  1. I probably get 12-14 mpg normal driving (well...Normal fast around town). Gets great mileage the few times I go on the interstate and cruise at a steady speed. (Mine is Tiptronic)....

I usually leave Sport Chrono ON (- PASM).

  2. Your indicator displays psi. For sure.

    1 bar = 14.5 psi

    Regsrds

That's what I thought, so I don't have an answer as to why I can't get the 1 bar max boost and can't get it into overboost at all.

    thanks

Probably obvious, but wanted to make sure you knew to get the chrono to get overboost, you have to quickly push the accelerator all the way to the floor and you will see a small upward arrow to the right of the boost gauge. That is how you can tell the the overboost is enabled (for 10 seconds). Maybe already knew that, just making sure.

  3. Can someone indicate which EBC Red Stuff brake pads will fir the front wheels of my car?

I just received a set of DP31208C for the rear and a set of DP31514C for the front. The front pads didn't fit!

    My car details are:

    2001 (or 2002 . . . not sure now)

    Carrera 4S

    VIN WP0AA29942S623935

Otherwise, the specifications for Hawk Performance pads would also be welcome!

From your VIN....Your car is definitely a 2002 C4S 3.6 L Trans code: A96.35 Engine code: M96.03....18: turbo II look wheels and touring suspension, tiprtonic with cdr220 and cd changer, and draped (supple) leather.

Not sure on part numbers for those brands. PAGID Black part should be 99-5541-650-M473

    Hope that helps....

  4. Hi all,

I am very close to switch my very good 40th Anniversary 996 with a MY 997 Turbo Tip and i would appreciate some technical info.

How much boost should the display indicate at full throttle at 3k, 4k, 5k, 6k rpm???

I understand that boost pressure declines as the rpm rise, but what level of boost should I expect to see at 5k with SC on /off respectively???

I'm planning a test drive tomorrow, and I guess if correct boost levels can be achieved means that turbos/ intercoolers/ hoses/ DV are all in good order.

BTW I ve been told there is no comparison in straight line performance between my car and the Turbo. Does it really feel sooooooo much faster??

    Thanks in advance

Bone stock with no Sport Chrono on should get about .9 and with SC on about 1.2 bar on boost gauge. You can flash the DME through OBDII and get around 80 HP gain without other mods, but other mods help. Also the difference

between what you have and a 997 Turbo is not even close. If you were to race one straight line in your 996 or even 997, you would feel like you are in neutral :) With exhaust, intake, and dme flash....SCARY!

    Good luck.

  5. So I am driving along the road and I hear a very odd grinding noise. I pulled over and 2 of my spokes on my Kineses F110 wheel are cracked all the way through the spokes! I was amazed as I thought these were bullet proof strong wheels! So I have the car flat bedded away to a near by shop. The tire guy comes back to me and says that they have been welded up recently! I just bought these a month ago from a forum member online that told me they were "just re-painted because of some minor scratches." I am pretty pissed at this point for not only being f*cked over for buying welded up wheels but this could have killed myself or others on the road!!! Imagine if I was driving the car hard and it busted completely!

You can see the welds on the back side were the cracks are if you look closely. Come to find out these wheels were bought from a major wheel company online, welded up, painted over, and re-sold!

    photo59.jpg

You can see the spokes have been welded up and painted over:

Let me know what you guys think....

Wow! That sucks. And you have to be a jewel to sell someone some crap like that and lie about it. You should at the very least get a refund.....Should pay for the tow etc also. man...Some people are just A-holes. Glad it was not worse!

  6. Driving on the weekend (MY03 C4S Coupe) I picked up a huge metal spike in my rear passenger tire. Used a can of fix a flat and my compressor to get home. Once I took the tire off I could see that there was no way it could be repaired (large metal spike approx 8-10mm in diam). The tires have about 2000 miles on them Michelin Pilot Sport 2 N2's I had replaced all 4 tires at the same time. The problem I am having is finding a replacement tire for the one that is trashed. Pilot Sports are impossible to find right now. No online dealer has them I even called Michelin and they have none. I have tried Porsche dealers locally and they say that the Michelin's are on back order for the last few weeks and there is no set delivery date. So now I am facing replacing all 4 tires again so I can have a matched set. I have tried the usual online places for used tires but none available in my size 295/30/18.

If anyone has any tires or knows where I can get some I would appreciate the heads up. If I am going to switch out the rest of the tires anyone got a recommendation for another brand?

I had the same issue with my 997 Turbo last year. I ordered that tire from 4 places and then they all refunded and said on back order. I ended up finding the exact tire on eBay missing only 1/32 (exactly like my other rear tire)...Brought it to Discount Tire and had it mounted (they have excellent Goat machines for mounting with no damage).

    Good luck

  7. I bought a 2004 C4S Cabriolet a few weeks ago. Starting yesterday, it seems like sometimes when I get into the car and close the door the automatic window adjustment back up is happening a little too soon, and the window is fully up when it comes into contact with the roof. Is there something simple I am not paying attention to? For example, am I shutting the door too quickly, or too slowly? I haven't noticed the problem when I am shutting the door after I have gotten out of the car. Although the same thing may be happening, and I just can't tell from outside of the car.

