  1. I fill my 2000 996 Cab-4 up as far as I can but my gauge never hits full and Im only getting 220 miles before hitting the red "empty" light. Searches on this site reveal a couple of possible issues. Either I might need my gauge recalibrated or maybe there is an issue with an electric vapor solenoid in my tank's filler neck (but I cant find a fuse for it). Anybody else had this problem and fixed it any other way? Thanks!
  2. Since its almost time for new tires, I am going to go with much lower profile tires and see how much I can lower the car that way!
  3. I'd like to replace my stock sound system and add NAV too. Im seeing used porsche PCM's (DVD + NAV and no fiber optics) on auction sites for around $600. What would be wrong with going that direction? Is the sound quality crap? Are there issues with the stock PCMs? I have zero experience with this hardware. Any insights appreciated.

  5. That sounds really cool Izzy! Re: autoenginuity maybe it was a laptop issue, but that is why I loaded it on a different laptop and it still didnt work. I understand that autoenginuity is not in the laptop configuration business but this product was designed to run on one so you would expect at least some basic troubleshooting from them. In my case they didnt even try. They suggested that my OBDII port might be bad.. but the fact that my little $39 scanner works flawlessly proves that wrong. Personally, I think their cable went bad. But they denied that.
  6. I started with the autoengenuity tool. It is very similar to the durametric tool. Unfortunately it was too complicated. It was great for reading OBDII codes but it also returned a lot of other information that you have to be a real expert to interpret. Even after searching the web and looking for books, most of that stuff was incomprehensible. Then I contacted autoenginuity and asked them if they could recommend a source for interpreting and using all the info and they basically laughed. They told me that it was for "real" mechanics and if I did not understand it that they could not help. Nice guys. Their tool worked for awhile, then stopped. I loaded their software on a different laptop and it still did not work. I emailed them twice and got no reply. I called them and they asked me to send them the diagnostic log which I did. They did not call me back so I had to call them again. They said that they found nothing wrong in the log... that whatever the problem was it was basically my problem. End of story, case closed, goodbye. So I ended up with a $225 paperweight. I would encourage everyone here to avoid autoenginuity. I then went out and bought a $39 OBDII reader which works flawlessly. It reads the codes, which I can then look up the details on here. It clears the codes too. It may not clear airbag codes (I dont know), but I havent needed to clear any airbag codes so no problem.
  7. How big of a DIY job was that, k996c4s? Did you have to have a special spring compression tool? Im not sure Ive seen any pics on this DIY and wonder if this is something I could do myself with normal tools...

  9. Hi vette67, just have one question, if I did PPI with the Performance Auto Shop, and later on, the part that they inspected was broken. Are they responsible for it? will they fix it? I buy the car, because they did PPI and said it was all good. thanks I dont know. Did they guarantee anything? You were talking about getting an aftermarket warranty. If you do, then that will cover you (be sure to read the fine print). Im no expert on PPI's because I did not get one and I was very sorry afterwards... $2500 worth of unexpected repairs. That's why I will always get a PPI in future. Also, I did not buy a warranty. I have to learn everything the hard way!
  10. That's correct KevinMac. We are talking about airbox mods, not airbox replacement. The K&N filter is just as good as the BMC IMHO.

  12. Somebody on here might know exactly what your issue is based on their experience (like maybe water in your MAF sensor), but what if that CEL has nothing to do with your car wash? First thing I would do is get an OBDII/CAF code reader and find out exactly what the problem is. You can get those reader from $40-$200 USD. If you are going to do any DIY you need a code reader anyway.
  13. Thanks for the sanity check, philipj. Guess there are weasels everywhere. I was thinking that you guys have a lot more porsche shops and tuners out there so natural competition would keep prices more reasonable. Like have you read the post, its either on here or on rennlist, about the guys who got their PSS9s and I think even a spoiler installed at one of your "tuner warehouses"? It was dirt cheap. I guess this place does mostly rice-burners, but they were excited to get to work on the porsches and did a real good job. Im thinking they charged like $400. Im really going to have to look up that post again!
  14. Congrats Bill! Hope you like your rear-engine Cab4 vs your mid-engine boxster. The easiest sound-enhancement I know is to do an airbox mod. I got the Fabspeed Cold Air Intake for this. Its really only a mod to your existing airbox and replacing the tube to your throttle body. It takes about 30 minutes and makes a big difference in your engine sound. Plus (and this is disputed by some people) it will give you a little extra horsepower. I dont know what mods will void your warranty...
  15. Thats the same guy who quoted me $1100 to install PSS9s + align but no corner balance. He's been here (Atlanta) for a long time. Most of the time he has not had any competition except for the 2 local stealers and a handful of euro generalists. In the past 5 years or so there have been 2-3 speed shops that opened up in the Braselton / Road Atlanta area. They are charging top prices too (ie $1200 for an alternator replacement). Call me naive (wrong) and a tightwad (right) but the "porsche tax" to get anything done to your car in this town always drives me crazy. I wish I were in So. Cal. with all the speed shops there and the warehouse-style auto parts and service places (like a Costco but for autos) that will install PSS9s for $400, etc.

