  1. This is a bit embarrasing for me, but is there a graceful way to exit a Carrera coupe without looking like the old coot that I am? I'm 63, 6' 1" tall, reasonably fit, but my knees are shot! And because of my vanity, I refuse to swing both legs out simultaneously in the attempt to achieve a standing position. The main problem is that my knees don't quite bend like they used to. Oh, and keep this among yourselves. . .

Squire a really young, gorgeous honey, and let her get out first, very... slowly :>)

  2. The following is a DIY Muffler Install for the 997. Very similar to the 996, but details might not be obvious or posted. Here I will key off what is known already about the 996, and will assume reasonable shade tree mechanic ability.

First, I refer to the fine threads:

Removal of the rear bumper cover and muffler:

    http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=16935

996 sport exhaust and bypass pipe install:

    http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...p=6entry6

Here are some items to consider and watch out for:

    1) Find a safe stable way to jack up the car with fail-safe in case of jack failure.

    2) Remove rear wheels - it is alot easier to remove and install the mufflers with them off

    3) Remove rear bumper cover - Remove rear tail lights to access a lone hidden torx screw and see 1 torx in wheel well, in addition to the other obvious screws under the engine lid and under the car - it is alot easier to remove and install the mufflers with the cover off

    4) Remove heat shields to access the mufflers - see my pics below, the fasteners are very obvious

    5) To remove and re-install new mufflers, follow the above threads......

    6) I used WD-40 soak on muffler fasteners prior to removal and fused aluminum anti-seize compond to lube up muffler joints for install.

    7) I found that a ratchet with a pivoting head and just the socket was more useful and easier than a ratchet a universal joint and extension and socket.

Here are some pictures which may help:

Nice article Josh. What did you install PSE?

  3. also one more question, I was reading the tsb for update and it mentions if display show level b 05024xxx only the navigation module needs to be updated and this can be done using the multimedia cd.

so any idea if that would need to be done? as my dealor is around 80 miles from me and he is only sending the navigation dvd out. so that might not work it seems.

Larry T any idea what version is your navigation software as that can help me see if mine is same and than can just get the dvd from them.

    thanks for all your help.

I have the latest version, entire package. $300, with the little faux leather CD case.......

If you need the upgrade I can lend you those discs..If you can't find someone local to borrow from.

The latest Nav DVD disc I believe is 08.2007. or something like that, anything other than that is NOT the latest.

Is he charging you for the disc?

  4. I have been trying to follow this thread as am trying to update my dvd to 08.2007. I hav and the PCM software version shows 3.3e a 2006 911 and when i checked the dvd version it shows 04.2005 and the PCM software version shows 3.3. If i buy a new navigation disk any idea if it can just be loaded in ot the dvd or i would be in the same boat as applying the software updates?

    thanks.

At 3.3 you should be able to just put in 08.2007 map DVD no problem! It will ask to update, you choose yes!!

    thanks larrytrk

I just checked today as i said ealier the software version shows 3.3 so what does 3.3 signify?

also when I checked my pcm version it showd 0504 which is level B. I tried to read through the tsb also.

so you think all i have to do is just try and put int he dvd navigation disc and that should do the trick? or some update needs to take place from level B to C first?

    trying to understand this better.

06 can only get to 3.3 firmware , level B.

    07 on get C. I think.

New Nav Dvd should work! Insert in Nav. DVD drive and wait and see if it wants to upgrade or just works. Should be no problem.

    My 06 is 3.3 level B

  6. Hello all,

I need help for my Cayenne S 2004. I have PCM 2.1 (I think!) with separate NAV DVD. The original map was dated 8/2004, few days ago I put inside the DVD the map 10/2004. The PCM made an updating and all is working. My curent software is SW 1 (Standard Level 04035XXX). Now if I put inside de DVD the map 5/2005 doesn't work because PCM says Incopatible Map. I think I have to upgrade the software to Level A Model (x4202xxx) and then to Level B Model. I think I need a disk that I don't find and my dealer said is not posible to buy. Yesterday I put inside de front cd (PCM unit) one cd and now is blocked inside because it doesn't came out. I'm allready convinced that i've to open the PCM to take off the disk....Pease help to find the dsk I need...thank you very much.

Shut the car off. Lock it and unlock after 5 minutes. Turn on PCM and see if it automatically ejects the CD.

  7. I recently installed the Dension Gateway 500 in my 06 997 PCM (no multi-disc changer) and it's working fine but some reason it works on any dip switch setting even though I have it on the right one, is that normal? I went to the local Porsche dealer today so they could enable the cd changer hoping it would allow me to see the ipod information on the screen but it still just shows track 1, track 2, track 3, etc...

Also I don't see any Dension splash screens whatsoever... I've tried to goto config mode but it only allows track 1 to be enabled not 3 which is supposedly the one you need to turn on for text.... I don't see iPod GW, iPod UI, or Aux either, instead its CD 1, CD 2, CD 3... etc

Please help me if you have any insight i'm going brain dead here....

