1986 911 Rear Window Defogger

Recommended Posts

The upper and lower defogger elements on our '86 Targa do not activate.

The following troubleshooting steps have been taken.

1. The defogger relay has been replaced. P/N 911-615-115-00.

2. Independent continuity checks have been performed from each element to ground, (let's call the upper element #1, center #2, bottom #3), and indicate continuity to ground.

3. Voltage check on harness contact(s) number(s) 1,6, & 4 confirm 12 VDC.

4. At no time is there any voltage on relay contact # 87a (harness contact # 3).

It has been confirmed that relay #2, which applies voltage to the above contact does not ever energize.

How & when the solid state circuitry activates relay # 2 is somewhat confusing, and our local dealer/mechanics

do not know when or how relay #2 engages.

Because the attachment exceeds 1000K, you may Email me @ slyboots96@gmail.com for a circuit diagram from the Bentley manual.

I have done everything a dealer would do.

Any thoughts out there?
