  1. I just bought my 996 last Friday and it only had one key and the remote does not unlock or lock the doors I can use the key. I see the light blink when I hit the button, but unlike my friends when he unlock the car his blinks rapidly not just one blink.

What shops are you guys taking the car to get the key programed? I called a shop in Miami and they said it can only be the dealer I called the dealer and they want $600 for a new key.

So far I have done the following. I replaced the battery – I put the battery in backwards – started the car and hit the lock unlock button. I’m going to try to remove the cars battery and check the fuse on the control box under the seat.

  2. I'm a big fan of OE fluids. Antifreeze $30/gal from Sunset Porsche. OE manual transmission fluid 3L not too expensive either.Brake fluid ATE gold 200 is good enough for street driving. Power steering fluid Pentosin CHF 202. Engine oil I like Motul 8100 xcess 5w-40Re the window, are you sure it's the motor and not the regulator?

I think when ever possible one should use what the OEM uses. the way I look at it. if the OEM part lasted 10 years then I guess I will get another 10 years of a new OEM part. Of course if there is a problem with the OEM part and they aftermarket has a fix for it then go aftermarket. Thanks. I think it's the regulator but I thought it came with the motor.
Good you have the right thinking. You had me worried when you mentioned pepboys :)No, the motor is a separate part which is like $400+

I would like to find a local shop to give my business too, I don't like to order everything via the Internet. I need to start looking for a few local shops to buy supplies. I have seen online the prices for the regulator, I will be getting that soon. Oh I have a questions. when I open the passenger side door the glass does not go down the 10MM or so the glass hits the top of the rain channel, could that be caused by the bad regulator?

Not sure. Maybe someone else can chime in. I think there's a micro-switch behind the door handle (inside the door) that activates the lowering feature when the door handle is pulled. At least that's how I think it works.

Yes I did read about that, I think I will look into the micro switch when I replace the regulator.

  3. Congratulations! You didn't state the mileage, but for model year 2000, the spark plugs should be changed every 45k miles. While you're in there you should change the tubes and O-rings as well.I think you're going to be surprized how expensive it is to get a second key with working remote.

It has 61500 or so miles on it now. Adding plugs to my list. what are the tubes and O-rings. Remember new to Porsche's.

Yes I have seen how much keys are. but I have to have one good working key. Plus its a Porsche you want to play you have to pay.

  6. Hello I drove home my new 2000 996 hardtop. Wow I love the car. This is the first car I have ever owned and it’s amazing I have always driven SUV's. I am starting a list of things that I need to fix and do, and I would like your opinion on what I should do and use. I'm not sure how it was maintained before, but it looks to be very well maintained but who really knows, I would like to do a few things but I’m not sure what fluids would be recommended and where I can get them, I’m not sure if Advanced Auto or Pep Boys would carry something I can use. Well here is my list of little things in no particular order plus a few big things.

As always thanks for your opinion.

New floor mats and trunk mat. (I'm looking at Porsche OEM mats and a Lloyd trunk mat)Remove old tints.Install new tints.A Second key with working remote.Fix the 1st key to remote lock and unlock car.Clean up head lights.Change antifreeze.Change brake fluid.IMS bearing. Just in case.Change 12 volt power outlet. On order!Replace air filter.Replace cabin filter.Change oil and filter.

I think the window motor on the passenger side has seen better days, I think that will be at the top of the todo list soon, it’s making noise and the window does not go down very far when you open the door and it hits the molding.

  7. Just don't ask about IMS or bore scoring;-))Anything else...anything;-)))

I have already learned quite a bit about the IMS problem, I think that will be the first thing I do to the 2000 996 I'm going to buy. I I'm not sure what Bore scoring is I guess I have more to read. Oh I do have a ton of questons but I will be searching and reading.

Thanks for the welcome. Glad to be here and looking forward to what lies ahead.

  8. Hello I have been part of other forums over the years and I have seen someone new get beaten down by the masses for posting a picture or asking a question, I understand a little kidding around and good clean fun but give us a break. I’m new to this forum and Porsche’s but I would like to learn more about the Porsche I own and the people that own, fix and enjoy them as I hope to for years. I have always enjoyed working on my toys from my BMX bike when I was a kid to my 900RR speed bike and everything else I have owned over the years. I know from time to time I may post a simple stupid question that is common knowledge to all of you but not to someone new, I just hope that my question are not seen as stupid but more as someone that would like to learn more.

By the way the car is coming along really well, I drove it around yesterday. I have to replace the front and rear brakes and the cam timing is a little off and the top working at all.

Newbie working on learning more and having fun every step of the way.

  9. Hello a friend of mine is looking to buying a 2000 996 for himself. What should he be looking for? I have seen a video on Youtube saying to look at the hood and trunk for originals labels for the car that would indicate that it has not been in an accident, leaks on the or around the engine and transmission. Anything else you can think of?

Thanks for your help. One more joining the family.

Check paint (in or around openings for overspray).

    Check interior.

    Check A/C.

    Check Heater.

    Power windows

Radio (and CD changer if equipped)

    Windshield wipers and spray

Check hood for OEM labels and matching paint.

Check trunk for OEM labels and matching paint.

Check front tie rods and bushings

    Check tires and rims

Check under car for dents or abuse.

    Check coolant level and color.

    Check serpentine belt.

    Check water hoses.

    Check motor oil and level.

    Check engine for oil leaks

Check transmission for oil leaks and oil level.

    Check power steering fluid.

    Check drive axles and boots.

Plus anything that looks out of place or missing.

  10. I see in your pic you left the rear bumper off. If you remove the rear bumper (which is very easy to do) then you get more clearance... then a standard floor jack and about 19" jack height in the back is all you need to roll the engine out, with the nose of the car on the ground.

I thought about that but I was not sure how to remove it and I did not want to break something else. This is my first time working on a Porsche, a few friends of mine are now asking me if I would work on their 911.

  11. I drove a 2000 Boxster S as a daily driver for 4 years.

95% of the time it was perfect -- had to juggle cars with the wife once a month or so when I needed

    more than 2 seats.

    Mike

Thanks. I know some things will break and thats fine every car sooner or later will break down. My thing is I don't want to be fixing something ever weekend I will be OK with that.

  12. welcome to the family

Florida is rich with Porsche club owners / chapters. If you haven't explored it yet, go to pca.org and join. Since you now have a Porsche you should be able to log in and decide on membership / Club options. There is a map showing all the states and chapter locations, contact info. You're down Ft Lauderdale area? There are lots of Porsche shops, fanatics running around down there.

Thanks I will look into it.
