Cabriolet Bose Factory Subwoofer Replacement

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Does anyone have any information with regard to the size of the driver and how to get into the subwoofer "box" in the passenger footwell in a 996 Cab? I find myself turning the bass way down because the factory sub is so buzzy and boomy. Some people have replaced the door speakers with Focal 5" subs but what do they do with the factory Bose "sub"? I'm looking to replace the factory "box" with a sealed unit and utilize a dedicated sub and amplifier from the CDR-220 preamp output. I'll upgrade the remaining speakers as I have funds but it's the bass that's killing me the most...

Thanks for any and all useful advice!

I purchased the Cab Box off of Ebay for my 99C2 (coupe) as I wanted something both factory in appearance and inexpensive. I ran a 200 watt Alpine amp to the box and noted it to be both "buzzy and boomy."

My solution was to pull the speaker out of the box and line the inside with several layers of Dynamat. Wow! What a difference that made! I was going to cut the front of the box and add an 8" woofer, but it sounds so good now that I think I'll leave it alone.

As for removal, you might have to get some diagrams for Loren, but I can tell you that the factory mounting points are basically two screws. One torq type screw bolts in at the transmission tunnel right next to the firewall. The other screw also mounts in the transmission tunnel, but up front (anteriorly) near the passenger front seat cushion. The forward screw(bolt) will be covered by carpeting. Try feeling along the front edge of the hump made by the sub...there should be a screw attaching it to the transmission tunnel under the adjacent carpet panel.

Good luck and don't give up on this little sub entirely.
