  1. OK so today I went along to the local Porsche breakers and had a look at a 987 airbox. It looked very big. I'm not even sure how you would start removing it via the service hatch without removing the engine / intake manifold etc.

The snorkel did look a lot larger. It’s not round but more oval shaped. So it’s probably as wide as the 986 snorkel at it thinnest point and then twice as wide at its thickest.

The guy at the parts place said he doesn’t think it would fit as the MAF from the 986 would not fit.

So I guess the question is how is the standard 986 airbox removed and has anyone removed a 987 airbox?

  2. OK I'll try that and let you know.

Some insurance companies do specify tracking devices to be fitted. I take my business elsewhere. A lot of people in UK now prefer to not have a tracker if it means your stolen car is not returned once the thieves have finished abusing it / being chased by Police. As we say in the UK - its swings and roundabouts.

  3. I thought it might be a tracker or mobile phone type antenna too. As far as I know the car does not have a tracker and it definitely has no mobile phone car kit installed either.

I also think the roof seems to go up one side first. The RHD seems to go up and drag the LHD side with it. If I stop the roof half way open/closed the RHD looks higher to the eye and it is stiff to move by hand where as the LHD can move up an inch or so easily by hand. Is this normal?

  4. Hello

So I finally got my roof into the service position. I had a bit of trouble with the glass window. It stays the rear side of the roll bar so I couldn't get the top all the way up. I found a handy strap inside the roof which I used to attach to the front bracket. Photos below.

So did I do this right?

So while we had a look around we found this device which had a sticker on it is saying made in Taiwan. The second photo shows roughly where we found it. The cable coming from it when through the bulkhead into the boot area near to the engine management. I pulled and the wire came off. It had what looked like an aerial type coaxial cable connector on the end. Photos below.

So obviously this is now removed. Any ideas what this is?

I found one of the cables with the ball jointed ends which holds the back of the roof to the car broken on the right hand side. Photo below.

    I guess this needs replacing.

What I am not happy about is the location of the roof when closed. It seems that the clam shell sits low at the front. It does not meet the two small 2 inch sized 'things' near the doors very well. Hopefully this can be seen in these photos.

I also found a ball joint loose inside the roof area. One of the balls with a threaded shaft. It was just loose and rolling around, well it would have rolled around but it was jammed in the foam liner.

Any ideas or advice is welcome.

  5. I dont have any costings for increasing the capacity of an existing motor. I have just been reading another thread where Todd [tholyoak] installed a 3.6 into an early box which started life as a 2.5 and then became a 3.4 and then 3.6. He seemed to get it going ok although it is simpler if you have a later E-gas Boxster. Its here: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=11411

Autofarm are the guys in the UK who seem to know what they're doing when it comes to rebuilding the M96 engines and converting / upgrading. Apparently you can get to 4 litres if you start with a 3.6 and they oversize its bores.

  6. Just to add my 2 cents worth: pretty much every enigne in the world rotates in the same direction except for 1990s and earlier Honda 4-cylinder engines. They finally caved and now their four cylinders rotate in the same direction as everyone elses.

Interesting about the boring of the 2.5L up to 3.8L. Same block so it makes sense. Would be easier than a transplant for sure. Any idea on exact price and if anyone in the US is doing it?

bump on this question, i dont see why it cant be done i'v had a couple of 1600cc vw motors built to 2332cc's and they have been very dependable and very strong motors

This doesn't necessarily answer your question:

    I think there are other differences other than 'just' the bore and stroke between the various 2.5 / 2.7 / 3.2 / 3.4 / 3.6 / 3.8 units.

  7. Before those of you who have far more money then me or are Porsche mega-purists thumb your noses at me, you ought to see the fix job he did on my boat camper top two years ago. amazing work at any price, a true artist!

Plenty of owner drivers out here who dont want or have money to throw away man. Not sure many would admit to that though! Chill yer boots.

Lastly I have the auto up/down top module. Although this module rocks for getting caught in poor weather but I don't recommend blindly just hitting "open" and driving away w/o see what crease may be developing in the wrong place. my damage was done before I had time to notice.

Which auto module do you have?

I'm thinking of getting one, which is best/easiest/cheapest?

  8. Well, I finally made it back and glad to see so much input....

This car has been like a tattoo...you get one and you want more! It all started when and M3 killed me at a light. I just thought wow, that was just too easy for him. So, I started looking for boosts anywhere I could find them, and that is what brought me here.

I definitely agree that this car is about handling and braking, and it has a great power/weight. But, I thought that with a chip, filters, etc, I might be able to add upwards of 40-50hp when all said and done. And relatively inexpensively.

I was just hoping to get it around the 300bhp area similar to the new Cayman's. Sounds like it would be a difficult task.

I've been thinking about this. The 3.2 987 comes with 280bhp and has exactly the same engine as the 986. So from what I read about the 987 it has a revised intake system. Also when I heard my friends it definitely sounded a lot raspier which made me think it might have a different exhaust system also. I'm sure I saw a picture somewhere of the underside of the 987 and it had much more purposeful tubular manifolds.