There is a microswitch that causes the window to lower a little when you pull the handle and go back up when closed. Sounds like this may be going out on your car. There is a guide here on this site to DIY if you are handy.

Otherwise may need to take to repair shop. Part is only about $35.00. Maybe others have different ideas if that is not the issue.

    Good luck

  8. It is a moot point -since I bought the car- but how much do you pay for car insurance on your 911?

    Thanks for the info.

Very subjective. Most websites will give you online quotes. Price is based on age, driving record, class of vehicle, miles driven annually, how many cars you have, where you live etc....Go to one of the

major auto insurance sites like statefarm.com and you can get a quick quote based on the relevant variables.

    Good luck,

  9. Hi there,

I just bought a 2003 Targa and, I believe, the battery is on its last leg. I read here about replacing it with a cheaper alternative from Autozone. So my question is: do I have to do anything in addition to swapping the batteries out in order to prevent having to reset codes, alarms etc.

    Thanks for your time!

    Hi,

Yes...I found the OEM batteries to be pure junk. If they sit for a week sometimes they are dead....So aftermarket is fine. If you swap, you will lose all of your settings and need your radio code. You either need to keep the cables connected to a trickle charger or one that plugs into your cigarette lighter. Key is to keep 12 volts to your system so you do not lose settings. Beyond that, nothing different. If you have your radio code, no big deal....The DME will learn your driving habits again and adjust settings , you will have to set your clock and reset the radio code...No biggie.

    Good luck!

  10. Well, I am new to the Porsche community and am looking to pull the trigger on purchasing a 2000 996 carrera 4 with 25,000 miles. I had the car check out by a local shop and the only thing they saw was some oil seapage around the valve covers. However after reading all the problems with blown motors and such I am ready to cancel my purchase. I know every vehicle is prone to problems, but the IMS issue seems like a major one. Am i making a bad decision or is the problem small in comparison to the # of vehicles produced? Also I have been looking into an exteded warranty that will protect me; does anyone have suggestions as to a reputable warranty company. Thanks so much for any help

Oil seepage around the valve covers doesn't say much. That could be a lot of different things. It could be as easy as leaky spark plug tubes which is fairly common and not too difficult to fix. You'll have to get more detail.

what about, the more major issues like the ims failures and any advice on extended warranty companies?

On the warranty issue, do a search on this site as I recall it being discussed quite a bit. No need to repeat that discussion here.

On your concerns about the engine, I would suggest if the RMS is not weeping oil for 11 years, you are probably OK with that and the IMS. If it does, you simply need to get it replaced...Not the end of the world ...labor + parts usually less than $2500. Check the price for changing a head gasket on a GM...About the same. All engines are prone to having failures. IF this car has been solid for 11 years, not likely it will bow on the way home. These engines are built to be high performance and may have a few more issues that others that are not, but overall (unless you get a lemon) they are solid and trouble free.

    Good luck,

  11. Hi,

I need to remove the door panel as have a crunching noise when electric window goes up, what ever it is, it's causing the window to stop about 3 inches from the top.

I have printed off the instructions and diagram to remove the panel. What is unclear, is how to get to the bowden cable, to disconect it.

Step 2, says remove the plastic Airbag cover and allen screw behind it. I have done this along with the light fitting. Am i now supposed to lever out the leather clad Airbag panel which is approx 12x4 inches in size? I tried a little but was worried about breaking it or plastic clips that might hold it in place.

    Please help!

    Thanks in advance

  12. After a recent episode with a flat battery on an 04 986, I was pursuaded to use a portable battery booster through the cigarette lighter to allow me to pop the front bonnet.

During the boost phase the car alarm sounded and instictively i turned the ignition keys to silence it. Stupid, I know.

Long story short the car is now fine but dead CDR - it just doesnt power on at all. I've changed the fuses for radio & amp, plus the inline fuse to the rear of the head unit but no joy.

Just wondered if anyone had similar experiences / suggestions / knew of anyone who might attempt a diagnosis of the head unit ... ?

Failing that is there a cheap direct replacement unit anyone could suggest pls.?

    Thanks.

Sounds like you have checked all of the usual issues with your unit. If you have no luck with repair, try this link CLICK HERE. There are a variety of used OEM and others on this eBay search at various prices.

  13. The Vin on the body reads 9115400148

    the most I could fine was that it was a 1975 w/an original engine of 911/43, 165 hp @ 5800 rpm with only 395 produced....however the engine is a 3.0 S/N *6404085*

can anyone decode the engine VIN? Looking to possibly buy this car...but would like some info

    Thanks,

    Phil

  14. Sorry I was replying to the Rock88's post who does have a Turbo.. Sorry for the confusion..

Yeah...Thanks! I am just waiting until my lovely spouse says to do it :) Also, I realize the original post is a non-turbo. From what I have seen, while not quite as extreme, Softronic is still the way to go for a NA as well. Check Here .....And only $995. Bumps up the HP and torque and creates a more responsive map....

