  1. Thanks, Coils too ? where can you get them reasonably priced ? Pelican is tearing my @## up ! what are SAI ports??
  2. thanks guys. not asking for a primer in engine rebuilding, just want to know what others have done to head off the "yo dummy, why didnt you replace the (fill in the blank) when you were rebuilding and had the motor out ?" If my wife knew what I've spent on parts and machine work...she probably does ; )
  3. questions for my fellow engine rebuilders; heres what ive done so far.would like to get others input on other parts to replace as part of this large effort; new parts ; ln nickies je pistins rings rr rods new oil sprayers arp carrier bolts new bearing shells balance reciprocating assembly billet tensioner paddle for crank to ims shaft ims retrofit and ceramic bearing new IMS oil baffle gaskets ( $75.00 what a rip off) all new chains tensioner paddles hardened oil pump key valve job, new seals and reused existing valves new aos resize/ increase injectors to accomodate increased displacement from 3.4 -3.6 (part number ?) questions: replace all lifters ? intake to exhaust cam chain cylinoids? Whart else am I forgettting ???
  4. yep...bought the R and R's, ouch, but now i'll b e able to sleep at night. thanks
  5. I've tried to cut corners all along the way in my rebuild but still end up at the same place...replace everything I can afford; new 3.6 LN case, je pistons, updated IMS , balance recipricating assembly, new chains and paddles, aos, etc, etc.. But now I am down to the last MAJOR decision point (maybe). Rebuild the stock rods with 100k on them or replace ? I have purchased new pin bushings and ARP bolts. If I go aftermarket rods( approx.$1,500 or so) will my bottom end be essentially bullet proof and then can I drive the s#@! out of it and never worry about my rebuilt rods ? Its my first 911 so not sure what my future driving habits will be, track, autocross, whatever, but don't want to limit my options cause i got cheap, already have $9k in parts and machine work. I am all ears.
  6. Thanks.I'll have load tested but replacment is probably best approach
  7. my 99 cab engine is out and car has been sitting for 5 months, have on a trickle charger but battery got a little weak (playing radio). Now, when I turn on key I get the "rear spoiler is up" symbol in dash( it is down). Press the top down button and windows drop, top unlatches, rear top skin lifts fully and then ...nothing, top malfunction starts to flash. micro switch or will weak battery or both cause this ? ideas ? thanks
  8. Can you come to my house and install it ?? I'll make you a sandwich ; )
  9. length yes, journal size, no. weight, not sure. this is a daily driver, not track, In the process of dynamically balancing; Have new LN nickies, J and E pistons( 3.6 liter),new pin bushings, ARP rod bolts. Are my "rebuilt", stock rods gonna hold up ??
  10. Can I use Chevy rods in my rebuild? all the expense of new pin bushings,ARP bolts, or cost of aftermarket rods with the " hallowed " Porsche name on them is pissing me off. I know they used to use them on older P engines. They are very tough .
  11. thanks. As I suspected. who can I use on the east coat? recommendations?
  12. ok guys.. a little help here. My case is at LN engineering for new cylinders and IMS retro . They are sending me new JE pistons while the work is being done and are suggesting that I have the crank, rods, new pistons, flywheel, pressure plate,clutch..... the whole enchilda dynamically balanced. I am using the same crank, rods, with new ARP bolts( and dual mass flywheel) DO I NEED TO BALANCE THE ASSEMBLY OR IS IT OK? How much could I expect to pay? anyone in washington DC area anyone would reccomend ?
  13. rebldg. my 1999 3.4 with 3.6 liter nickies and IMS from LN engineering. do i need to dynamically balance the reciprocating assembly and flywheel, etc ?
  14. thanks Loren..I'll give it a try tonight, if radio works then all i have left is the motor !! ha ha two cracked cylinders, saving my sheckles for l and N and IMS retro. would you go up in displacememnt or stick with 3.4 ? I'd really like to bump up a littel bit.maybe 3.6. thoughts?
  15. 1999 carrera CDR-220 Becker Type 4362 Ser # x5018898 47/98...oh yeah, how do I find code, Lorn ?
  16. still have the Schnell cold air system for sale ?
  17. thanks all for the input. $8000 fo a '99 996 with slipped sleeve seemed a bargain..just repair like all the other motors in my life. ....I am finding that not to be the case.live and learn. very fascinaiting engine though. low weight components of aluminun alloy bolted to a "boat anchor" of a carrier bearing. very efficient BUT, it all has to operate within close tolerences to work properly and survive. I may very well choose the L&N route as it is my first porsche boxer motor and, as many of you have said, youshouldnt spend 6k on parts and cheap out the other 1500 by reusing easily repalcaeable parts while it is all apart. I am guessestimating taht i can get cases , machine work, parts and etc all doen in the 7-8 k range if i am careful. True or false ?
  18. thanks for the input. still on a mission to rebuild cheap cheap. used motors are no fun. cheap may not be possible either !
  19. Here's the link: http://www.qscusa.com/ why would I consider ? only $468 per set !! L and N is very proud of their "nickies" liners. search under ebay motors for: Porsche 996 95.5mm water cooled cylinders set Machining is the question I would have and will cast iron cool well enough ? tolerences to install? sealing surface at base, etc. Maybe L and N and will send me there specs , haahaha
  20. Anyone used them? will they work with stock, forged 996 pistons ? any experiences with these is appreciated special machining requirements ? I have d chunk in cyl 1 and 4.
  21. logray- how do you post pictures or links? each time I try to post a pic file, I get "the file too large " reply, other than the one bearing cap post above. Is there FAQ on the site to view ? thanks
