3.6L Rebuilt - Metallic Noise/Valve clearance ? - What did I missed ?

Recommended Posts

Hi.

I fired the engine today, after rebuilding it.

Distribution chain was broken, damaging the IMS sprocket.

I changed the IMS, the chains, the tensioner (which, I think, caused it all), chain guides, valves and exhaust valve tappets.

I reused the intake tappets as there was no visible damage. (big mistake ?)

As there is a metallic noise, like an excessive valve clearance, I probably missed something which was actually damaged when the valves touched the pistons and were bent.

This M96.03 engine has VariocamPlus. Intake tappets are sophisticated parts. I suspect these as I reused them...and it's not easy to understand how it works, and how to check it.

Before opening it... again, I would appreciate any advice.

Have you seen those tappets damaged after valve/piston contact? It makes sense.

Any other idea ?

Thanks

Marc
