Porsche to miss forecasted number for first year Cayenne sales?

Hmmm...

Dear 001,

Porsche Cars North America is starting to make it a little tougher for the Auto Spies sleuths: the June US sales report has stopped furnishing the "Dealer Stock" data, which gave the buyer valuable insight into the supply/demand equation.

The headlines show unit sales up 27% from last year. Of course, all the increase is from US sales for the Cayenne which are holding steady, with 1401 units delivered in June, vice 1388 in May, the first full month they were available. If the rate holds constant, that is about 17,000 units a year.

Things in the sports car department don't look so good at all. The venerable 911 continues a downward trend, with only 790 moved last month against 950 in April. Compared to last year's "year-to-date" numbers 911 sales are 20% lower.

Boxster sales are worse, with only 520 units out the doors, compared to 670 last month. The crunch really shows when you compare year to date sales, which are down over a third, 37% of last year.

Back to non-disclosure of inventory...autotrader.com shows a slight rise, from 512 new units advertised early in June to 544 today (03 and 04 model years). If you are thinking about buying a Porsche, keep a close eye on local dealer inventory through the porschedealer.com sites. This data may or may not include pre-sold units and orders not yet delivered, but the smart buyer will take a look at every bit of info out there.

Auto Spies Perspective: It is interesting...but the thing no one has picked up on yet, is that they forecasted around 25,000 units getting sold in the USA, for the first year. By these numbers, it looks like they will be coming up a little short at 17,000 or so...We're surprised to say the least. We thought they would hit their first year target and run into trouble, selling the second 25,000 units...We'll keep a close eye on this. Feddback to rumors@autospies.com .
