Thinking about upgrading Nav with Pioneer

Recommended Posts

I am thinking about upgrading the navigation unit in my 04 TT to the Pioneer Avic-Z1. I think the current OEM is pretty awful. I had a Pioneer unit in my Denali that I had prior to this one and I really miss the touch screen, vicinity search and POI where you can type in the Name vs scroll through every restuarant etc. Plus I can't get SAT radio with out using a exterior module.

I did't know if I would loose the display in the cluster, I like the radio/cd ID and music titles scrolling across the screen. Has anyone performed a install and was able to keep that function?

Thanks

I think you'll have more problems with this installation than just the display. The Pioneer AVIC uses old fashioned, copper wires to connect the speakers. The Cayenne uses the fiber optic MOST system. As a result, you'll have to replace everything, including the wiring. It's not a small task. I'm not sure about your center display, but I'd be very, very surprised if it worked.

Good luck.

I did exactly the same thing, by myself. You do need an adapter to be able to use the speakers/amplifier throught the MOST system. For that, I used an adapter from NAV-TV. It just came out a couple of month ago and while the initial one had some static, now after a software upgrade (through USB) it works perfectly. I also added a backup camera as well. 2 problems: I placed the GPS antenna in the same place as the orignial - under the roof spoiler. Going down the side to the front my cable was about 2 feet too short. I found it alomost impossible to find a short extension cable, so I let that one dead and installed another one under the dashboard, behind the cluster. Other solution, go under the roof. The second problem is that the NAV TV unit does not support the the use of the steering wheels buttons using a Pioneer unit. There are 2 PAC adapter that you need to make that one work - that is what I am installing right now.

If you are doing it yourself, I highly recommend the help of the Cayenne service/repair manual.
