radiator bypass/seal cap for 968 w manual transmission.

Recommended Posts

I am looking for radiator bypass cap for my 968 manual. Brief description: Looking at the radiator from the front of the car, the radiator hose comes from the right top & is picked up on the left bottom. On the left top there is an opening in the radiator which is sealed off using a rubber cap. I cannot find the part number for this cap on PET & my local porsche mechanic told me that it 968 manual transmission specific & that in the tiptronic that outlet is being used instead of being sealed.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Well your porsche mechanic is wrong... none of the cars use that port. That port on the radiator (passenger side mid rad of the header tank) is the water inlet point when your radiator is used in the 951 turbo model car. In the later cars, the water inlet from the reservoir tank is to the port at the front of the waterpump (thereby making bleeding and filling easier as this feeds into the block behind the closed thermostat. This also indicates to me that your radiator has been changed once already as the original 968 radiator does not have this port on it, only the replacement rads as they are the 944-2.7litre/951/S2/968 universal variant.

Yes, that rubber cap IS available from the dealer and is shown not only in PET but also in the Tech Reference parts book. The reason you cannot find it is because you are looking under the 968 section, and since that radiator was not used by Porsche in the 968, you won't see it. If you look under the 1989 section when that radiator (turbo rad) was first used in the 2.7 litre NA, and then the S2 variants, you will see the part listed as 944.106.103.02.

Hope that helps,

Markus Blaszak
