Boxster Cluster

Recommended Posts

I have a question, can a boxster s cluster fit in a 2003 boxster? I understand that it does. but the dials on the boxster s says it goes up to 175 and the boxster says up to 150? would this effect in anyway?!? <_< thanks. I recently change my cluster to an S, everything seems cool, but the milage restart back to 0 and the radio screen went on protect? don't know why. please help if you can. thanks.

the new cluster model number is 986 641 213 00 and I drive a 2003 boxster non-s. just to make things clear.. THANKS for HELPING me, I need it. was freaked out :) !!!

Putting aside 2003/4 cars with MOST you can put an S cluster in the base Boxster and it will work. The cluster is smart so the analog speedometer will be your actual speed - so I have been told. We have 1 or 2 pre 2003 base Boxster owners who have the S cluster in their car because they wanted the silver trim rings and dials. The 996 cluster also has a higher reading analog display but it also displays the correct speed of a base Boxster - so I have been told.

Your part number is incomplete, but I think it is a year or 2 old. Check you part number again as it is missing some letters on the end. I also need the history of the cluster, new, used, who sold it, what year were you told it was for.

The mileage for the vehicle is stored in the instrument cluster. If you swap clusters then whatever mileage is in the replacement cluster is what you will see. For example. I pluged in a used 996 cluster I bought off ebay and it displayed 990 miles when my 1997 Boxster has over 45,000 miles. So if you put in a brand new cluster out of the box the odometer will be 0. The dealer with the PST2 will set the mileage of a new cluster forward to match the actual mileage of your car. However once a cluster has over 62 miles it is locked and the dealer cannot set the mileage forward with the PST2. However, there are private companies that can take a locked cluster and display whatever miles you want.

2003 went to the MOST fiber optic system. There is no longer a security radio code card. Instead, the code is in the radio and I think the matching code is in the instrument cluser. When the codes match then the radio works. The codes can only be set with the dealers PST2 as far as I know. This is not an issue on the pre 2003 cars as they do not have MOST.

Your radio is in the protect/theft mode because it cannot find the matching code in the instrument cluster because you replaced the cluster. What I do not know is if you were to put in a 2001-2002 cluster in a 2003 can the 2001-2002 cluster be coded for the radio since MOST did not exist in 2001-2002. That is why I am curious as to what year your new cluster is for. 2001-2002 clusters can be swaped between 2001-2002 cars with no problem. Jeff
