  1. Regarding the Carrera S vs. Z06, I have owned both cars, although sadly not at that same time. I originally purchased a new 2006 C4S Coupe which failed to excite me and I sold after about 6 months. I then bought a new 2006 Corvette Z06, my first non European car, which excited me greatly. The car's torque was amazing, handling very predictable and stable and brakes were outstanding. Although I did not track this car, I have done more than 1000 track miles in the previous generation Z06 which was good but not nearly as good as the C6 Z06.

The Z06 was also surprisingly compliant for daily road use and the seats while not nearly as good as a Porsche's were quite comfortable on long drives. The Corvette's steering and shifter were also numb and notchy as compared to the presision of a modern 911. The Corvette image was also somewhat of a detractor, but one which is quickly forgotten from behind the wheel. In terms of performance, The Z06 is a monster more comparable to a 997 Turbo, Ferrari 430 or a Gallardo, all of which I have driven In fact, the cars brutal acceleration reminded me more of the Bugatti Veyron than even a Mercielago LP 640. At $75K, the Z06 is just unbelievable value for money, but at $100K it would be criticized for marginal build quality and materials which would be fair at that price point.

I currently own a Carrera S Coupe which I much prefer to my C4S. Comparitively, the car feels lighter and more alive with its better steering response and the slightly narrower body and rear tire width also suits me fine. Neither as exciting a driving experience as the Z06 nor as contained and controlled as the C4S, the Carrera S is my favorite Porsche model for the road. That said, the GT 3 would be my choice were I planning to track a Porsche on a regular basis.

Although I may possibly never again own a Z06, I will fondly remember every drive I had in the car and have recommended the Z06 to several friends and clients in recent years. Everyone should experience the car's performance before drawing an opinion, as this car is far better when driven aggressively than most cars costing twice as much. It also puts a huge grin on your face every time you take it out. :D Not even a Carrera S can do that. B)

    I'm jealous :

    1. you bought a brand new 997 C4S . It failed to excite you, so you sold it after 6 months

    2. then you bought a new Z06 , which you loved . But , you sold it after a few months anyway.

    3. Then , just for the heck of it , you go out and get a 997 S , even though :" it is neither as controlled as your previous C4 S , nor does it put a grin on your face, like the 'vette ......"but you still like it better than any other car because it feels lighter and more alive and it suits you fine.... but it still is not as exciting as the 'vette .... but you think a GT-3 would be better if you would track the car ,except you did not buy it because you don't plan on tracking it....

You must have ordered each new car after driving the previous one for just a few weeks.

If I were to buy a new car every time the ashtray was full , my wife would have a serious discussion with me . Lol

  2. Jean,

What did you use to plug the bypass hose? How did you make sure that what ever it was did not get sucked into the intake?

I filled the hose from the resonator with silicone mold material .

It stays put , but can be removed anytime since it does not bond to the rubber .

You can also just buy a rubber plug in a Hardware store.

Just insert it deep enough to allow the hose end to fit over the resonator outlet .

The elbow in the hose will prevent it from going any further ,but also, since

the resonator is a closed box , it won't get sucked into the intake since there is

never any pressure on it .

  3. I'm about to embark into uncharted waters. The X51 airbox is a direct replacement for the stock 3.8L airbox except the air inlet tube connecting the airbox to the inlet manifold is larger ie. a wider diameter. Anyone tried the retrofit, the X51 airbox looks great and at $800 is a lot cheaper than the Champian Motorsport carbon fiber box which runs $3 grand.

    2007 C4S

I was under the impression that the X-51 air box had TWO air intakes ?

If so, it would not be a direct replacement for the stock 997 unit and would require a new engine hatch liner or cutting an additional hole into the existing one .

I would also check if the air intake connection to the engine is larger than the std. 997's

  4. I see there is an easy mod on here to disable the PSE cutout on the 996.

Is there anything similar for the 997?

You can just disconnect the orange plug in the engine compartment to have the PSE on permanently , or you can interrupt the 12 volt power going to the solenoid by installing a switch .

I installed a two pos.toggle switch in the ashtray .

