Whirring noise

Hiya, I have a 1998 2.5 Boxster, and have recently started hearing a whirring noise coming from behind the dash, on the passengers side. It is NOT the fan/blower, but does sound as if there is a leaf or twig stuck in a rotating component. The sound is coming from where the airbag and/or speaker is at the passenger side (I'm in the UK, so right hand drive). It runs as soon as the ignition is on, and runs down in about 10 seconds after it is turned off. The car is fitted with automatic climate control, I think this was called the Lux Pack. It makes no difference if the air con is on or off, and if the blower is on or off, or which vents are on or off.

I'd appreciate your thoughts !

Check the fan that draws air in for the cabin temp sensor, it located in the r/side dash vent.

Just noticed your question that is similar to the sound that I am hearing in my 2006 Boxster.

A Canadian car.

Have you come up with any solutions to locating and removing the sound producer?

I have the same problem on my 98 Boxster and for me it surely is this fan. I took it out cleaned it and the sound coming from it when not clicked into the dash is minimal. When I put it back in the sound returns and it seems like the dashboard is resonating and increasing the noise level. My question is: Would this be fixed by getting a new fan (pn: 996 653 241 00) or is there a way to stop it from resonating? If replacement is the best option, is there a cheap online store where I can find it?

Resonance is caused by a worn//out of balance fan, replacement is the best solution. "Porsche parts at dealers cost" button on top of the page can help you out.
