GT3 MKII maintenance cost ?

Canari

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am considering buying a GT3 MKII clubsport.

I have some questions about the maintenance cost of the GT3 MKII compared to the 964RS.

I have two options :

Option 1 : car will be used for street and 6 track day a year.

Option 2 : car will be used for street and 12 track day a year.

Do you GT3 owner know how much more the GT3 will cost compared to the 964RS ?

Do you have any track budget description to have an idea of my future expenses :D

Tanks for your valuable inputs and have a nice "GT3" day :)

I am not planning to track mine until next year (so nothing first hand), but I have been looking into this so since nobody else has replied...

Firstly on the cost of normal maintenance, while I stand to be corrected the running cost as a road car are so far proving to be rather less than a normal 964 (parents used to have one until this year), so I cannot imagine a 964RS will be any cheaper.

However, track costs are a different matter as tyres and brakes are pricey items. Wear rates will differ depending upon how you drive on track but from what I can determine the cost on 'consumables' will average at least £500 (GBP) per day and likely a fair bit more depending upon what tyres you go with.

I would recommend trying the PCGB forums for more specific answers (http://www.porscheclubgb.com) as there are plenty of people with lots of track day experience in GT3s (on European circuits) there.

Hi Yann,

I am considering buying a GT3 MKII clubsport.

Good choice - I bought mine a few months ago :)

I have some questions about the maintenance cost of the GT3 MKII compared to the 964RS.

Do you GT3 owner know how much more the GT3 will cost compared to the 964RS ?

I sold my 964RS a while ago - but as someone else posted, a GT3 should be cheaper to run:

1) Parts are more available - on the 964RS for example, the heater control unit is now around €1,200 from Porsche! GT3 parts, being shared with the rest of the 996 *and* 986 family means they're cheaper

2) The service intervals are much greater - although personally I prefer to service mine every year, rather than on mileage.

3) Insurance should be cheaper - to repair 964RS's is getting very expensive - GT3's are cheaper to repair if damaged - so this should be reflected in the insurance.

4) You'll use the GT3 more - so it will be better value for money :) I loved my 964RS and 993RS very much - but they're becomming 'classic cars' and less useable everyday - no matter what the weather I jump in the GT3 and it's become my daily driver - so you'll get more value.

Do you have any track budget description to have an idea of my future expenses :D

This depends :-) The cost is linked to how hard you like to push it on track! I am very lucky and have a GT3Cup for track use - I can get through a set of slicks in two events and they cost around €1,000 a set. Brake pads will last, along with discs, roughly five events.

Because the car is being worked much harder than road use, plan on changing the oil and filter every two to three events.

The other cost for trackdays is insurance - in my old track car, I was hit from behind and pushed into the gravel - no major damage, but a bill of about €2,000 - because there is no third party liability on track days, you're left with the bill - so get insurance - it's worth it!

The other problem, if you're tracking the car - is upgrades :D You're going to want to go faster and harder as you track more - so budget for a suspension upgrade (Manthey c. €3,000), maybe lighter wheels / second set of wheels for track use only (€1,000), exhaust and air box replacement for more power (€2,000?) - it is like a bad addiction - the more you track, the faster you want to be :drive:

Thanks guys :))))

What set-up alignment are you considering for :

- track use ?

- track and road use mixed ?

Are you keeping the Porsche stock one ?

Because I have a Cup car for trackwork, I'm leaving my road Clubsport in factory trim - the roll bars have been set full stif (by the previous owner) and I love the handling - although you can't relax for a second :drive:

Also - with all the worries about warranty issues - I'm not doing anything that voids the warranty

Ok. Thanks.

Anyone tried manthey motors ?

They seem to have good experience in GT3...

where I can find a second set of wheel for track use only at 1.000 Euro? Everywhere I find it more expensive than 1.000.