  9. Hello

I'm 6' 1" with what I would say relatively long legs. If it helps I buy 33" waist jeans [if I can find them] and 34" leg.

I find the seat in my 986 is not good. I have the standard seats with standard adjustment ie electric for the back only. The problem for me is that my left knee gets in the way of my left hand. As I am in the UK it is a RHD. So when I have my left foot over the clutch pedal and my left leg hard against the lower centre console my left knee is almost touching the steering wheel. I have considered different seats but done nothing yet.

My plan now is to remove the seat/s to see if I can adjust them somehow. I think if I can remove some of the sound proofing foam behind the seats and adjust the runner in some way to sit further back then this may give me an inch or so which would help.

I am also going to remove the lower centre console since this may give my leg some extra space.

I used to get pains in my back until I realised this was due to me having the seat too low. Now I have it one notch up and all the way back obviously and tilted as far back as poss till it hits the carpet/foam behind.

I have tried a 987 with the standard seats and it didn't fel any different to me. I believe they have moved the pedals deeper on the 987/Cayman but for me the biggest improvement was the ability to move the wheel up. The seat backs are definitely higher too on the 987. I wander if these can be retro fitted to the 986.

I thought about getting the Recaro racing seats too but I am not sure how they would be for longer drives as they have very little padding. Its going to be expensive at £3000 to try them.

Has anyone used any other seats in ther 986? I know where there are a pair of Sparco Milano seats going begging but I have checked and Sparco do not list/make a runner for the 986/996 so if I wanted to use these I would need to get some brackets made up.

  10. Hello

I'm in the UK and I see 997 sales troublesome for the 2 and the 4. A friend who is in the trade [sort of] called me Wednesday to ofer me a 997 C2S 2005 with 6000 miles on the clock for £57,500. The car had some specification and therefore would have been £70,000 - £75,000 new. It was by no means a lemon.

There may be a problem with the 4 over the 2 as the 'turbo look' has gone. I still like the 996 C4S and thats probably because of this. Where as the new 997 C4S looks almost identical to the 2 so for the average shopper why pay the extra 4 of 5 thousand pound? Especially when the 2 is so good!

If someone is buying for image then the 4 badge is not very noticeable.

  11. Any ideas as to why? I've spoken to my dealership and they are at a loss as well. The rear seats in the coupe are really uncomfortable even for a 9 year old and the complaint is the missing lower back support. It's not a big deal but it has got we wondering?

I'd guess it is something to do with the seat position. I have a coupe and have tried sitting in the back. I also tried sitting in the back of a cab and it seemed a lot further forward. I'm not sure if this is just the shoulder area or the whole of the back seat area.

  12. Hello all:

I'm spec'ing out a 2006 Carrera S - my first Porsche, and the culmination of a dream that I've had for nearly 40 years. I can't believe that I'm finally going to own one. I've saved for twenty years for this car, and I intend to keep it for a long while.

My question concerns the XRP option - the 5mm wheel spacers. Has anyone added these spacers to their car, and do they make a noticable difference in tracking / handling? Is there any downside to the spacers?

    Other options I'm considering include:

Slate Grey Metallic Paint - 59

Stone Grey Sport Seats - DD

    Adaptive Sports Seats - P01

    19" Carrera S Wheels - 403

Wheel Caps with Colored Crests - 446

    Sport Chrono Plus - 640

    Sport Shifter - XCZ

    BOSE System - 680

A simple options list; I know that I could spend thousands (or tens of thousands more!) on leather, carbon fiber, aluminum and wood - but those things won't make it a better driver! My wife is already breathing down my neck at the current price point... <g>

    Any comments welcomed,

    -Don Strimbu

    1990 BMW 735i (perfect - 83k original miles - "My Limosine")

    2003 Saab 9-5

and soon... 2006 Porsche Carrerra S - finally!

    Don

I have a 2004 C2S which i bought second hand. I dont have the spacers so cant comment. I didn't even know they were available but now I do I am curious...

I have the Sports seats. I have tried the standard seats and the adaptive and I orefer the sports. The standard and adaptive seats have a lot more padding. If you want more cushion then go for either of these. The sports seats have less cushion and as a result are harder but I think this gives much better feel. Thats why Ii prefer them.

I have the standard shifter and I find this troublesome getting into 2nd. This is more of a problem with the sport shifter. It can be retro fitted so dont worry too much about it. Some people say the standard plastic mount is not very sound and can break - leaving you holding your gear lever. Retro fit billet mount is much more solid either ith or without a shorter throw.

I have heated seats too - nice when its freezing!

I have the smooth multi function wheel. The buttons are useful but I could live wihtout them. I do prefer the smooth feel of the wheel so I would recommend thinking about a different wheel.

I have the dimming mirrors and recommend these. Rain sensor I could live without.

Colured crests - gotta have these but can be retro fitted.

Sport Chrono I have - this seems like a must have but the jury is out on the benefits.

Bose I dont have but wish I did.

Then there is PCCB on my wish list - its all about the carbon!
