This weekend's project is to figure out why the Targa top has slowed down in the close operation. I noticed the driver's side rear track doesn't have a track curtain in place. I think it did once, but honestly don't know for sure. I suspect a piece of the fabric is stuck in there somewhere and wish I could open the hatch with the targa top open. May have to bribe a kid to climb back there ...

I have a very similar problem. Bought my 996 Targa in October.

My curtain was stuck in the retracted position (recoiled?) in the rear of the car. I thought "i'll see if I can fix that". I made it worse by un-sticking it. I need to fix mine too, which might simply mean removing the curtain completely.

Please advise if you succeed in taking the back end apart, or at least what you learn from the process. It seemed to me that the only way to get at the motor was to remove all the other gubbins from the back of the car (hatch motor, wiper motor, etc) first. That could be a three weekend project for a guy like me.

Good luck!

I didn't find the driver side rear Targa top curtain. I am starting to think it disappeared a long time ago due to some grease on a trim piece.

I did manage to get some silicone grease in the assembly on both sides. On the driver's side, I worked where the curtain was missing. On the passenger side, I worked in the gap between the two curtains. It is currently opening and closing nicely.

My car dealing buddy says to remove the curtain by "unhooking it". I don't know if that helps your situation.
