  1. Only those cars with memory seats have the full dipping mirror in reverse function. The smart top device only lowers the mirror , it doesnt put it back to its original position. The reason for this is the standard mirror only has 4 wires , the memory mirror has 6. My car originally had the wrong mirror fitted to the passenger side , so even with the memory function on the seat, the mirror would not return to the home position when driving forward or rotating the mirror select switch.

The Smart Top is called RemoteKey for the 987. I had the Smart Top on my 986 and came across RemoteKey before I bought my 987 as I wanted some way of one-touch hood without it stopping mid way if you went too slow. As far as dipping rear mirror for reverse is concerned, selecting reverse tilts the passenger mirror. Then according to their manual (www.wilhelmy-it.de):

"After leaving reverse gear, the mirror will return back up if one of these conditions is met: a) 10 sec. inactivity or B) forward speed of >5mph is detected."

But note that you have to go through a setup procedure first to calibrate the mirror positions.

    Cheers.

  2. I stumbled across an installation video on the web for applying a 3M protective film to a 987 bumper and thought it looked a good idea. Since then I have convinced myself to apply it to mine before it gets chipped. I know there are installers out there but I am very keen to try this myself, but typically I cannot find the vid now . Has anyone come across it? If so please please please send the link to the site to save me tearing out what little hair I have left :)

  3. So that is it for coverage in the Road and Track, just a picture on the front!?

Any other information on the web, pictures, specs etc?

This may be the one I start saving for! :D

I don't give the article any credibility. I was going to buy the mag then realised how misinformed they are about the Boxster.

"All that being said, there is no doubt the Boxster - which has been on the market with virtually the same clothes since 1997 (other than a minor freshening in 2005, in which Porsche reclassified the Boxster from its original 986 designation to the 987) is due for a redesign. We believe the new Boxster could be launched as early as 2009 for the 2010 model year. The car should see the first significant changes to its bodywork, though it will remain quite decidedly a Boxster throughout."

Well duh.. the 987 was a significant change to the 986 while retaining its appearance to the uninitiated. New body panels, roof, interior, engine, suspension, brakes, wider track are hardly minor freshening! Sounds like the author couldn't be bothered to do the research, so it makes me think their opinion is completely unreliable. BTW I think the "photo" is a computer generated graphic.

  4. I've been under the impression that 2005 was the first model year for the 987 series .. yet I see posts referring to earlier years with the 987 designation ... can anyone enlighten me ?? Thanks.

I was talking to a Porsche salesman recently who said that special 987 launch editions were introduced late 04 which were highly spec'd and all in arctic silver.

  5. A guide is not really necessary, it's a plug and play system. Take off the steering wheel and the cover under the steering column, fit the stalk in place with the two screws - fit the new cover and the steering wheel - program DME and GATEWAY.

The short cable is only for the early models (LHD). Your OPC can find all information's in PPN or TB

    Wow. This sounds too easy!!

So are you saying that the new stalk actually plugs into a socket in the steering column to make the plug and play connection?

    Thanks.

I contacted my local OPC who say they can supply the parts for around GBP150, but they have confirmed via Porsche HQ that they are unable to code the CC into the onboard computer. How absurd!! :cursing:

    Any ideas?

  6. I have a LHD boxster with this mirror tilt function , and as I found out , it requires additional wires in the mirror loom to function properly. On my 987 I have the electric memory seats with mirror position memory. If you don't have the extra wires in the mirror then i'm not sure the mirror can return to the original setting after the reverse gear is de selected and you start to drive forward. Also im not sure how you would set the lower position of the mirror since it has no memory. If you are only getting the relay mod for the dipping mirror function for a 987 I'd look a little deeper into what its actually going to give you for your $$$. The OEM unit gives you a memorised position for the reverse function, and it can be turned on or off as a function by the position of the mirror knob in the car. It also resets the mirror to the original drivers position after you get above 5mph in forward gear , or you move the mirror knob to a different setting. If this aftermarket kit can do some of this functionality then it sounds a good investment and it will save kerbing those nice alloys particularly as the 987 feels much wider track at the rear compared to the front.

I would get the mod primarily for the single touch hood operation, even when stationary. The mirror tilt and other funtions are a bonus.

    The controller is on

    https://www.wilhelmy-it.de/sms/shop/index.p...&jump=rk997

    According to the installation manual

    https://www.wilhelmy-it.de/sms/db/smarttop/.../en.php?mode=1)

the door mirror wiring passes through the contoller. The mirror position has to be moved to the tilt position and then back to the normal position in 2 stages as part of the calibration cycle.

Let me know what you think.

    Cheers.

  7. FYI: on the 987, the top is automatic above 6 mph upto 30 mph. let me know how the mirror tilt mod works out. i'd love to have that feature...will it void the warranty?

as for the honking and 30 sec. illumination, thats in the 987 as well. if you get the PCM, those features are adjustable, too. Lastly, now that you know exactly what you want in your 987, why not just order the car?

    cheers

    Hi Toejam

I didn't realise the top was automatic above 6mph. I will check this out. Thanks. As for ordering a car with everything I want, I am looking for a 2005 Boxster from a dealer, and finding the required options is very difficult. Cruise control is very important to me, but rare, and PCM is even harder to find with CC.

How difficult is it to remove the steering wheel and what happens to the air bag?

  10. 986

I installed a modified relay which allows single-touch operation of the hood (up to 19mph) to my 986. This was a simple replacement of a relay (Oh yes, I had the hood changed to a glass window at BAS International as well to get over the Boxster chop). This totally enhanced my Boxster experience.

    987

I am about to change to a 987, and have driven quite a few, now. Although the 987 allows the hood to be operated at up to 30mph, I found it very unsafe to operate even at low speed or traffic lights because (i) you are concentrating on keeping your finger on the button, and (ii) it was all to easy for the finger to slip from the switch, which was very distracting.

I have seen a mod for the 987 which is a bit more involved than a simple plug in relay, but it does allows the hood to be operated with a single-touch. It also adds other functions such as (i) automatically tilting the passenger side door mirror to view the kirb when reverse gear is selected, (ii) headlight illumination of the driveway for 30 seconds by pressing the key fob and (iii) a single or double beep from the horn when you lock / unlock the car. All these functions are programmable.

I will be undertaking this mod as soon as I find the right 987, but I wondered if anyone had any experience of it?

  11. Hi

There are no problems for European 987 and 997 to retrofit cruise control. All you need are: 1 stalk, 1 cover ( under ) steering column, 1 short electric cable ( only for the very first models ) and 2 screws for the fixation of the stalk.

Programming with PIWIS tester is needed, max. labour time 0 h 30. Piece of cake.

    Thank. I am looking for a 2005 987.

Do you know if there is a step-by-step guide / Technical bulletin available for this?

My local UK OPC says it cant be done. I just want to be sure of what is involved (ie where to make connections etc) before tackling the project.

You mention the short electric cable for early models, where does the connect, and what about later models?

    Thanks.

  12. Anyone know if it is possible to retrofit CC to a 987. I am changing from a 986 to a 987 and am having difficulty finding one with CC.

My local OPC says it is not possible, but I have seen the mod for the 986, so I thought it must be possible for a 987, especially as it is an optional extra from new. Part list required would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance, Brian.
