  1. I did install the 160 deg thermostat and in cold weather or at highway speeds the engine tops out at 180 instead of 210. That works great. Its when I'm going slow in town or up the mountain passes that it will jump right up to the 210 zone where the cooling fans kick on. But, over 95% of my commute is highway so it runs right at 180. I have checked the front side of the radiators but have not had the nerve to take the front bumper skin off yet to do a deep cleaning. Is there a posting on here or pelican or somewhere that I can follow that is clear as to how to disassemble the front bumper to get to the radiators? I have a strong suspicion its relatively clean in there but don't know that for fact since i haven't been in there.
  2. I'm a strong believer that too much heat kills. I've seen engines with lower temp thermostats live for literally hundreds of thousands of miles. I guess I can tie an external toggle switch to the existing fans or add my own fan to one of the radiators to provide more cooling when tooling through the mountain roads.
  3. Is it possible for the dealer to change the cooling fan on/off temperature settings?
  4. purging the air from these coolant systems took me multiple trys to get it right. I'm with the guys on here. follow the expalantions on here for purging and make sure its not just air that is causing you to overheat. Meaning it took me multiple rides down the road to get to full speed. i.e. two miles down the road and back home again by the time I reached 180 and then parked and let it cool down. topped off fluid, (it would take on another 1/4 to 1/2 gallon each time). Then pull the little purge cable and add some more coolant and then drive down the road and back again and let it cool down. Did this multiple times over more than one day to get it back and then drove cautiously for a week or two until I was convinced it was all fine again. I was freaked out. I thought it was acting just like head gaskets but it wasn't...just trapped air.
  5. Are they able to resleeve the cylinders? Or is the engine case just junked of there is cylinder damage or excessive wear?
  6. Okay, thanks! I take it there is no way of knowing what year it was rebuilt? When the factory rebuilds a 2.5l, what do they do with regards to all the new engine factory tolerances? i.e. cylinder bore, rods and mains?
  7. Rebuilt by Porsche? It was installed in 2008 on a 99 base boxster after the original engine came apart.
  8. is there a thread here that clearly and accurately explains the engine serial number decoding? My 99 got a new engine in 2008, the replacement engine S/N: M96/20AT65X65895, can anyone tell me what all these numbers mean? thanks, James