  17. I totally agree with you re: float and roll. Im not trying to hijack your thread, Im just disappointed to hear that the C4S doesnt solve the problem. I guess I should have known better since that ridiculous bumper-height law applies to all cars. So if Im not mistaken, all of our P-cars need to be lowered, even turbos. Options are the ROW030, X74, adjustable shocks like the bilsteins or lowering springs like the H&Rs. But the C4S does have better sways than the C2 or C4, so that's a positive anyway. FYI in the past I have found new PSS9s (this was before PSS10s came out) for around $1200 on the web.
  18. Vick, you are getting too much body roll in a C4S?? That sucks! I did some research for my 996 cab-4 sways a couple of years ago. If I remember correctly, I can put the H&R rear sway on without new links but the front is going to require new droplinks... regardless of whether I get a GT3 front sway or any other one. I actually bought the H&R rear sway and never put it on. Want to buy it? :D
  19. I like my Fabspeed CAI. You might want to do a Short Shift kit too. Im looking at the RSS Plenum now. I hate the $1000 price new but would definitely go for a used one. The cats are not going to give you much unless you include a highflow manifold and mufflers to go with it. Unless you do all that work yourself, IMHO the bang for your buck would be too small. I agree with viper about the chip.
  20. Grazy, why would you put PSS9's on a C4S when that car is supposed to be already lowered and has a beefed up suspension? Im asking because I have a 996 Cab-4 and have been considering PSS9's + GT3 sways + performance exhaust but kind of decided that it would be smarter to just get a 997 C4S instead. If you are looking at PSS9s because they are height-adjustable remember that anytime you adjust the height you will have to get your front-end realigned (and corner-balanced in the case of having adjustable shocks). But again, I thought the C4S was already lowered. If you are looking at PSS9's because they are stiffness-adjustable then Im disappointed because I thought the C4S, with its suspension just like the turbo, did not have a problem with body-roll. I see a different post here asking about upgrading sway bars on their C4S... again making me wonder if the C4S/Turbo suspension allows too much body-roll. It would be great to hear from other 997 C4S drivers about these questions!

  22. Izzy +1. Its actually not a bad question. Because of the power curve in most of our cars, we usually dont get the kind of instant acceleration I live for until 4500+ RPM. If I am weaving thru traffic (ok, that sounds kind of bad but what the heck, sometimes you gotta drive it like you stole it right?) I will cruise at 4000 for the instant acceleration. When I first got my p-car I babied it too much. I was shifting at 3500 RPM. IMHO you just have to get used to the engine noise at higher RPMs and then you dont hesitate to rev it right up there all the time. I remember the first time I hit the rev limiter (Road Atlanta track day) I thought I had broken something. Now its not such a big deal. I take good care of my car and never neglect its maintenance, but I think the harder I drive my engine the better it performs. Werent these cars designed to be driven? Izzy, thanks for the book tip. I checked on Amazon and its not out yet but I put it in my wish list.
  23. My new Lloyd mats just arrived and they are awesome. Just like OEM mats but I got "Carerra 4" instead of just "Carerra" And I was real happy to see that these mats DO come with hooks to attach them to your seat brackets! Total cost: $100 Ordered thru www.usspeedonline.com
  24. How did you determine that you need new tubes /o-rings? Compression test? Porsche diagnostic scan?
