedo will be in Km/h on a German car. You can change over between mph and kph on the digital speedo by twisting a button.
  19. I need to change the fuel filter on my 986 S MY2001. Can you please inform me where it is located? Thanks and excuse my ignorance.
  20. The front crankshaft seal of my 986 S has been leaking for some time now. It is a small leak and because oil drips on the plastic undertay and is retained there, it is not a nuisance. However, I am thinking of changing it at the same time as the belt. It can be done with the engine installed. Any suggestions and tips would be appreciated. The Porsche workshop manual mentions a Porsche special tool. Is it absolutely necessary? Is the job very difficult without it? Thanks!
  21. I overfilled my 986 S by 0.35-0.40liters of oil. Is this so crucial so that I will have to take some out? Some people say that it is no problem on a Porsche. However, I know that other cars (Mercedes, VW) have warning stickers all over saying that overfilling can damage the catalysts. Your views please!
  22. My car (986 S) is e-gas and was manufactured in September/October 2000 as MY 2001. Which Air Mass Sensor is required? 996 606 124 00, 986 606 125 00 or 986 606 125 01. Also please clarify to me the issue of reprogramming the ECU if you change between versions of the Air Mass Sensor. Thank you!
