  1. I need to bring my car into an Indy in the area. Does anyone have any experience in any of them around the area that you can recommend. I used to go to Fisher Motors but I believe he closed shop. I don't want to take it to the dealer as their labor rate is way too high. Let me know what your experience is and how recent. Thanks in advance.
  2. I've been doing searches all afternoon and have not found anything about it. Can someone tell me how to remove the plastic cover of the dome light so I can replace the bulbs. It looks like there is a notch on the plastic lip closest to the winshield. I was going to pry it open but I don't want to break anything. Can someone point me to a link or something. Can you also tell me what type bulbs to use. It looks like the there's a festoon type bulb in the middle and a 194 type bulbs for the map lights. Please confirm. Thanks.
  3. That's not a problem. That's a normal feature of the car to give you a visual on your oil level. As far as how often to change the oil, I change mine around 6-7K miles, regardless of time. Mobil 1 synthetic is supposed to last 12K miles. I'm sure some people change theirs more often. I just don't think it's worth the extra cost for 9 quarts and over $4/qt.
  4. Got the car back last night. I played around with the latch microswitch by pushing in on the button. I thought I'd do this first before I open it up. And, wala, it started to work. It appears that the switch is just sticking, maybe from having the hard top on for several months throughout the winter. I sprayed the inside with an electronic cleaner. That seems to do the trick. It doesn't look like I'll have to replace the switch. Thanks to all the help though. I saved this thread for future reference. I get the feeling that I will have to deal with this sooner or later.
  5. Thank you all for the response. I appreciate that. This car is actually my wife's. She's too excited to use it today and could not wait for me to fix it. So she brought it to the dealer this morning. I get a call from the dealer this afternoon. They said it's the microswitch in the latch on the windshield. It needs to be replaced. They said $500 for part and labor. I was shocked. What a rip... Needless to say, I'm going to do it myself. Now, they're charging me $135 for diagnosis. What a rip too. The car had the extended warranty that just ended last year. I do have some questions for you all. Is the microswitch a dealer item only? If not, any recommendation on where to get? Pelican Parts? How do you remove the part that houses the microswitch? Does anyone have a diagram or picture somewhere that you can provide a link? I'm picking the car up tonight. I'll just have to put the hardtop back on until I get the part and figure out how to replace. Any insights you can share will be much appreciated.
  6. Hi all, We're finally expecting some spring weather in Chi town. I just took the hardtop off today and put it away and getting ready for the nice sunny days ahead. I tried to close the softtop and when I press the rocker switch, nothing happens. The handbrake is pulled up and the idiot light on the dashboard is on. The car is running so I don't drain the battery while operating the top. I also checked the fuse (location d3 in the box) and that's okay. In reading some of the posts, I understand that there are a number of microswitches used to allow the top to be closed or open. Anybody have any ideas where they're located and how I can check? What's the most likely switch that I need to check? Any help is appreciated. I dont want to take it to the dealer since it might be just a switch?
  7. I just wanted to get back to the board on the resolution of this problem, for future reference to others. I did get the new switch last week but waited to replace the one I have on the car until the weekend. I ordered the switch from Porsche-parts-direct.com. I ordered 2 switches for spare. The switches were made in Germany, by Meyle. They came in a nice plastic package in a box - 1 each box. I put replaced the part I have on the car with this one. When I put the key in the ignition to turn and start the car, my initial impression was it was a little tight (some resistance when turning). The car started right up, no problem. So, it is a faulty ignition switch that was just replaced a couple months ago. Beware of faulty switches. I believe the brand on the faulty switch is Febi ordered from autohausaz.com. I've ordered a lot of parts from them before and this is the first one I had problems. I will continue to order parts from them, despite this problem. I'm sure it's not their fault. Thanks again Loren. I would not have tried this if not for your suggestion. Probably would have cost me a lot more than what I spent on parts if I had it towed to the dealer.
  8. I can't quite remember where it was made. I still have the box but it doesn't have any info on the brand and origin. I'll try a new switch. It's pretty cheap and easy to replace. Thanks, Loren.
  9. I got it from Autohausaz.com, recommended by one of the posts here.
  10. Hello folks, I'm a relatively new member and first time post. I've done an extensive search on posts and read all posts related to starting problem but I did not see anything that may explain my problem. When I turn the ignition key and nothing happens. Before it went dead, it gave me a hint that it was about to die. There were a a few times that it happened but in re-trying I got it to crank and start. This time, it is consistently not doing anything, not even a click when I turn the key. About 3 months ago, I had my key stuck in the ignition and had weird electrical problems - headlights will not turn on. After checking out all the posts here, I found out that I needed a new ignition switch. I replace it and everything was fine after tha This particular problem started manifesting itself about a month ago. Fortunately when it did not start, I have the car in the garage. I checked the battery and it's okay. All electrical in the car works Again reading the posts here, I replaced the clutch pedal switch and the plunger type part close to the switch. Still no change. When I turn the key to start, nothing happens - no click, nothing. I also checked the fuse for the ignition. Looks okay. I'm stumped. Any ideas before I have it towed to the dealer. Am I missing anything. I'm pretty handy and have done most work on this car and other cars. I'd like to check the starter but don't exactly know where it's located. I've only had this car for over a year.
  11. Hello everyone, New member and first post. I did a search and learned a lot about top replacement and vinyl window replacement. Great site, by the way. Lots of very informative and helpful members. The vinyl window of my 99 Boxster ripped last Winter when I retracted the top to put my hardtop while the car was sitting out in below freezing temp. Now that I took the hardtop off and need to use the soft top, I need to replace the vinyl window. In reading a lot of the posts, it appears that my choices are to replace the window, replace the top with the vinyl window or replace the top with the glass window. Ive decided to go with the vinyl window replace but don't know of any place in the area where to take the car. Can someone recommend a place in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. Actually, anywhere in the Chicagoland area would work for me, so long as someone has prior experience and happy with the repairs. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
