  1. First of, welcome to the community.  I live out in Summerlin and just recently joined PCA to try an take advantage of some of the local knowledge.  There is a meeting coming up that features a Maguire's rep to demonstrate the different ways to detail, etc..  Still ckecking to find a time when there is a track day (would really like to see what this car can REALLY do sometimes).----risking it out on 215 is just not smart.  Last thing I need is the wife to ask why the car was impounded for going 100+

As for joining PCA....all you have to do is join the national PCA at PCA.org and you are automatically joined into the local chapter as well (no local dues--very nice).  I just got my first local newsletter.

Did you buy your 996 from the dealer?

Small world, we probably just live a few miles apart!

I actually bought it from Shelton Maserati in Fort Lauderdale. In performing my pre-purchase due diligence, I learned that Las Vegas is NOT the best place to buy a Porsche. To get my car in Vegas would've cost me easily $7K additional, if not more.

Yea, the 215 is dangerous in terms of giving in to temptation. I also am very careful, even when I get the urge to open it up a little bit :-)

Thanks for the info on PCA, I will definitely check it out!

  2. I didn't even realize that you were from LV!  Are you a PCA member?  I just recently joined and have kept my eye out for the next local PCA meeting.

By the way, ARE YOU TOTALLY OFF YOUR ROCKER CALLING THE LOCAL DEALER???  I am guessing you were either (1) just checking for the heck of it--or for a good chuckle-- or  (2) never have done business with their parts guys.

Gaudin's parts desk is WAY OVERPRICED.  I have bought NOTHING from them.  Spent nearly $10K on misc upgrades over the last couple years and every time I tell my service guy about it and he says the same thing every time......"we bring it up to them but they don't seem to care that most people are buying from other dealers".  They will not ever entertain the notion of price matching.

Oh yeah, if you are a PCA member....are you active in the local chapter?

    Dell

Hey there Dell, I am guilty of both of the above :-) As someone had stated the dealer had them for < $300, I thought I would check. BAD IDEA!!

I am not a PCA Member, but I would be interested in learning more about it. I have had my 996 for a few months now and I love it! Glad to see another Las Vegan on the boards. What area of town do you live on? I am near Summerlin.

    Cheers!

  3. Ebay is the place. I am surprised you don't see one there. Wait a few days.

    Or.....buy one new for $330 here http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopca..._996tec_pg8.htm

Thanks a lot Scouser for that link!

I have been checking eBay for the past couple of weeks with only 1 wind deflector showing up (at $340). I might give it a few more days of monitoring eBay before ordering from Pelican, as my wife and I have a trip coming up June 18th.

    Thanks again!

  4. Does anybody have any experience with and without the wind deflector? I have a 2000 996 C4 Cab and it didn't come with the wind deflector. There is one on eBay right now for $340. Was the deflector even an option on the 2000 models?

My wife and I will be taking the car on a 400 mile road trip. Would the wind deflector be a worthwhile purchase? Does it substantially cut down on wind noise and turbulence? Does it take away from back seat storage?

    Thanks everybody in advance.

  5. I have the exact same problem.

I am very mechanically UNinclined, and I am looking for some easy instructions on how to hardwire my V1. I had my V1 in my previous car (BMW) and the DIY instructions for that hardwire were simple, even for an idiot like me.

I would love to find some easy DIY instructions on how to hardwire my V1. I am thinking about putting it right above the speakers on the driver side of the dash, as I feel it would be stealthiest there. I have a '00 996 C4 cab, and I don't think I want to mount it up high.

Any leads guys? TIA........Unless I am missing something, the DIY suggestions I have found here seem for tech-oriented guys. I am looking for a DIY for idiots lol.

  6. I had a squeaky cab top as well on my 200 996 C4. I tried a BMW product by the name of "GummiFlege" <sp?> to no avail. Maybe because I didn't apply it right, I am not sure. It didn't help.

I took my car into the dealership, and the tech said he lubricated all the seals. It is now extremely quiet and I am really happy with it!

They also fixed a very noticable creaking type sound whenever I turned the wheel and went over a bump. I took the tech for a ride, and he informed me as soon as he heard the noise that it was the "knee-bar". They inserted some felt lining on either side of the kneebar and it took care of that problem as well.

Between my fixed squeaky top and my kneebar being fixed, my car is really quiet (well relatively speaking!)

  7. your noise could be a bushing in the front end that is not tightened properly, though one would really have to be there to make a truely informed guess ...

Thanks for the response, Ted. I failed to mention the bushings were replaced at the time of me getting the 30,000 mile service, the new tires, new clutch, and a Mass Air Flow Sensor replacement.

Pardon my extreme ignorance, but can the bushings be adjusted???

  8. Pat, it's funny that you bring this up.  I can't say that my car smells like burning oil after a ride, but it does smell of something buring.  I've often thought it was electrical or something, but who knows.

A week ago my wife was driving my car (a very rare occasion if I can help it :D ), and she smelled something burning.  She had the good sense to park it at home.  Naturally, I was in a frazzle when I got home, but I could find nothing (visually burning).  Most of the smell seemed to come from the left (driver) side.  But that was a week ago, and no problem to date.

I have always noticed a burning smell, and the smell after my wife complained was no different.  I am beginning to attribute it to the engine being in the rear, the spoiler vents allowing quick vertical exit of the heat and other smells, being in close proximity to the rear of the car upon exit, and being in a closed garage.  Perhaps with other cars, which have a grill in front, and no vertical means for gasses to quickly escape, we don't smell the gasses given off.  Just my theory (perhaps to comfort myself!).

    Dean

LOL this describes my situation to a T!

I am the new owner of a 2000 Porsche 911 C4 cab 6speed. I bought it from a dealership in Florida, and upon delivery I noted the smell after my first drive. The car needed new tires BADLY, so while getting this done AND getting the 30,000 mile service done, the dealership informs me that my clutch is almost shot and *could* be the cause of the smell (I listed it as a complaint on my service ticket). So, even after a new clutch, I am STILL experiencing this smell.

It doesn't really bother me, but being a new Porsche owner, I am wondering if this is normal or not. My wife (in the last 5 days I have owned the car) is always asking me "Is that smell normal?" It definitely is exacerbated by being in a closed garage.

Also, whenever I am taking a turn and I hit any kind of indention (e.g. turning into the driveway), I hear a loud clunkish/body flex noise. Any ideas on that?

Thanks guys (and gals), and I am glad I found this forum :-)