Pos. 1 : PSE functions per factory

Pos. 2 : PSE is always on

  5. MY 05 997S - Nav places my location about 60 miles from actual location. At 1st I thought it was weather related - heavy cloud cover. But beautiful today and still doing it. Tried ressetting through SET - Factory setting (as a read in a past link) - but did nothing. Any suggestions?

I had the same problem a few months after I got the car.

    It was the GPS antenna.

It's under warranty , have the dealer fix it.

  6. question: is there a helmholz resonator valve in the 3.6 liter 997 (non-s) motor/airbox? or does the "sound mod" only pertain to 3.8 liter motors? thanks

The resonator is specifically designed for the 3.8 liter 997 S engine air intake only.

    It's purpose is to :

    1. reduce cabin background noise in the higher frequency ranges

    2. emphasize the sporty, load related air intake noise between 300 and 600 Hz.

( per Porsche "Technik" manual )

  7. I want to get this sorted out before I order parts, tools, etc., so a few questions:

Does the car need to be level to properly change the oil and filter, or can the rear end be up on low profile ramps?

If it has to be level & I don't have a lift, is there enough room under the car to remove the drain plug & filter? (I would be doing on my back under car.)

If it has to be up on the low profile ramps, do you get complete drainage?

    Thanks

    1. The car should be level

    2. I don't have aproblem getting underneath to change the oil,

    without putting it on jacks.

  8. you are prob right about the nav-tv web site not listing the unit for the 997 yet. like i said my buddy max at al and eds got the first one available for the 997. i have a 06 997s conv. and i installed it last night, and like i said it works great. ill try to post pics tomm.

What exactly does it do ?

Also, how difficult/easy is it to install ?

    Thanks.

  9. I got the small carpeted panels on the side off. Each is held in place with one T-25 screw.

Then there were two screws ( T-20 ) visible at each side panel , which I also removed.

But the panels will not come off .

Does anyone know how to remove them ?

    Any help is appreciated .

    Thanks.

The panels are held in with small clips. Pull them out towards you but be careful because you can break the clips on the trim piece of you dont pull it out straight enough. After that you've got 4 5mm allen locking tabs and one 7mm set screw.

I did finally succeed a while ago.

Thank you for your reply .

  10. hi everybody,

Unfortunately my 2006 Carrera 4S does not have auto dimming mirrors, homelink and rain sensor.

Auto dimming and homelink I really would like to have. I know they are available for 996 but are the retrofit kits available for 997 yet??

Outside the subject , does anybody have the detailed picture of the inside of PSE mufflers or a pic of a gutted one. I want to get my stock muffler hacked just like the PSE one with custom made tips that are not fake. ( I am after single tip look). The reason I will not purchase PSE is, there are no weight savings or power gains plus I would hack it to be loud all the time so no valve needed.

Here is a cutaway view of the muffler.

The bottom is the inlet, the middle is the outlet.

If you connect a pipe from the top (capped) outlet and connect it to the middle pipe, you have in effect

created a PSE muffler ( it bypasses the middle chamber , that's why it is louder )

Also, since the exhaust only goes thru ~1/2 of the muffler , there should be less resistance, therefore a few HP gained , although Porsche does not claim any.

    Good luck .

  11. My 2006 997 (C2S Manual) has 2400 miles on it. During the few times I drove around the 5000 rpm, I noticed an IMMEDIATE burning smell from the engine compartment. The smell goes away when the rpm is reduced. There is no smell when driving around 3000 or 4000 rpm. So the smell is not because the engine is very hot. Thoughts? Thx.

I never experienced this condition in my 997 S.

Rather than have amateurs second guess possible causes

on a web site , my car would have been at the dealer

    this morning .

  12. I am trying to locate screens that will fit a 997 Aerocup Kit front radiator area.

Who sells these things? What do they look like? How much of a PITA is it to install these? Do they come in color options?

I hate the fact the radiators are wide open to all type of debris with the Aerokit.

    Thanking you in advance!

    Deanski

    Dr. Shine

You can get the screens from Performance Products.

They come in black or silver and cost $300 for the set.

    Hope this helps .