    3.6L Stock Power – 325HP and 273ft/lbs

    Tuned Power – 345HP and 295ft/lbs

    3.8L Stock Power – 355HP and 295ft/lbs

    Tuned Power – 389HP and 330ft/lbs

    Good luck!

And thanks for getting me all excited again phillipj :) I will have to be all nice to my wife now so she will "allow" me to purchase it....Since I just got her a whole kitchen full of new granite counter tops etc...Might have some leverage....

  15. Is there any consensus which ECU remap is the best option. I have a 2006 C4S witch a gather has 355 BHP. I've added AWE headers, cats and exhaust but no air box at this point. I want to do the ECU and am aware of the offerings from Softronic, Fabspeed, etc but would love some feedback from others. The aftermarket modification options for adding horsepower are similar to all the muscle powders marketed to teenagers who will pay through the nose for over priced protein powder. I guess what I'm saying is that I know better but am still easily marketed to and would appreciate some advise from others.

Everything I see and read points to Softronic. My wife is warming up to the idea, so as soon as I get my next bonus (and if she stays in a good mood :)) I will be getting the Softronic flash for my 997 Turbo. The people who have used this seem to really love the results. I also have two great dealerships and since I have several Porsches, have established a good relationship with the service departments. The mechanics have indicated the flash works great and does not harm anything (after warranty ends...of course). Not speaking officially on behalf of Porsche obviously.

    Good luck.

  17. DC,

Your GT3 looks terrific with these! My 2003 C2 does have the headlight washers and it would be necessary to remove the popout heads in order to install these cover trims. I wonder how difficult it is to remove these for installation. It is difficult to tell from the PET and the shop manual that I have on hand does not tell how to do this.

Yes, using these headlight cover trims would be an attempt to make the 996 look more like the 997 and they are probably overpriced at $170 + $50 shipping.. However, as much as I like my 996, I do feel tht the "fried egg" headlights are the least attractive feature of the 996. This is a personal distinction. Each to his/her own opinion on such matters.

Just curious, is there any knowledge or experience by anyone on this list concerning these painted 996 headlight cover trims offered on e-Bay at: http://cgi.ebay.com/...Q5fAccessories? They do change the forward appearance of the 996.

Thanks for any comments you may have.

Not sure about these particular ones, but have them on 2 996's and they look great. Use 2 sided 3M moulding tape instead of adhesive. I have verified that they hold beyond 150 MPH :)

Have photos on my GT3 on this site in Ocean Blue Metallic. Looks more like my 997 Turbo with these covers on...Click Here for some photos

    Good luck.

    DC

Not sure you will need to remove anything? They usually just stick right over the top with the headlights in place...>Do not even need to pop the headlights out. You just put the 3M tape all over the underside and line them up good and press down firmly...The stuff works great. Good luck.

  19. I recently experienced this shaking of my steering wheel. Here is what I noticed when its really cold the steering wheel does not shake at all or if it does its very little. On the day this week that is was 50-55 degrees in nj, the steering wheel was noticably shaky. So now it could just be happening no matter what the temp outside is but.. Where do I look to see what is worn or broke? Is the control arms? Its not the wheels as the rims were just balanced and are true. So anyone please give me their ideas.

It is odd to have a steering shake associated with temperature. I have a theory that is the only thing I can think of that may have a causal relationship between cold and steering performance....And it may be totally wrong, but.....

The only thing I could think of would be rubber bushings in the front end....When it is very cold, the rubber will be very hard and stiff...At warmer temperatures, the rubber would become more pliable and more likely to shake??

Only thing I could think of.

    Good luck.

  20. Anyone have any input on this. My 08 Cayenne S makes a thumping/jerking noise and feel when I am turning at low speeds. It happens when I'm leaving the driveway or a parking spot. Seems to happen only when turning and tight turning. Its also more noticeable when its cold.

Try the search feature on this site. This has been covered a number of times in the past.

  21. I would like to put a gasoline additive into my 2002 911/996 C2 , I know of several reputable types such as Lucas fuel additives and Chevron Techron, which do any of you recommend ? I know a lot of folks don't believe in them, and Porsche as far as I know never used to endorse them, but today at the Rolex 24 here in Daytona, at the "Porsche Corral" a guy mentioned to me that Porsche now has there own type of fuel

additive "Keropur"> http://www.porsche.c...e/fueladditive/ could this just be Techron in disguise ? And how about that "Lucas upper cylinder lubricant and injector cleaner" every mechanic I know says thats the best, any thoughts and recommendations unsure.gif

Might want to do a search on this site, as I recall this topic was covered in great detail not long ago. And in the end, you will only get lots of opinions to consider as there are lots of variables and thoughts.

In the previous post, I simply indicated that I have used SeaFoam (as my Porsche mechanic suggested. I used it in the gas and oil of my 997 Turbo, 996 Cabrio, 996 GT3, and Cayenne, and felt like it worked.

Again, there are lots of opinions about this stuff, and lots of facts, so maybe try to see if you can find the previous posts. Here is a link to one Click Here

    Good luck.
