blown engine ultimate solution?

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody,

I wonder how heavy the 996 engine is? I had P944 and it had shot engine. After I found how much it cost to rebuilt it 4cyl 16 vlv inline 4 I decided to put chev 350 in it. Got the engine from crashed Corvette, and it was only 50 pounds heavier then Porsche 4 banger. After swap it became fantastic car with P handling and weight and over 400 horses. My friend is tracking and using as daily driver 3 series BMW with corvette under the hood. No issues for two years!! How about this solution for 911? If the two computers would not work together - one to control the engine the other for ABS PSM and whatever else then scrap P computer and go back to basics. No ABS and all this electronic junk. And if the chev engine is lighter than 996 (quite possible) the car might be better then any 996 car out there. Imagine P-911 with 450 horses and better balance front to back. Any opinions?

Thanks, Andy_K.

No room.

Plus we have Porsche 911's with 450 HP direct from the factory. The new GT2 will even have 530. So why go down in power for 50 pounds less in weight :P

Not to mention the aftermarket that can turn a 911 turbo into a 500,600,700+ HP machine.

While a vette engine is a good option for those cars, its no option for a 986,987,996,997.

Best case scenario for a 911 is basically a 3.8 X51 or GT3 engine. A turbo engine would require way more work.

I say Go For It!

Folks have been stuffing LS1's into just about anything so why not a newer 911. There are conversion kits for the 944 and for the older 911s. You will be fabricating a lot of stuff to connect it. The older g50 Porsche trans bolts onto the chevy and is the standard in numerous kit cars. Don't know about the 996 trans and how different it is.

Keep us posted if you go this way.

I actually gave this considerable thought when my motor went. Given that this is my daily driver, I just couldn't afford to have her down for the length of time a custom project like this would entail, assuming that the LS would actually fit back there.

The flat six naturally aspirated comes in at around 418lbs with all accesories, 350Ci chevy with all accessories will come in close to 600lbs. Nothing like hanging more weight at the rear of a 996 or 997 not to speak of a higher profie engine! Not so sure you are correct on the Porsche 4 being 50 lighter then a 350 since the Porsche 4.7 V8 came in at 574lbs.

Kevin, not sure your weight is correct for the Al block LS.

Ahh - you ar right the LS6 fully dressed is 497lbs, still heavier then the porsche engine, not to mention that it is not a flat configuration, meaning the center of gravity on the rear will be changed.
