Oil Burning Smell

Recommended Posts

HI Guys And Gals

I have a 1998 993 Cab and I just got a new Clutch and Brakes. 29k Miles.

All of a sudden after the car sits for an hour when I get in and start it and particularly if I back up with the Top down I smell an overwhelming odor of burnt oil. Like blow-by.

I did not notice this before the new clutch but the mechanic say everything good and no leaks and the clutch works great.

Any ideas??

I don't know if this is your issue or not, but I once had an oil change done by a new mechanic (I was out of town). He either overfilled the reserve or spilled some, but I was getting white smoke for a day or two and then an oil smell for about 2 months afterwards. After that it's been fine. I just assumed this was oil cooking off the engine.

It is possible that spilt oil is burning off the exhaust, sometimes the smell can last for weeks. Take it for good long, hard drive to really get the exhaust upto temperature and see if that cures the problem. Best to check the fluid levels before hand just to be safe.