    Thanks so much!

Make sure there is no CD in the slot.

Flipping the on/off Dension switch 3 times should give the Config screen.

May have to be repeated many times.

Are you sure the i-pod is playing when you get the track numbers?

This should have nothing to do with the dealer programming the cd player if the i-pod is playing.

What software version do you have in the Dension?

    To many things to check.

    Remove and reconnect i-pod!

  8. I just bought a used PCM 2.1 and Navigation for my car. The PCM install within 5 mins and everything is working correctly. However, I'm having trouble with the navigation unit. I believe the 997 S and GT3 (mine) uses the vertical mount navigation and my part numbers below should be for this. I cannot find a space to fit the unit! Am I suppose to remove the plastic cover in the center of the trunk to place the DVD drive?

    Navigation drive 997.642.159.01

    Bracke 997.642.231.00

Some help would be great! Thanks!

997C4 and apparently your GT3 use a vertical mount in front of the bulkhead. The 997C2 & S use horizontal mount where you have the black hump.

  9. So if I do it how your're suggesting, do I need the vacuum lines, vacuum reservoir, etc. Sorry I just don't quite understand. My mufflers arrive tomorrow, so once I actually get them, it will make more sense. Thanks for the help.

Yes you need the vacuum lines and t's, you tap into the brake booster I believe, no additional reservoir, and all accessory vacuum piping to the solenoid.

instead of the large included electrical harness you only need several wires to fuse box-switch-solenoid and a ground. We used a few wires of the original harness and capped the rest.

  10. Unless they are damaged or rusted you can reuse the sleeves from your existing mufflers. Same with the hanger brackets. My PSE mufflers came with brackets so I just bolted them on - but since these came from eBay you will have to see if the muffler hanger brackets came with.

The dash switch is not included in that parts list. You will have to choose whether you wan the the one for the left side of the console or the right side

I suggest you wire a switch from the fuse box, to a switch, directly to the solenoid, bypassing the DME for full control. On/off at will.

    My switch is in ashtray.

  11. I just picked up an 07 GT3 as a second owner. The car is great, but there's a stupid rattle/tapping that sounds like it is coming from the front dash, under the chrono clock. It sound like a wire or plastic plug is tapping against something metal.

I've taken it to 2 dealers and none of them can find the problem and do not seem to be willing to take apart the dash (don't really blame them as it may cause more sounds when returned). I've taken out the cup holders, ashtray, AC vent, radio, and AC controls all to find nothing! I've searched and thought it was the AC vent as it seems like a few people had this before. I did find that the door lock switch does shake and rattle a little but this was not it as I've driven the car with the whole thing out.

Any ideas on what could be loose?

    Thanks!

pop out the chrono clock and check, directions have been posted here or rennlist or 6 speed.

  12. The Nav update kit is about $299 (minus your PCA %10) has about 4 DVD's 3 for various Cars and various PCM levels from base to C. and 1 08 Map DVD.

Sunset or your dealer can sell it to you. You can install yourself. The TSB tells you which disc's to use to get to level C.

After you install you are left with 3 useless Discs, 1 old Nav disc and a faux leather CD case. If you have nav your old disc may still work, mine did when we accidentally put in in instead of the 08 map disc. We then installed the updated 08 Nav DVD.

If all you want to do is get to level C on your PCM, you can use anyones used Discs, with or without Nav I suspect. PM me for additional info.

  13. I recently acquired a 2006 C4S and wanted to update the PCM and Nav to the latest software and nav maps, so I got the update from Suncoast and followed the TSB and it worked fine. Since it was an '06, it already had the 05025xxx Model Level B software (version 3.2), so I only need to update the Nav firmware and put in the new DVD map disk.

I had read that version 3.3 improves the telephone quality and MP3 playback which I'm most interested in getting, but the Suncoast update package does not include the Model Level C update to 3.3. I believe someone referred to it as 000 043 205 46 007. Is that correct and any idea how I can obtain this update without a visit to the dealer?

Any guidance from the experts here would be much appreciated.

See Navigation system update several Posts below!

  14. I just found this forum & it appears to have lots of good and useful information. I have an 06 997 C4S Cab and an 83 SC Targa and love them both. I've owned the SC for many years and have done most of the repairs / maintenance myself (brakes, alternator, A/C compressor, cam tensioner update, etc). So far, I've had no issues or maintenance items with my 997 but it is about due for an oil change -- I plan put the tips listed to good use!

I just received a mailer from my local dealer announcing the latest navigation system update (#997 044 901 51) for $299 plus installation.

    Questions for the forum:

Is there an alternate source for the DVD at a lower price?

Is this update a DIY project for a mechanically savvy but electrically challenged person like myself?

    Thanks in advance.

This is an easy do it yourself project. There is a tech bulletin here in DIY Section: part 32/07 9110 navigation update to walk you through. You need one of the extra CD's to upgrade PCM to Level C if you are not there already and you just pop in new Map DVD. PM me with questions.
