Convertible top problem

This is the second time I see this behaviour from my 03 996 and I am a bit worried it will get worse. The problem is that without any top activity (open or close) the top warning light comes as well as a warning saying the top is not in the closed position (or something similar). The top switch is not functioning (open or close) and if you do the mistake to lower the rear windows (which I did! <_< ) they don't come back up.

The solution so far has been to stop the car and use the key to remotely open the top. Then everything works again ... until the next time!

Any ideas what might be wrong? I suspect the sensor that detects the top position but I have no idea where it is located. Also, if this is the problem, shouldn't it block key operation as well?
