Pics of the plugs. 1-3 are clean, as is 5. But 4 & 6 [emoji15]

Symptoms are:

Ticking/knocking noise:

-high oil consumption. Long trips were not bad at all. Short trips, I would go through 5L of oil in 1k km of driving.

-left hand side exhaust tips were black a day after cleaning them

-Ocassionaly blue/greg smoke on start up, especially if it was just started up (say; moved a spot in the driveway and moved back)

The plan is to save my pennys and yes, eventually rebuild this motor with lne nickies and je pistons.

Got the bad side done this weekend.  Got caught with no 14mm hex bolt for the timing chain tensioner, and had to wait until sunday morning to go buy that socket.  and of course the store has every individual socket except that one, and of course that one is only available in a complete set @ $49.99...lol

As suspected; scored cylinders,  Looks like 4 & 5 are toast.  Didn't take pictures of the spark plugs but you can imagine what they looked like after seeing those heads.

Will do Ahsai! I've had a hard time finding 3.6 specific threads. Those links you gave me to the shop manuals will help I'm sure. Already printed a bunch out.

Around here (ottawa, canada) aftermarket modifications are not covered unless you have special coverage for them.

Surprised though, very little damage for a car that ended up upside down [emoji14]

I'm no body guy but looking at that damage, looks like it can be fixed. Hopefully the impact did not get to the engine or bent the frame.

Not quite sure yet. I am assuming from my symptoms that I have scored/tapered cylinders and the rings are toast, letting oil by. Obviously have some seal issues with the valves also....

Hoping to have the heads off this weekend. ...maybe even have the case split. Hope to see a smoking gun.

Bad side of the engine. The 4 & 6 are full of oil. Bad pics...but the shiny black stuff is oil.

Jeez...took some wacks with a rubber mallett but it came off....though I need a new pulley now :(

Now...I've notice something off. This thing here is a hollow insert. With nothing going to it (& had nothing going to it). Pretty sure something goes here as when I remove the spacer, the hole is threaded, and it's filled with grime. Same side as my "bad" side.

Could this be a source of grime getting into the cylinders?

How do I get this pulley off? Is that some sort of nut/washer on in the center I need to remove? There nothing that fits in there, just a round hole.

Looked around the net and couldn't find much....Any pics of this on a 3.6 motor?

Also....the engine disassembly how to on pelican show that they remove the IMS bearing before splitting the cases. Is this actually required? Can I not undo the flange bolts and split the case that way?

If your removing the intake manifold, try and take a peak or cell phone pic of inside the Intake plenums. the heads on cylinders 1-3 were super clean. Cylinder #6 had oil pooling in the valves. If you see oil in there, you found your problem and replacing the aos won't do anything.

When I bought the 02 C4S in April of last year, I saw that the button for the porsche sports exhaust wouldn't do anything. The exhaust was always loud...

Well...when I took the rear bumper off it was clear to me as to why it didn't work. The passenger side valves vacuum line was unplugged. I also noticed the seems of the mufflers splitting and the passenger side muffler had a huge patch job done. Looks like they gutted the muffler on that side.

I am wondering if the previous owner unplugged it because the system was giving him a hard time with an exhaust that was falling apart. Or he just wanted the loud noises on 24/7. I would think this is a pretty simple system...

Any diagrams or threads on this system I can read up on? I would like to have this feature on the car when I'm back up and running. Being able to stay quiet when I'm in the neighborhood would give me some huge bonus points with the wife :)

I get that, but it's $500 for this stand. $500 can buy me a new set of main bearings. Or a new set of rod bearings. Or a new....it buys a lot of parts I will need and use.

If I have to, I have to buy it. But if there are folks here that have mounted their engine fine (as I see in multiple pics) then why even spend that money?

I see pictures of the watercooled engine mounted on regular engine stands without the special stand adapter everywhere. How safe is this to do? Having a hard time justifying the $500 various places charge for this adapter as its something I may use for 2 days or so.

What are your opinions?

Hate to say it but sounds like you have some scoring going on. Is one side of the exhaust tips darker than the other? My left hand side was black from burning so much oil.

My symptoms are worse though. I burned through 5L of oil in 1000km (all short trips) and after the engine is warm, I can hear a loud engine ticking/tapping noise. Ocassionaly, My car would spew out blue smoke on start up also.

If I didn't have oil burning and engine tapping noise, you'd never know...car drives perfect.

Yes, I do. Problem is preventing the driveshaft from moving. Any tricks for that?

There's 3 hex bolts that are a pain to get off. The other 3 came out no problem as I've got a lot of room to move but from the other side, it's tight. Can't get my ratchet with the hex socket on it at all. But your saying once these 6 bolts are removed, I should be able to move the driveshaft back without having to touch the front diff ?

I'm in the process of dropping my engine and gave up on the driveshaft tonight...

Am I able to disconnect the driveshaft from this flange? Closest to the transmission. Car is a 02 C4S.

Was it a diy thing? If so,care to share the procedure?
