  1. Could be something wrong with your V1. I had an Escort X50 go bad on me, I figured it out by noticing it not going off when I drove by one of those signs. I sent it back to Escort & they replaced it under warranty. I sure appreciate those signs, they help me test out my detector from time to time! I'd have your V1 checked out.
  2. I tried cloning my SIM card with a kit I bought off eBay, and ended up frying it. I ended up adding another line to my service, as pulling the sim out of my phone each time I drove wasn't worth the hassle. FWIW, I'm in Houston, and got HORRIBLE reception using ATT. At the suggestion of my Porsche dealer, I switched to a T-Mobile SIM, and it works much better. I actually tested both SIM's (ATT & T-Mobile) by driving on the same freeway with each while talking to my wife. I could not complete a call with ATT without having it drop. T-Mobil did not drop calls on this same road.
  3. Beware of the conclusions from these "independent" testers. If you do some searching on them, they almost all have some sort of agenda. FWIW, I bought the Escort ZR3 http://www.escortradar.com/zr3.htm because it has three separate emitters (two front, one back), and because it integrates with my Escort 8500 X50. I hosestly can't tell you if it works or not, as I've yet to get shot by a laser unit since I installed it.
  4. By the newer 997.5 cars,--they redesigned the rear lights which fixed that problem. Um, not. I now own a 2006 S, after the 2005 got whacked by a Suburban (Suburban was totalled, 997 survived). I still have the same issue with the '06, but I've solved it by using compressed air from a can. I use it on the front turn indicators, around the side mirrors & side markers, and around the tail lights. Works like a champ. While I'm on the cleaning thread, I've settled on using Zaino a few times a year as a sealant. I love how easy Zaino Z2 is to put on, and how long it lasts. Recently I tried out Griot's Spray on Wax as an added layer. You can apply the Spray on Wax while the car is still damp. I go over the car once with a large micro-fiber to get most of the water off, then spray the wax on as I finish drying the car. It really makes the finish pop, and requires hardly any more work than drying the car. I still use Zaino as a sealant, just put the Griots on top when I wash the car.

I couldn't find any on a 987, ended up bringing one from the fuse box through to the front. if you have a 997, you can use the CD player wiring harness located on the passenger side, under the carpet (where the CD player would go or is mounted) Most all of the Dennison Ipod users have tapped into the switched power wire and ground. 12V switched = red/green. See pic Thanks Bob, that's exactly what I was looking for!
  6. I'm planning on installing a laser jammer (probably Blinder M20) for the front only. Since I have a laser detector in my Escort, I don't need to hear the alerts from the jammer, I just need it to jam, so I won't have to bring any wires into the passenger compartment. This should make the install a fair amount easier. What I need however is a source of power under the bonnet that is switched with the ignition. Can anyone help me locate one?

We're too busy posting pics of our cars and debating what wheels to get on the rennlist I guess. :) Not to mention all the post trashing and one upsmanship stuff by a select few...yuk.... :rolleyes: I try to ignore all that stuff, but sometimes it gets tiresome. Still a good forum though. I read through the Cayman owners manual, and it actually has the same text in it about one touch operation of the passenger's window as the Carerra manual. I'm still thinking there is a part swap we can do to get the windows in the Carerra to act the same as the Cayman, but I've got no clue as to where or how to look.

