  1. Okay I know this has been covered a million times. I searched and read quite a few topics. And I know it's common for Boxsters, but I need just a little input. 2002 Boxster, tiptronic, 116k miles. For quite a while now (since I got the car 2 years ago), every couple weeks or so on a random startup I would get a decent sized cloud of white smoke out of the back. As soon as I drove off, no problem. I know there's oil that drains and it gets burned off on startup. However, in the last couple weeks I've noticed the cloud of smoke is a lot more frequent. But it's not usually during the day, just on a cold startup (the car has sit for several hours). It's just about every other day. It's been about 6000 miles since my last oil change. I did the AOS check by seeing if I left the car idling and removed the oil filler cap whether it was hard to remove. It was not, the car just kind of made a grumpy noise because it lost vacuum. I have absolutely no performance problems that I can see or feel, and the smoke is always only on startup, not while the car is running. Should I have my AOS changed anyway? Is there any other tests I should do? Should I just continue to drive it as is until I notice a performance problem or something more severe? Is it possible I just need some fresh oil and a new filter? Thanks!
  2. Hey thanks a lot man that helps big time. I'm going to check the relays this weekend and then consider checking the transistors. I don't want to sound stupid, but before I do that, I understand that when the car is running hot the fans should kick on. Where exactly can I feel if they are actually on? I read to put my hand under the bumper. I know where they're located, which makes this seem like a dumb question. Maybe I'm missing it but it feels like neither are on. I have the car in park, does it need to be in neutral or should I have a second person be outside the car while my foot is on the brake? Is it suppose to be as loud a when they come on from the A/C? I just struggle to believe I have two radiator fans not running and the car is only a few degrees hot.
  3. Haha thanks. I know I'm still in the safe zone but it irks me that the temperature isn't hovering right at 180 like it used to before my first water pump failed. I'll do some further searching.
  4. Okay, so I have a 2002 2.7 tiptronic. For a while now I've had issues with my car overheating. It'll sit around 180-185 degrees. The car only really heats up when I sit still though. In really heavy traffic I've gotten up to 190, but only once. I've replaced the water pump and thermostat and cleaned the radiators of all dirt and debris. Does anyone have recommendations of where I should go next? I'm considering the possibility that one of my radiator fans might not be running perhaps? Now if I turn the A/C on both fans work fine, but I'm not sure if they're coming on when I'm driving, and without the A/C running. Thanks.
  5. Not really sure at what speed they come on. I just know if I turn the A/C on I can feel them sucking in air. Thanks for the two links guys. I'll go ahead and clean the radiators out and then switch the relay for the fan and then go from there. I appreciate the help!
  6. Not particularly, is there an easy way to do so? Cause I wouldn't doubt it.
  7. Well the main reason this has come to my attention is that when I sit still or get stuck in stop and go traffic the temperature starts to climb higher than usual. It's not a drastic climb, but 5 or 10 (maybe 15) degrees more than it used to. The water pump was recently replaced and coolant levels are as they should be (I'm not losing any). When the car is actually in motion the temperature goes back down. So I'm looking at a faulty fan possibility. The two in the front are fine and I've heard my fan on in the past, so that's why I believe it is the culprit. Is there any other fans or possibilities I should know about?
  8. Okay, so I have a 2002 2.7L tiptronic with 107k miles on it. My main question is, the fan inside the engine compartment seems to have quit running. I'm unable to really tell for sure whether my relay just burned out or the fan has gone bad. When the fan is suppose to come on, I checked to see if it was getting power to it, but there was no current going to it. However, I really don't have the tools to properly test either the relay or the fan properly. I believe I'm just going to switch the relay, but I'm not entirely certain which one actually is connected to the fan. Can anyone shed any light on the best approach to my problem or which fuse is the one I need to replace/test? Thanks.
  9. Turned out better than I thought, the tensioner pully and two idler pullies are going bad. Does anyone know a good source for getting the three parts or whether it's better to go OEM or otherwise?
  10. Tomorrow I'm heading down to my mechanic. That's probably what I'll have him do unless he has any other thoughts. I used to get a loud noise on startup when I turned, as if the power steering fluid was low. I can't say I'm overly car savvy but I heard there's a relation between these and my differential. So I'm really hoping it's a fluid issue considering it's been a while since its last maintenance.
  11. I've done a lot of searching across as many sites as I can find but I don't seem to see anything that addresses my issue. I have an 02, automatic, 2.7L, 107k miles. I've had the car for about 2 years now and taken relatively good care of it. However, recently I've noticed a particularly alarming low pitch whining noise when I accelerate, from 1st gear to 3rd, once I hit 4th gear it's not as prominent (or not there at all from what I can tell). The noise is noticeably worse in the cold, and seems to lessen slightly when the car warms up. I'm about 90% certain it's something relating to my transmission, because I feel it jolts the car when it shifts occasionally, but it's not a particularly bad jolt, just seems a little off compared to the usual. I will most likely take it to my mechanic when I have time, but he doesn't specialize in Porsche by any means so I like to go in with a few educated guesses on what it could be. I'm thinking it might be related to either the gear oil or transmission fluid needing to be changed, but if anyone has any other help it would be greatly appreciated.
