997.1 Ignition Coil Pack Replacement-Premature?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am new to this forum and cannot find an answer to my problem. I have a 2006 997.1 C2S and at 50,000 miles my coil pack on #1 cylinder packed it in. Car is 10 weeks past the 6 year Porsche Approved Warranty. I was advised to replace all 6. Is this a premature failure? Thanks in Advance. Uwon

A coil pack can go at any time, but it is probably not that common unless they have been exposed to harsh environments.

Actually anything electronic or mechanical can and will go bad at some point, of course not just from normal use but also from mfg. defects. I'm not sure what the MTBF is on coil packs, but I'm sure there are some that have lasted 100 miles and others 250,000 miles.

Personally if the other coil packs look OK are not cracked and all ohm out OK (pass proper electrical resistance), I would just replace the one bad one. Then maybe some years down the road replace the rest.

This is very common.

My car developed a miss and upon inspection , 2 of the coil packs were cracked. This was at 40k km.

Do yourself a favour and replace all the coil packs and do the sparkplugs at the same time. If you do it yourself , $300. A bit of a PITA but much cheaper than paying someone else.

Thanks Guys for your input.

Unfortunately I was 750 miles away from home when it happened without my tools so I had to use the closest Porsche dealership. Changed all six. Bloody expensive but at least I could enjoy the drive home.

Cheers,

Uwon

C2S 997.1 2006, 25K miles. While changing the spark plugs, found out that all 3 left bank coils have cracked. I do not have a working multimeter to check the resistance. Right bank coils are perfect with no signs of crack. May be the previous owner changed the right side coils.