  9. As jhbrennan said: One-touch operation f Press the rocker switch upwards or downwards to the second stage. Window moves to its final position. Press again to stop the window in the desired position. One-touch operation for closing the passenger’s window is available once the window is approximately half-way closed. I'm sure it's meant as a safety feature. Now about that cayman window controller... :)
  10. Where is the window regulator located? I wonder if swapping out a cayman one would solve the problem. Of course it probably costs more than the $300 for the wilhelmy solution. :)
  11. Yup, Jhbrennan is correct. I just tried Loren's suggestion, but no luck. The passenger side only goes up one-touch from the midpoint. I'm familiar with the wilhelmy solution, just didn't want to spend the $300, in spite of all the good things it does. I was hoping a simple swap out of some Cayman part for the Carerra equivalent would solve the "problem". Thanks for the comments. Maybe I'll have to cough up the dough.
  12. You know how the passenger window only goes up automatically after it is past the midway point up? It's a minor frustration for me. I'd rather it go up like the driver's window. Well this week I had a Cayman loaner while my 997 was in the shop, and guess what? The Cayman's passenger window operates the way I'd like the Carerra to. One touch, and the passenger window goes up in the Cayman. With so many things in the interior being shared between the Cayman and Carerra, it occurred to me that there might be a mod to make the Carerra window act like the Cayman. Would substituting the Cayman window switch for the Carerra do it (doubtful)? Is there a relay? Anyone have a clue what to change out?
  13. I can't help you with the issue of how to buy a C4S, but I can wrt the model. The 996 was built through model year 2004. The first 997 was introduced in 2005, so the car you are considering must be a 996. The two are easy to distinguish by looking at the headlights. The 996 shared the same "flattened oval" headlights with the Boxster. The 997 has more upright and round headlights, much more similar to the old 911 design. If you are going to buy a 996, do some research on rear main seal failures (RMS). Again, I don't know that much about the 996, but I do know that they had some problems with this. I'm pretty sure that by my 2004 they had it sorted out, but you might want to educate yourself on it. Good luck.
  14. Count me in as another idiot that waves. I'd say about 1/8th of the Porsche owners I pass even notice my car, and about half of them wave back. The other half look at me like I'm some sort of freak (which of course I am, but that's another story). I'll keep waving.
  15. I would also think long and hard about ground clearance. With the standard ride height on my 997S, I scrape the nose almost every day going in and out of fairly gentle driveways. While a lower ride height may look better, and with something like the PSS9's also handle better, it will also make the car a little less usable as a daily driver in my opinion.
  16. Reading the C&D report makes me wonder... Why doesn't Goodyear make a set of Eagle F1's that fits the 997 and/or 997S?
  17. OK, I know this is in the DIY section, so most folks that read this like spending time doing this sort of stuff. ...and I admire you ability to do so. But... for those who either don't like doing stuff like this, or aren't good at it, FWIW I had a local car stereo shop install a hardwire to a switched circuit in the fuse box. Took all of about 1/2 hour for them to do it. It looks great, and I didn't have to futz with stuff and worry about screwing up my car in the process. Oh, and it cost me all of $35
  18. Personally, I'd drop the aero kit, the extended nav, the cd changer, and possibly the bose. The 2007 will play mp3 cd's, so you could burn probably more mp3's onto one cd than you could fit into the changer. I love a great sounding car stereo, I just don't think the 997 is a very good environment for good sound. Besides, the engine is so enjoyable to listen to. It's all a matter of what you want though. In the end it's your ultimate car, not anyone else's. Good luck, and enjoy.

  20. At least on cars with the Sport Shifter, Porsche tells you that 1st will be difficult to engage until the car warms up. This is just normal. Otherwise wrt getting into 1st gear I do two things that I was taught years ago when cars were steam powered (ok, maybe not that long ago). First of all, when you are at a complete stop, depress the clutch, slide the shifter into 2nd gear, and then without releasing the clutch slide it into 1st. Not exactly sure how this works (I'm not the worlds greatest mechanic), but it is very clear it does. The other thing I do, when I'm trying to shift into 1st while moving slowely (10mpg or less) is the same thing I do with all downshifts -- double clutch. It makes downshifts much smoother, and you get to hear the nice little engine blip. :beer:

  22. Next time I replace tires, I'm going to save a front also, so I have one of each size. I hadn't thought of mounting it on an old cheap wheel, but not a bad idea.
  23. One question I've heard is whether or not it is possible to fit a rear tire that has flatted into the back seat of a coupe. Some folks say yes, and I can now confirm this. No, I didn't flat. My rears were worn out (after only 8800 miles), so I purchased a pair of sportcontact2's for the rear, and when this set wears out, I plan to go to PS2's. My 997 is my daily driver. I need it functional each day. Since these high performance tires seem to often be special order, I had NTB save one of the rears so that if I ever flat, I will have a tire I can mount on the rim and use for a couple of days till the replacement comes in. The old tire fit in the back seat with no problem.
