tiptronic (atf) fluid changes

What is the conventional wisdom about doing the 60k fluid change in a tiptronic transmission (in a 993).

I've heard, over the years, if you don't have problems, and the fluid does not smell burnt, leave it alone. I've also heard change it as prescribed.

Also, I'm not aware there is a dipstick with which to "smell" the fluid in the torque converter/transmission. If this is so, one would have to unscrew the filler plug in the unit, reach a finger in there, and then do the "smell test".
