  1. Thanks guys. Question: what if the metal bits were ferrous? What would that indicate? Just trying to learn... @JFP -- I've thought about using a spin-on filter but then I wouldn't be able to cut apart the filters anymore. Does the superior protection of a spin-on outweigh the risks of not being able to cut apart the filter? @Silver_TT -- Any other explanation for the silvery paste? I'm guessing it's not that my IMS bearing is vaporized... otherwise, wouldn't be seeing other symptoms? :) Patrick
  2. NO, even a strong magnet does not appear to attract the two largest metal flakes. The sand-sized bits don't attract either, but they're covered in oil so I'm not sure they'd lift out of there anyway.
  3. Hi Renntech'ers! This is my first Porsche. Bought it about a year ago. 2002 with 60k miles. Original IMS. I drive it only a few thousand miles per year, including occasional AX'ing and an annual track weekend. But I'm nervous about the IMS, so I'm changing the oil (Mobil-1 0W40) every six months. The first oil change revealed only some black plastic bits, which did not raise concerns. The second oil change (yesterday) revealed a few metal bits. The largest was a flat flake a approximately 2mm x 3mm. There were a few smaller ones. And there were some tiny flecks, which may have oxidized overnight(?) since they appeared orange/brown by the time I took the pics the next days. There were no metal bits on the LN magnetic drain plug, however, the plug was covered in a kind of silvery, greasy residue -- kind of like a silicon grease. Please see attached pics. Are these cause for concern? Thanks! Charley
  4. Subject line says it all. With my helmet on, there is no way I'd pass the "broomstick test." Do I need to buy rollbar extensions? If so, what do you recommend -- the Brey-Krause kit? Anyone have a used one they're selling? Thanks for your help!
  5. Sorry -- the title got cut off. It's supposed to end with "...feedback requested." Thanks all!
  6. Just bought my first Porsche, a 2002 Boxster with 58k miles. IMS has never been replaced, and I believe it has the single-row bearing. I've had it for a few thousand miles and it's twice made an unexplained grinding some that... scared the hell out of me for obvious reasons! I can't figure out where it came from or what it was. My indie tech thinks it might have been the non-Porsche brakes that the prior owned had installed. It will be due for a new clutch sometime in the next 10k, and I'll do the replace the IMS with the LN retrofit at that time. In the meantime, I'm rolling the dice. So, being a bit nervous, I did an oil change even though it wasn't due. I cut apart the filter. No silver metal at all. But a few black bits, which seem to be perhaps plastic. They're not metal (a magnet doesn't attract them). It's possible that they are from from when I cut (with a hacksaw) the end of the plastic part of the filter. But some of the black bits were deep in the recesses of the filter folds when I unfolded it, so that seems unlikely. Pictures below. Thoughts? Thanks! Charley
  7. Thanks Loren, but RMG and Sharkwerks are further than the seller is willing to go. Any experience with Kirberg Motors or another shop near San Carlos? Thanks! Charley
  8. I'm planning to buy a 986 from a seller that lives in San Carlos, CA. He's not excited about hauling down to the South Bay to go to one of my preferred shops: RMG or RennShop. The seller has used Kirberg Motors (http://www.kirbergmotors.com/) in Belmont. This guy on Pelican seems to think Kirberg is good: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/264553-ppi-san-mateo-close.html Any feedback or other suggestions? Thank you!! Charley
