  1. I know this is a old post but why do I need to use the LN Engineering housing can I not just buy the thermostat and install it in the original housing? I would like to get mine running a little cooler, I'm also getting the 3rd radiator kit.

You can do that, provided you either have, or can fabricate the tool required to take the thermostat out of the housing.

To do a clean install on the third radiator, you will also need to fab up some adaptors as the "S" cars have different diameter hoses and lines in the front of the car. There is also a really neat work around for this, a company called Precision Chassis Works makes modified front hard lines that have he hose size adaptor already welded in:

They sell these lines complete,or will do yours. They also sell a kit for those with aluminum welding skills. You can read more here: http://www.precisionchassisworks.com/boxster-cooling-line-modification.html

Thanks for the info but Is there a benefit to using the LN water neck? Is the OEM prone to crack?

I thought when you bought the radiator kit it came with the new hoses. http://www.suncoastparts.com/product/996thirdradia.html?Category_Code=996WaterCooling

The LN housing is much like the factory, but with subtle refinements. Nice unit, but if you are on a budget, you can use the factory piece, and they are not prone to cracking.

The 3rd radiator kit does come with hoses, but they are larger in inside diameter than the ones on your car. The cars that came factory with the 3rd radiator have larger diameter hoses and aluminum hard lines; the hoses that come with the kit will not seal to your hard lines due to the size difference and they will leak, which is way Precision came up with this fix. And they are replacement hard lines, not hoses.

Thank you very much for the information I guess I have something else to do. :-) I'm so glad I joined this group.

  3. Just don't ask about IMS or bore scoring;-))Anything else...anything;-)))

what kind of oil should he run? th_hidetb0.gif

seriously, though, the Porsche forums - this one in particular - are amazing. my girl has a Mercedes SL500, and I go to their forums asking something that should be easy to find - the torque specs for the oil drain plug, and the most helpful response I got was "if your mechanic doesn't know that, you should get a new mechanic."

I know what you mean, I was thinking of getting a ML but I found the Benz groups were not as helpful as you guys. So here I am.

  4. I highly recommend you check out Drive Clean on YouTube:

If you have specific detailing questions, the guy tends to be helpful.

Or, if you'd rather be distracted/entertained than educated, blonddrive.tv:

    ;)

But seriously, listen to Drive Clean.

OMG I'm not sure what I was asking about now. I have this crazy thing for blonds. WOW! :thankyou:

  5. I was wondering what do you do to maintain your car inside and out,

    Inside:

I remove the front and rear floor mats and beat some dirt out before vacuum them. I put them back in when I’m done with the car.

I vacuum the inside of the car, under seats and the seats also. Most of the times I use the plastic wand to keep from scratching the leather and plastic.

I like to wipe down the whole inside of the car with a damp microfiber cloth, I like to use a little soap to wash the cloth once in a while to remove the dirt it pick up. No sense washing the car with a dirty rag.

I use Meguiar’s leather cleaner and conditioner. I use a clean microfiber cloth to spread it out, I also don’t like to spray to much it gets on everything.

I use Armor All on the plastic. Most of the time I use a small rag and spray the rag.

On my 996 I use the vacuum and the plastic wand to vacuum out the leaves that get sucked on the front radiator vents. New is a new one for me.

I open the hood (front) and user Armor All on all the plastic covers.

    Outside

I first spray the tires with engine degreaser (Purple Power) and scrub them with a stiff brush then rinse them off before I start on the car. I do need to find brush or something to clean out the wheel studs holes. what a pain.

I like to wet the whole car down to cool it off before I start to wash it, and I don’t like to wash it during the hot time of day. I live in south Florida so most of the times I’m washing the car at 8PM.

I wet my washing mit and put soap on it and use that to wash the car. I don’t like to use the soap in the pail, I don’t like the idea of washing the car with dirty water.

When I’m done washing the outside of the car I open the doors and wash the edge, and wipe down all the rubbers seals to remove dirt.

I use Back to Black on all the black plastic parts I use a small rag, a old sock works really good.

I use Purple Power to clean the engine and engine bay. And using another rag I also wash some of the engine parts.

I wipe down the Windshield wipers with soap and water again to remove the dirt.

I like to use a Meguiar’s paste wax once a year and a Meguiar’s spray on wax a few times a year.

I wash all the glass with Windex and wipe it down with news paper. I was reading that you can use 0000 steel wool pad and Vinegar. I have not tried this yet but they say it works very well.

What do you do that works really well? I’m wondering if there is something to use on the rubber gaskets to keep them soft also what can be sprayed on the engine to make it look shiny but not something that will eat away at the rubber.

    Thanks

  6. Ok now I'm trying to fix the AC on my friends 99 996. Keep in mind the car was taken apart when he bough it, the car was in boxes so we are not sure what is missing or whats extra. I installed the old compressor, I did a vacuum test on it. It held the -25 psi vacuum with no problem I put oil and Freon but it did not cool the compressor would turn on I would see the clutch engaged but it never got cool. I check the high side and low side and the same pressure on both sides the compressor was not compressing. today he bought a new compressor and the same thing. same pressure on the low and high side. when I was putting in the engine and I was bolting things up I noticed a small white plastic things in one of the AC pipes above the engine that had a small hole in it, I'm guessing that's the orifice tube but I see a expansion valve in the front. which one should it be using it can't use both right? Any Idea what it could be. Should I try to take that white thing out of the line?

  7. There's not much use for the word "gentle" in porsche vocabulary, with a certain exception: it's not gentle on your pocketbook and you don't drive it gently; but, you have to be a gentleman when someone at a parking lot asks you why you didn't buy a 'vette. Nevertheless, drive the "h" out of it and have a ball like the rest of us.

You have a point! You know a good friend of mine asked why I did not Vette, I'm not sure why I think cause it's a Vette.

  8. I'm looking for new floor mats for my 2000 I had the Lloyd custom floor mats and they are great but they show wear pretty quick. I was thinking about getting the OEM ones if I can still find them. Which ones are you using?

Now my drivers seat is looking a little worn its not to bad but I would like to get it fixed before it starts to look bad. Anyone you recommend or have used in South Florida?

    Interior

    Thanks

    Ruben

  9. Front bearings? Brake caliper lose, Bushings. Try this. drive at a few miles per hour then stop hard. then back up see if it pops when you back up? if it does then have someone stand by the car do it again. I once worked on a car that would only do it in the morning. when backing up out of the drive way. one that one it as front week bearing they would stick being parked all night but during the day it was fine.
