2003 Boxster S outside Temp activation

Recommended Posts

Hello folks,

I've tried searching the forum prior to asking this question, so please forgive me if my inquiry is redundant. I just picked up a 2003 Boxster S. It currently has 2 stalks. I'd love to be able to activate the OBC so that the outside temperature is displayed. I'm not at all concerned about any other functionality that the OBC can/may provide.

Could anyone point me in the right direction as to what is required to make this happen? If my research is correct, I am assuming that it will take more than just turning on the OBC (as I've done in the past with earlier model Boxsters).

I'm not averse to purchasing a new stalk or rocker switch if it isn't price prohibitive. I'd just really like to get the outside temperature working.

Thanks in advance for all of your help.

The OBC retrofit and the parts needed have been covered many times. If you are going to buy the stalk, then might as well get a 4 stalk unit and do the OBC and cruise control retrofit at the same time.

The instrument cluster for 1997-2000 is different than 2001-2004. On 1997-2000 you could have the OBC turned on and see the outside temp without the stalk or switch.

On 2001-2004 if you have the OBC turned on you will not see anything unless you do the retrofit with the stalk or switch. This is due to the fact that the design of the instrument cluster changed.

JB Brackenrig has a nice web page which explains it all: http://www.brackenrig.net/OBC_Hack.htm . I did the one switch hack which is explained in detail on Yoseif Whiteson's page: http://www.whiteson.org/boxster/mods/obc/ . It works great and the cost is minimal. The only function which you don't get when using the single switch is the ability to set the speed gong - something I would never want to do.

Toolpants,

Is the "Switch" hack covered in your DVD? I thought I saw in a thread that you have a single DVD now....yet the forum page is still showing a set of 3. I'd just like to make sure that I purchase the most recent version.

Thanks again for your help.
