Low RPM/Gear Engagement Squeak Noise

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I tried this question over at another boxster forum, but I don't think I was able to get any help. Maybe because the problem is too vague :)

Recently when coming to a stop and engaging the clutch with little to no gas I hear a squeaking noise until I accelerate.

Any other suggestions, or ideas? It's like a weird squeaking noise until I give it a little gas or until I go. Happens on second gear to when rolling at a low RPM engagement. It also happens sometimes coming to a stop in neutral.

It also doesn't happen when driving from a cold engine. It happens mostly when the engine is warmed up a few minutes later. It doesn't happen for like 10-20 minutes of driving. But it squeaks on occasion when I'm on neutral slowing down or at a stop. I'm not in gear or anything. I rev it to make it temporary stop and sometimes it stops. Other times it continues.

But when I engage really low I can hear it squeaking until the clutch fully grabs. But it shouldn't be relative to the clutch if it happens on idle...

The belt looks fine. Maybe I should replace it anyways?

Thank you for your patience and advice. It's a bit annoying to drive in stop and go Atlanta traffic constantly hearing that rhythmic eee-eee-eee noise.

Also noted is that I can replicate the noise again by putting my e brake on, and trying to engage the first gear at low rpm

Anyways, I would appreciate it if anyone else has any advice concerning this issue.

If it wernt for the fact that it squeeks in neutral I would have said it was the clutch release bearing, maybe its just touching the clutch enough to spin it an give a squeek. Can you get it up in the air and have a listen underneath. How many miles on the clutch?

I agree w Timbo, other than something in the clutch away, maybe check the belt, tensioners, and maybe a worn water pump...the WP impeller is plastic. When my shaft failed it had excess play that caused the squeak (plastic fan against engine case. But you would also likely have a small water leak as well...

Clutch is probably original, I have to check that. It grabs fine, and going 30-40 miles I hit the 5th gear and no slip or anything.

Since the problem doesn't happen immediately until after I run the engine for a bit, it's hard for me to take the engine cover off and reenact it, because it usually disappears within ten minutes. I'll try it again repeatedly until I'm able to trace the sound.

Hm i checked the belt, it wasn't cracked or anything. I was thinking worn water pump, like on the way out, but initially I didn't see anything out of the weep hole. I can check again....

I really appreciate everyone's help. If I can recreate it sometime soon I'll upload a youtube video or something.

It's such a weird problem, since it happens on neutral/idle as well. I hope it is a simple thing. This car is getting a bit expensive to maintain :)

Another thing I've noticed is that when I turn off the car, I assume everything is slowing to a half and I can hear a slight low squeak consistent with the same sound as it is running.

I'm convinced it has to do with the belts or pulley system but I can't check since it only occurs when driving or when the car is warm and hasn't been idling a bit.

I guess I could drive around for a bit and try to quickly dissemble the engine cover to recreate the sound. [emoji13]

Any other suggestions?

I had a similar chirp/squeak that I heard only when engaging the clutch but it was very subtle - and totally gone after a clutch and flywheel replacement.

Also check the torque on your spark plugs - you can get a chirp from a loose plug

First time post for me.. thanks in advance for any help.

I'm having the same issue: squeaking noise at low rpm when rolling to a stop. Its a 2006 Cayman S with 60,000 kms. Any inputs are much appreciated.

Thanks!
